Cambrai (French pronunciation: [kɑ̃bʁɛ]; Picard: Kimbré; Dutch: Kamerijk; German: Kamerich; old spelling Cambray) is a commune in the Nord department and in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France on the Scheldt river, which is known locally as the Escaut river.
A sub-prefecture of the department, Cambrai is a town which had 32,518 inhabitants in the Census of 2009. It is in the heart of the urban unit of Cambrai which, with 47,138 inhabitants, ranks as 7th largest of the department. Its urban area, a more extensive range, included 65,986 inhabitants in 2009. With Lille and the towns of the former Nord-Pas de Calais Mining Basin, it is also part of the Metropolitan area of Lille which has more than 3.8 million inhabitants.
Towards the end of the Roman Empire, Cambrai replaced Bavay as the "capital" of the land of the Nervii. At the beginning of the Merovingian era, Cambrai became the seat of an immense archdiocese covering all the right bank of the Scheldt and the centre of a small ecclesiastical principality, roughly coinciding with the shire of Brabant, including the central part of the Low Countries. The bishopric had some limited secular power and depended on the Holy Roman Empire until annexation to France in 1678. Fénelon, nicknamed the "Swan of Cambrai", was the most renowned of the archbishops.

At Cambrai in November 1917, a tank force of over three hundred tanks punched a hole four miles deep into the German lines in the space of a single morning, But the Germans counter-attacked and the result of the battle was a virtual draw, with the front lines shifting slightly. However the battle of Cambrai marked a major turning point in the course of the war - as the era of trench warfare was coming to an end and technology was beginning to reign supreme on the battlefields of Europe.
I don't usually upload anything serious on this channel, but I decided to do something completely out of character and publish my documentary on the use of tanks at the Battle of Cambrai. In reality, this movie made it to the highest level (Nationals) of National History Day, and I have chosen to share it with the world. Copyright infringement is not my intention, so DO NOT SUE ME. Enjoy my documentary. Subscribe.

The most common theory of the origin of Brussels' name is that it derives from the Old Dutch Broekzele or Broeksel, meaning marsh (broek) and home (zele / sel) or "home in the marsh". The origin of the settlement that was to become Brussels lies in Saint Gaugericus' construction of a chapel on an island in the river Senne around 580. Saint Vindicianus, the bishop of Cambrai made the first recorded reference to the place "Brosella" in 695 when it was still a hamlet. The official founding of Brussels is usually situated around 979, when Duke Charles of Lower Lotharingia transferred the relics of Saint Gudula from Moorsel to the Saint Gaugericus chapel. Charles would construct the first permanent fortification in the city, doing so on that same island. (wikipedia)

Out trip to Cambrai with Paris Volley sorry for not so good camera work! Firs video with GoPro Audio Rights belong to their original owners!
This was the first trip abroad for 2012. The weather was not all that great, but hey, it is winter! Usual run to Dover, Kent, crossing by P&O; ferry to Calais, then to Cambrai in France. Cambrai gives the name to the first ever 'proper' tank battle in WW1, but has history stretching way back beyond that. I have left the 'street noise' in, saves bother with 'copywrite issues', as well as giving some flavour of this bustling town. Well worth visiting this place, too much to see in one day, plenty of excellent restaurants.

I want more people to visit France. This video is aimed at some American You Tube friends, to get them to stop fixing gutters and rat rods & stuff, and come to Europe. First, a chair for sale in a 'designer shop' in Cambrai, just think, only $4,000.00 for a chair to play a psaltery in! Then a designer dog basket, fake snakeskin, just right for a faithful old hound. Then the real tempter: just off the main road to Calais, a scrap yard, kept secret by trees and fences, sadly, the bit with all thr trucks and buses was too near the motorway for me to film it but about 4 acres of rad rod materiel, all stacked and rusty!

The Château de Vincennes is a massive 14th and 17th century French royal castle in the town of Vincennes, to the east of Paris. Like other more famous châteaux it had its origins in a hunting lodge, constructed for Louis VII about 1150 in the forest of Vincennes. In the 13th century, Philip Augustus and Louis IX erected a more substantial manor: Louis IX is reputed to have departed from Vincennes on the crusade from which he did not return. Vincennes was more than the grim fortress: Philippe III (in 1274) and Philippe IV (in 1284) were each married there and three 14th-century kings died at Vincennes: Louis X (1316), Philippe V (1322) and Charles IV (1328). To strengthen the site the castle was greatly enlarged replacing the earlier site in the later 14th century. A donjon tower, 52 meter...
I'm gonna dangle my feet over the wire
Despite your despair, I'm going over to the other side
There's a break in the clouds where the crimson connects
Anticipate my demise, the world's different from up here
Am I caught in the background, a part of the scene?
Misery in the come down, when I come down from here.
Are we tangled in each other, or placed in between?
Like a stone, or a stones throw away from falling
Am I just scant in the landscape,
Or a range close to you?
I think I fell into a strange play with wandering limbs
And eager hands
Now the sun's gone today, I can lest towards space
Now transcend into blues, fade out from the ground breaks
I feel so beautiful, cut me off from the crowd
I got the birds eye view, now we're all just thoughts in a sky
Am I caught in the background, or part of the scene?
Misery in the calm-down, when I come down from here.
Are we tangled in each other, or placed in between?
Like a stone, or a stones throw away from far
Am I just a sketch in the landscape
Or arranged close to you?
I think I fell, I think I fell into a strange play with wandering limbs
