The Lok Sabha (English: House of the People) is the lower house of India's Bicameral-Parliament, with the higher house being the Rajya Sabha. Members of the Lok Sabha are elected by adult Universal suffrage and a first-past-the-post system to represent their respective constituencies. Members hold their seats until the body is dissolved by the President on the advice of the council of ministers. The house meets in the Lok Sabha Chambers of the Sansad Bhavan in New Delhi.
Composition
The maximum strength of the House envisaged by the Constitution of India is 552, which is made up by election of up to 530 members to represent the states; up to 20 members to represent the Union Territories and not more than two members of the Anglo-Indian Community to be nominated by the President of India, if, in his/her opinion, that community is not adequately represented in the House. Under the current laws, the strength of Lok Sabha is 545, including the two seats reserved for members of the Anglo-Indian community. The total elective membership is distributed among the states in proportion to their population. A total of 131 seats (18.42%) are reserved for representatives of Scheduled Castes (84) and Scheduled Tribes (47). The quorum for the House is 10% of the total membership.
Narendra Damodardas Modi (Gujarati: [nəreːnd̪rə d̪ɑːmoːd̪ərəd̪ɑːs moːd̪iː], born 17 September 1950) is the 15th and current Prime Minister of India, in office since 26 May 2014. Modi, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014 and is the Member of Parliament (MP) from Varanasi. He led the BJP in the 2014 general election, which gave the party a majority in the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the Indian parliament) – a first for any party since 1984 – and was credited for 2014 BJP electoral victories in the states of Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir.
Since taking office as Prime Minister, Modi's administration has focused on reforming and modernising India's infrastructure and government, reducing bureaucracy, encouraging increased foreign direct investment, improving national standards of health and sanitation and improving foreign relations. Modi has been appreciated for starting initiatives like Swachh Bharat Mission, Make in India and Digital India. Earlier, as Chief Minister of Gujarat, Modi's economic policies (credited with encouraging economic growth in Gujarat) have been praised, although his administration has also been criticised for failing to significantly improve the human development in the state and failing to prevent the 2002 Gujarat riots. A Hindu nationalist and a former member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Modi remains a controversial figure domestically and internationally, despite his progressivism. Known for his tech savvy image, he is the second most followed politician on social media after U.S. President Barack Obama.

Varanasi, located in North India, is one of the most sacred religious cities in all of India. It's a holy place, located next to the Ganges River. Dying in Varanasi is considered sacred, yet at the same time it's a city where people come to celebrate life and to splash in the water of the Ganges. In the Varanasi travel guide I'll go over some of the top things to do in Varanasi. Unlike other huge cities like Delhi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huipm50W2bw), which boast an enormous amount of attractions to see and things to do, Varanasi is more about just being there. You don't have to rush from place to place seeing the sights, but it's all about hanging out either along the Ganges River or within the narrow Varanasi lanes and exploring, observing, and just watching. Spending the time j...
Traveling India: Varanasi. Known as India's Holy City, Varanasi is situated on the banks of the sacred Ganges river and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. During our stay here, we certainly experienced ups and downs. There were serene mornings spent sipping masala chai and gazing into beautiful sunrises over the ganges... combined with intermittent moments of me on the edge of freaking out from the intense noise, traffic and overcrowding. As anywhere in India, beware of getting caught in crowded narrow pathways with men, young boys or bulls, where groping and goring can occur. We found the best masala chai at the rooftop restaurant of Puja guest house, they also have the best 360 degree view of the ganges and city. However we found the rooms at Ganpati Gue...

In Part Three of my India travel video guide, I travel to Varanasi, one of the holiest cities in the Hindu religion. In this video I visit the famous ghats, or steps, which lead into the Ganges River, the holy river where visitors and locals come every day to wash themselves and perform religious ceremonies. It is on the banks of the Ganges where thousands of bodies are burned every year. Having your body burned and its ashes spread here is considered to be one of the holiest places in the world to do so in the Hindu religion. After exploring the riverfront, I stop by a local music shop to play tabla with a local sitar player. Though I was a drummer in a past life, the tabla are a completely different style of playing than I was used to -- you've been warned. I finish up by taking a mo...

Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday challenged Narendra Modi to a face-to-face debate on the latter's claims regarding development in Gujarat, while announcing that he would contest against the BJP's prime ministerial candidate from the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency. Keeping the pressure on Mr. Modi, the Congress raised the stakes in Vadodara in Gujarat — the second constituency from where the BJP leader is contesting — by fielding party general secretary Madhusudhan Mistry, a close aide of party vice-president Rahul Gandhi. The party replaced Narendra Ravat, who had earlier been named as the candidate from Vadodara.
Congress leader Rashid Alvi has written a letter to party president Sonia Gandhi requesting her to allow him to contest against BJP's PM candidate Narendra Modi in Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency. "For the first time, the idea of secular India is under threat. India has a liberal tradition and plural in nature because of which secularism has flourished. The majority of the countrymen has played a crucial and a progressive role in upholding liberal and secular values enshrined in our Constitution, imagined and ingrained by the founding fathers of our Republic," said Alvi in his letter to Sonia. Returning the compliment, Rahul Gandhi will be holding a roadshow in Varanasi on May 10, the last day of campaigning for the parliamentary seat from where BJP's prime ministerial candidate is contesting, to counter Narendra Modi's aggressive campaign in Amethi. Sources said Rahul, Congress vice-president, will be in Varanasi on Saturday for the roadshow. The decision of Gandhi's roadshow in Varanasi was taken after Modi, BJP's prime ministerial candidate, had held a rally in the Congress vice-president's Lok Sabha constituency Amethi on May 5 and targeted the Gandhi family.
