10-year-old surfing triplets travel from US to Sydney

They may be small in stature, but the Kryger triplets have a huge future ahead of them.

Connor, Isabelle and Chase, from the US state of Texas, made the 13,000 km trek to Sydney last week to compete in the Hurley Blast Off surfing festival.

The 10-year-olds took to the waves in North Avalon for the annual under-14 "grom" event, organised by former world surfing champion Barton Lynch.

They were joined by more than 360 other surfers from across Australia, ranging in age from 3 to 14, making it the biggest kids' surfing festival in the country.

It's not the first time the trio have visited Australia, competing in the same festival two years ago, when they were 8.

While they weren't able to make it last year, this year they arrived with time to spare, flying into Sydney several days early and taking to the waves that afternoon.

The preparation paid off for Isabelle, who came first in the Girls 10-and-under finals, while her brothers were knocked out in the heats.

On Thursday, the final day of the event, mother nature turned on perfect surfing conditions, with 4-foot waves and an offshore wind.

Mr Lynch said his festival has a unique format where the focus is on supporting the kids whether they win or lose.

"The first few rounds they surf, they receive coaching feedback from the judges to help them progress their surfing and learn new skills in a really fun and supportive environment," Mr Lynch said.

"Win, lose or draw, competing or not, everyone's having a great time. It's just a really great family event."

Matt Kryger, the triplets' father, agreed, saying it was worth making the trek to Sydney to take part.

"People ask 'why come out all the way from the States?' But we don't need much of an excuse, it's beautiful here," Mr Kryger, himself an avid surfer, told News Corp.

"It's wonderful to be part of this event and it's by far the best grom event in the world."
