Salisbury Plain, the best trails in England? Off Road by Honda CRF 250L - Part 1: It's been ages since I took my trusty Honda CRF 250L off-road. Now when I say off-road I mean light gravel track because I'm rubbish in the dirt. Watching a live-fire training exercise on England's Salisbury Plain Training Area in April 2021.
Two RAF Typhoons (callsign 'Vandel') gave close air support to troops fighting an opposing force.
Two Army Air Corps Apaches (callsign 'Machette') used their 20mm cannon guns.
Opposing forces used tracked vehicles including Challenger 2 tanks and Warriors.

The full force of British Army firepower has been brought to bear on Salisbury Plain.
Invited guests have been treated to a ground shaking demonstration of what the UK can bring to a fight.
The rather drearily named Land Combat Power Visit is actually a full on live firing exercise, staged for the benefit of politicians, civil servants and other defence decision makers, as well as visiting diplomats.
It is a truly amazing spectacle. From Challenger Two tanks firing on the move, mortars and 155 rounds raining down on the Plain to dismounted infantry storming an objective, it really does have it all.
There's even live firing of a Javelin missile, a LAWS anti tank rocket and a brief cameo by the backbone of UK air power, in the shape of an RAF Tornado GR4.
While there's no question that the people that have come to see this demonstration will be wowed by the sheer power on display, there is a serious side too.
It is a way of 3rd UK Division showing that, as the army's reaction force it is ready for whatever it may be called upon to do.
The international nature of the guests makes the point too that Britain, through the troops on display here, stands ready to intervene far from UK shores.
All those present will know that the world is an increasingly difficult place, and that for all the cuts that the British forces have seen, they are still to be reckoned with.

Forces News has been given access to some of the new British Army facilities on Salisbury Plain. As the Army Basing Programme comes to a conclusion after seven years, our cameras have been let inside garrisons across the Wiltshire training area to find out how thousands of troops and their families returning from Germany have settled in.
The last decade has seen a huge shift in where Army units are stationed, with new 'Super Garrisons' created to house the additional personnel. Among the sites transformed are Tidworth, Larkhill and Bulford.

Collected by Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1904, the traditional song Salisbury Plain is set on the vast spacious landscape of the same name in England's South West. A defining feature of the plain is Old Sarum, the remains of an ancient city atop the steep slopes of an Iron Age hillfort, looking across to modern Salisbury. This was once a bustling metropolis and was the place where William the Conqueror secured the loyalty of England's barons and landowners.

There are a load of lookout towers near my home and I thought it would be good to check them out with the drone. What I found was a chopped up aircraft (737) and some training areas which include a hardened bunker. Enjoy. The Salisbury Plain is a major training area used by the UK Army and other forces.

Extra info... those things that look like seats in the windows of the lookout towers are not seats, they are sighting devices with a compass rose and a site that you can line up with your target in order to read off the angle.

Salisbury Plain is a chalk plateau in central southern England covering 300 square miles (780 km2). It is part of a system of chalk downlands throughout eastern and southern England formed by the rocks of the Chalk Group and largely lies within the county of Wiltshire, with a little in Hampshire. The plain is famous for its rich archaeology, including Stonehenge, one of England's best known landmarks. Largely as a result of the establishment of the Defence Training Estate Salisbury Plain (DTE SP), the plain is sparsely populated and is the largest remaining area of calcareous grassland in north-west Europe. Additionally the plain has arable land, and a few small areas of beech trees and coniferous woodland. Its highest point is Easton Hill.
Physical geography
The boundaries of Salisbury Plain have never been truly defined, and there is some difference of opinion as to its exact area. The river valleys surrounding it, and other downs and plains beyond them loosely define its boundaries. To the north the scarp of the downs overlooks the Vale of Pewsey, and to the north west the Bristol Avon. The River Wylye runs along the south west, and the Bourne runs to the east. The Hampshire Avon runs through the eastern half of the plain and to the south the plain peters out as the river valleys close together before meeting at Salisbury. From here the Avon continues south to the English Channel at Christchurch. The Hampshire Downs and the Berkshire Downs are chalk downland to the east and north of Salisbury Plain, and the Dorset Downs and Cranborne Chase are to the south west. In the west and north west the geology is mainly of the clays and limestones of the Blackmore Vale, Avon Vale and Vale of Wardour.

