Circus (building)

The Roman circus (from Latin, "circle") was a large open-air venue used for public events in the ancient Roman Empire. The circuses were similar to the ancient Greek hippodromes, although circuses served varying purposes and differed in design and construction. Along with theatres and amphitheatres, Circuses were one of the main entertainment sites of the time. Circuses were venues for chariot races, horse races, and performances that commemorated important events of the empire were performed there. For events that involved re-enactments of naval battles, the circus was flooded with water.

According to Edward Gibbon, in Chapter XXXI of his work The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, the Roman people, at the start of the 5th century:

Architectural design

The performance space of the Roman circus was normally, despite its name, an oblong rectangle of two linear sections of race track, separated by a median strip running along the length of about two thirds the track, joined at one end with a semicircular section and at the other end with an undivided section of track closed (in most cases) by a distinctive starting gate known as the carceres, thereby creating a circuit for the races. The Circus of Maxentius epitomises the design.

Circus (2000 film)

Circus is a 2000 British crime thriller movie directed by Rob Walker and written by David Logan. The movie stars John Hannah, Famke Janssen, Peter Stormare, Brian Conley, and Eddie Izzard. It was released in the UK on 5 May 2000 and had its USA (limited) release on September 15, 2000.

Plot

Leo (John Hannah) and Lily (Famke Janssen) are a couple and a couple of con artists. Lily wants to get out of the racket and settle down in a nice place somewhere far away. Leo agrees saying that within a week they should have enough to leave for good.

Leo's cousin Bruno (Brian Conley) is having a problem with his casino losing money. He wants Leo to run it. But in reality, he hates Leo and wants to get rid of him.

Further complicating Leo's life is Julius (Peter Stormare) who has asked Leo to kill his wife, Gloria. Only when it comes time to be paid, Julius, who has Leo committing the murder on tape, confesses he doesn't have a wife; he paid a woman to pretend to be his wife. Julius wants 500,000 in pounds, otherwise he will release the tape to the authorities.

Circus (2009 film)

Circus is a 2009 Kannada film directed and produced by Dayal Padmanabhan who previously acted with Ganesh in Gaalipata. Music was composed by Emil. The film stars Ganesh and Archana Gupta in the lead roles, Archana Gupta who had earlier done leading role in Telugu film Andamaina Manasulo. The film released statewide on 15 January 2009.

Plot

Circus has a tag line along with its sub title Nodi Maja Maadi. Dayaal, who spoke with emotional overtones in the film, said that he will be completing the film after sixty days of schedule. He said, nearly seventy percent of the shooting will be done near or on a train. I had to toil hard to get the required permission for the shoot. The story starts from Mysore station and ends in Bangalore station. director has taken permission from Railway authorities to shoot the film in Railway station and tracks in Mysore, Konkan Railway and Railway line stretching in Sakleshpura and Subramanya Ghat section.

A joke gone bad, the story is about Dhanush (Ganesh) and his group of friends who live in the railway colony and their meeting point is the railway station.

Redeemer (Wheat Chiefs album)

Redeemer is the first and only album from the Canadian punk-influenced alternative rock band the Wheat Chiefs. The album collects material from three separate recording sessions held between 1992 and 1994, and was released by BangOn Records, a subsidiary of the Canadian label Cargo Records, and the band's own Hom Wreckerds Music imprint.

Background and recording

The Wheat Chiefs was formed early in 1990 by guitarists and twin brothers Marc and Brent Belke after the demise of their previous band, SNFU. Their first recording session came that June, when they cut a demo tape at Technical Difficulties Studio in Edmonton. Many of these songs would later appear on Redeemer in re-recorded form. The band circulated this demo among record executives, to no avail.

Bassist Trenth Buhler and drummer Dave Rees quit the band in early 1992. With new bassist Rob Johnson and drummer Ed Dobek, the group recorded numerous tracks later that year with producer Marek Forysinski, including seven which would later appear on Redeemer. The band recorded "Joe Murphy", a song about the Edmonton Oilers hockey player of the same name with producer Dave Ogilvie later that year. In 1994, the band recorded "Everything" and "Redeem" with Rees returning as a guest drummer, producer Forysinski, and engineer Vince Gotti.

Redeemer (Christianity)

In Christian theology, Jesus is sometimes referred to as a Redeemer. This refers to the salvation he is believed to have accomplished, and is based on the metaphor of redemption, or "buying back". Although the Gospels do not use the title "Redeemer", the word "redemption" is used in several of Paul's letters. Leon Morris says that "Paul uses the concept of redemption primarily to speak of the saving significance of the death of Christ." The English word redemption means 'repurchase' or 'buy back', and in the Old Testament referred to the ransom of slaves (Exodus 21:8). In the New Testament the redemption word group is used to refer both to deliverance from sin and freedom from captivity.

The concept of the redeemer is used in the Book of Ruth to refer to the kinsman-redeemer, and in the Book of Isaiah to refer to God, the "Redeemer of Israel".

Many Christian churches are named "Redeemer", such as Redeemer Presbyterian Church (New York City) and the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Jerusalem. Other institutions which carry the name are the Roman Catholic Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer and Redeemer University College in Ancaster, Ontario. The Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro is a famous landmark.

Redeemer (2004 film)

Redeemer (Portuguese: Redentor) is a 2004 Brazilian drama film, the debut film of director Cláudio Torres.

Plot

In the 70s, in Rio de Janeiro, the neighborhood of Barra da Tijuca was a kind of promised land. One of several buildings on the site was the Paradise Condominium, a luxury building that would be constructed by the contractor of Dr. Sabóia (José Wilker). Celio, still a child, is impressed with the model of the enterprise, shown by his friend Otávio, son of Dr. Sabóia. With the excitement of the son, his parents decide to buy an apartment in Paradise Condominium, the number 808.

However, despite having paid all the benefits for years, the family of Celio would never occupied the apartment again. This is because Dr. Sabóia, after selling the same apartment several times, bankruptcy and left the work incomplete. Fifteen years later, the workers who worked in the construction of the building created a slum beside the Paradise Condominium, and decided to take possession of the apartments and organize a peaceful invasion. With the real estate scandal coming public, Dr. Sabóia committed suicide and left the business in the hands of Otávio (Miguel Falabella). Celio (Pedro Cardoso), working as a reporter, is assigned to cover the case and thus is forced to reconnect with Otávio. Obsessed with the apartment, Célio accepts the proposal of Otávio of being his stooge, in return for $ 5 million.
