Guam (i/ˈɡwɑːm/ or /ˈɡwɒm/; Chamorro: Guåhån; formally the Territory of Guam) is an unincorporated and organized territory of the United States. Located in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, Guam is one of five American territories with an established civilian government. The capital city is Hagåtña, and the most populous city is Dededo. In 2015, 161,785 people were residing on Guam. Guamanians are American citizens by birth. Guam has an area of 544 km2 (210 sq mi) and a density of 297/km² (770/sq mi). It is the largest and southernmost of the Mariana Islands, and the largest island in Micronesia. Among its municipalities, Mongmong-Toto-Maite has the highest density at 1,425/km² (3,691/sq mi) and Inarajan has its lowest density at 46/km² (119/sq mi). The highest point is Mount Lamlam at 406 meters (1,332 ft) above sea-level.
The Chamorros, Guam's indigenous people, settled the island approximately 4,000 years ago. Portuguese-explorer Ferdinand Magellan discovered the island on March 6, 1521. Guam was colonized in 1668 with settlers, like Diego Luis de San Vitores, a Catholic missionary. Between the 1500s and the 1700s, Guam was an important stopover for the Spanish Manila Galleons. During the Spanish–American War, the United States captured Guam on June 21, 1898. Under the Treaty of Paris, Spain ceded Guam to the United States on December 10, 1898. Guam is amongst the seventeen Non-Self-Governing Territories of the United Nations.

Living on Guam, our island people know all too well about surviving a typhoon. "We've gone through typhoons such as this and we're resilient in the part as we're affected as well we're trying to recover at the same time," said Guam Homeland Security Advisor Brigadier General Johnny Lizama.

The Office of Public Accountability has warned that continued overspending by the government will result in increased tax liability, which means residents continually getting their refunds late. But the Calvo Administration believes it has a solution to put an end to that practice.

US kills snakes in Guam by air dropping mice. The United States government has a plan to get rid of the invasive brown tree snake from the island of Guam. Helicopters will be deployed to drop mini-parachutes attached to dead mice stuffed with acetaminophen or Tylenol, which is poisonous to the snakes. Unlike most snakes, the brown tree snake will eat prey that is already dead, and the government hopes that the parachutes will get caught in trees, to minimize their exposure to other animals besides the brown tree snake. Scientists think that the first brown tree snake came to Guam about 60 years ago towards the end of World War II, and since then they have been a menace causing power outages, attacking people, and wiping out native birds. According to Cheryl Calaustro from Guam's...

We must build up our agricultural capacity and our agricultural community. When we have greater food security, we can prosper. Besides, our people deserve good healthy and affordable food. Reducing the 6,000 miles of supply chain links will create jobs on island. We import 98-99 percent of our foodstuffs; we have to improve this for ourselves. Post World War II, we did not import anything, and we were able to feed thousands of our people, soldiers and workers. We did it then, we can change! Recently, a storm hit Hawai’i and ships were delayed coming to Guam. Grocery shelves were empty of produce. Imagine if there was an emergency at our port. With less than two weeks’ worth of food to last us, we will run out. Agriculture has to be taken seriously as the 3rd leg of our economy.

Service-wise, it is the same as United Economy, though United Economy Plus passengers are served first. Get a Taste for Chamorro Cuisine The Chamorro Village Wednesday Night Market is a beautiful mixture of food (try the barbecue or the tilapia with red rice), culture and artisanship. You can find fresh produce, sample dishes prepared by local restaurants and shop for artisan crafts and gifts, all while also enjoying live music and dance performances. It was like a party with so many friends I didn’t know I had. If you prefer a sit-down dining experience, make your way to Meskla Chamoru Fusion Bistro. “Meskla” means “mix or blend,” in Chamorro, and Chef Peter Duenas’ plates truly celebrate the blend of cultures on Guam, offering a unique fusion of Guam’s local cuisine that keeps diners coming back again and again. I certainly plan to return. Enjoy a Night Out on the Town Whether you pref...

Exploring Guam's Chamorro History and Culture The tropical island of Guam, located in the Western Pacific Ocean, is "where America's day begins" because of its proximity to the International Date Line, making it the first place in the U.S. to start the day. On my trip to Guam, I appreciated the early start because it gave me plenty of time to discover the island's rich history and culture. Guam's native inhabitants are the Chamorro people, and the influence of their traditions and customs can be found in every aspect of the island's history, cuisine and legends. Chamorro Life, Then and Now I started my cultural exploration at Gef Pa'go Chamorro Cultural Village, a living museum of traditional thatched huts overlooking Inarajan Bay. Here, visitors can experience life as Guam's native Ch...