Salisbury (various pronunciations, but locally /ˈsɔːzbri/, SAWZ-bree) is a cathedral city in Wiltshire, England, and the only city within the county. It is the third-largest settlement in the county, after Swindon and Chippenham, with a population of 41,682.
The city is located in the southeast of Wiltshire, near the edge of Salisbury Plain. Its cathedral was formerly located to the north at Old Sarum; following its relocation, a settlement grew up around it, drawing residents from Old Sarum and Wilton. The new town received its city charter in 1227 under the name New Sarum, which continued to be its official name until 2009, when the Salisbury City Council was established. It sits at the confluence of five rivers: the Nadder, Ebble, Wylye, and Bourne are tributary to the Hampshire Avon, which flows to the south coast and into the sea at Christchurch in Dorset. Salisbury railway station serves the city and is a regional interchange, marking the crossing point between the West of England Main Line and the Wessex Main Line.

Salisbury, Maryland
Salisbury /ˈsɔːlzbəri/ is a city in southeastern Maryland, United States. It is the county seat of Wicomico County and the largest city in the state's Eastern Shore region. The population was 30,343 at the 2010 census. Salisbury is the principal city of the Salisbury, Maryland-Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is the commercial hub of the Delmarva Peninsula and calls itself "the Crossroads of Delmarva".
Salisbury is located near several major cities: Baltimore 106 miles (171 km); Washington, D.C. 119 miles (192 km), Philadelphia 128 miles (206 km), and Wilmington 96 miles (154 km).
History
Salisbury's location at the head of Wicomico River was a major factor in growth. At first it was a small colonial outpost set up by Lord Baltimore. In 1732, Salisbury became an official port, growing to be second only to Baltimore as the most active seaport in Maryland.
The Gillis-Grier House, Honeysuckle Lodge, Sen. William P. Jackson House, Pemberton Hall, Perry-Cooper House, Poplar Hill Mansion, Union Station, and F. Leonard Wailes Law Office are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Salisbury Plain, the best trails in England? Off Road by Honda CRF 250L - Part 1: It's been ages since I took my trusty Honda CRF 250L off-road. Now when I say off-road I mean light gravel track because I'm rubbish in the dirt. In this video I took my bike up to Salisbury Plain for the day to check out the miles of trail on offer there, great time had as you will see - stay tuned for part 2 (complete with the promised "fashion segment") soon!

The full force of British Army firepower has been brought to bear on Salisbury Plain.
Invited guests have been treated to a ground shaking demonstration of what the UK can bring to a fight.
The rather drearily named Land Combat Power Visit is actually a full on live firing exercise, staged for the benefit of politicians, civil servants and other defence decision makers, as well as visiting diplomats.
It is a truly amazing spectacle. From Challenger Two tanks firing on the move, mortars and 155 rounds raining down on the Plain to dismounted infantry storming an objective, it really does have it all.
There's even live firing of a Javelin missile, a LAWS anti tank rocket and a brief cameo by the backbone of UK air power, in the shape of an RAF Tornado GR4.
While there's no question that the people that have come to see this demonstration will be wowed by the sheer power on display, there is a serious side too.
It is a way of 3rd UK Division showing that, as the army's reaction force it is ready for whatever it may be called upon to do.
The international nature of the guests makes the point too that Britain, through the troops on display here, stands ready to intervene far from UK shores.
All those present will know that the world is an increasingly difficult place, and that for all the cuts that the British forces have seen, they are still to be reckoned with.

Forces News has been given access to some of the new British Army facilities on Salisbury Plain. As the Army Basing Programme comes to a conclusion after seven years, our cameras have been let inside garrisons across the Wiltshire training area to find out how thousands of troops and their families returning from Germany have settled in.
The last decade has seen a huge shift in where Army units are stationed, with new 'Super Garrisons' created to house the additional personnel. Among the sites transformed are Tidworth, Larkhill and Bulford.

Collected by Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1904, the traditional song Salisbury Plain is set on the vast spacious landscape of the same name in England's South West. A defining feature of the plain is Old Sarum, the remains of an ancient city atop the steep slopes of an Iron Age hillfort, looking across to modern Salisbury. This was once a bustling metropolis and was the place where William the Conqueror secured the loyalty of England's barons and landowners.

There are a load of lookout towers near my home and I thought it would be good to check them out with the drone. What I found was a chopped up aircraft (737) and some training areas which include a hardened bunker. Enjoy. The Salisbury Plain is a major training area used by the UK Army and other forces.

Extra info... those things that look like seats in the windows of the lookout towers are not seats, they are sighting devices with a compass rose and a site that you can line up with your target in order to read off the angle.

Salisbury in Wiltshire / England (UK) is a town that's know mostly for the iconic prehistoric stone circle at Stonehenge. Salisbury itself is also nice to visit before or after the Stonehedge visit. We start our tour (October 2019) at the Poultry Cross, which is a historic market cross in the centre of Salisbury. We walk straight into Butcher row / Fish row and further to the market place. Along the streets are many of the old houses of Salisbury. Salisbury Steak - TV Dinner Style - Food Wishes
Back when I was a kid, and our parents didn’t have time to make a meal, we’d get to enjoy something called a TV dinner. They weren’t that good, but we didn’t care, since we got to set up our specially designed trays, and eat in front of the screen. One of the most popular TV dinner entrees of that era was the Salisbury steak, and this is my not-too-modern take on that classic dish. Enjoy! Salisbury in Wiltshire / England (UK) is a town that's know mostly for the iconic prehistoric stone circle at Stonehenge. Salisbury itself is also nice to visit before or after the Stonehedge visit.
We start our tour (October 2019) at the Poultry Cross, which is a historic market cross in the centre of Salisbury. We walk straight into Butcher row / Fish row and further to the market place. Along the streets are many of the old houses of Salisbury.
When we walk West to the River Avon at the Maltings we also see some restaurants as well as the St Thomas & St Edmund's Church, nearly where we started.
We head now South of the centre towards the city’s ornate 13th-century cathedral. The Salisbury cathedral has a 123m spire. An original copy of the Magna Carta - a key document from 1215 A.D. - is also on display there.
Once again we walk back towards the River Avon, which leads us to the city centre again. We walks past the Poultry Cross again and are on our way to the train station, where we end this walk.

The full force of British Army firepower has been brought to bear on Salisbury Plain.
Invited guests have been treated to a ground shaking demonstration of what the UK can bring to a fight.
The rather drearily named Land Combat Power Visit is actually a full on live firing exercise, staged for the benefit of politicians, civil servants and other defence decision makers, as well as visiting diplomats.
It is a truly amazing spectacle. From Challenger Two tanks firing on the move, mortars and 155 rounds raining down on the Plain to dismounted infantry storming an objective, it really does have it all.
There's even live firing of a Javelin missile, a LAWS anti tank rocket and a brief cameo by the backbone of UK air power, in the shape of an RAF Tornado GR4.
While there's no question that the people that have come to see this demonstration will be wowed by the sheer power on display, there is a serious side too.
It is a way of 3rd UK Division showing that, as the army's reaction force it is ready for whatever it may be called upon to do.
The international nature of the guests makes the point too that Britain, through the troops on display here, stands ready to intervene far from UK shores.
All those present will know that the world is an increasingly difficult place, and that for all the cuts that the British forces have seen, they are still to be reckoned with.

Forces News has been given access to some of the new British Army facilities on Salisbury Plain. As the Army Basing Programme comes to a conclusion after seven years, our cameras have been let inside garrisons across the Wiltshire training area to find out how thousands of troops and their families returning from Germany have settled in.
The last decade has seen a huge shift in where Army units are stationed, with new 'Super Garrisons' created to house the additional personnel. Among the sites transformed are Tidworth, Larkhill and Bulford.

In this new series in collaboration with The Nest Collective, we explore the stories behind traditional English folk songs that have connections to historic places.
Collected by Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1904, the traditional song Salisbury Plain is set on the vast spacious landscape of the same name in England's South West. A defining feature of the plain is Old Sarum, the remains of an ancient city atop the steep slopes of an Iron Age hillfort, looking across to modern Salisbury. This was once a bustling metropolis and was the place where William the Conqueror secured the loyalty of England's barons and landowners.

There are a load of lookout towers near my home and I thought it would be good to check them out with the drone. What I found was a chopped up aircraft (737) and some training areas which include a hardened bunker. Enjoy. The Salisbury Plain is a major training area used by the UK Army and other forces.

Extra info... those things that look like seats in the windows of the lookout towers are not seats, they are sighting devices with a compass rose and a site that you can line up with your target in order to read off the angle.

Salisbury Plain
Coordinates: 51°09′18″N 1°48′32″W / 51.155°N 1.809°W / 51.155; -1.809
Salisbury Plain is a chalk plateau in central southern England covering 300 square miles (780 km2). It is part of a system of chalk downlands throughout eastern and southern England formed by the rocks of the Chalk Group and largely lies within the county of Wiltshire, with a little in Hampshire. The plain is famous for its rich archaeology, including Stonehenge, one of England's best known landmarks. Largely as a result of the establishment of the Defence Training Estate Salisbury Plain (DTE SP), the plain is sparsely populated and is the largest remaining area of calcareous grassland in north-west Europe. Additionally the plain has arable land, and a few small areas of beech trees and coniferous woodland. Its highest point is Easton Hill.
Physical geography
The boundaries of Salisbury Plain have never been truly defined, and there is some difference of opinion as to its exact area. The river valleys surrounding it, and other downs and plains beyond them loosely define its boundaries. To the north the scarp of the downs overlooks the Vale of Pewsey, and to the north west the Bristol Avon. The River Wylye runs along the south west, and the Bourne runs to the east. The Hampshire Avon runs through the eastern half of the plain and to the south the plain peters out as the river valleys close together before meeting at Salisbury. From here the Avon continues south to the English Channel at Christchurch. The Hampshire Downs and the Berkshire Downs are chalk downland to the east and north of Salisbury Plain, and the Dorset Downs and Cranborne Chase are to the south west. In the west and north west the geology is mainly of the clays and limestones of the Blackmore Vale, Avon Vale and Vale of Wardour.

Salisbury in Wiltshire / England (UK) is a town that's know mostly for the iconic prehistoric stone circle at Stonehenge. Salisbury itself is also nice to visit before or after the Stonehedge visit.
We start our tour (October 2019) at the Poultry Cross, which is a historic market cross in the centre of Salisbury. We walk straight into Butcher row / Fish row and further to the market place. Along the streets are many of the old houses of Salisbury.
When we walk West to the River Avon at the Maltings we also see some restaurants as well as the St Thomas & St Edmund's Church, nearly where we started.
We head now South of the centre towards the city’s ornate 13th-century cathedral. The Salisbury cathedral has a 123m spire. An original copy of the Magna Carta - a key document from 1215 A.D. - is also on display there.
Once again we walk back towards the River Avon, which leads us to the city centre again. We walks past the Poultry Cross again and are on our way to the train station, where we end this walk.

Having left Genesis the previous summer, Peter’s first solo album arrived in February 1977. He was 26. With legendary producer Bob Ezrin taking charge the intention was to make something more direct and tougher than what had come before. Solsbury Hill was the first single to be taken from the album, though the video you see here was created much later "just messing around at Real World with a painter friend of mine Graham Dean." says Peter.
