The Nepalese Quoted from an article in Psychology Today, “Almost all of the few polyandrous societies practice what anthropologists call fraternal polyandry, where a group of brothers share a wife." This is the case in the Himalayas, where there is little land available for farming and agriculture, and families with more than one son would be faced with dividing up their land where each son would start their own family.The solution? Find one wife for all of their sons so that they can live together as one family and keep their family plot intact. Also, as told in the National Geographic documentary "Multiple Husbands", this arrangement works best when the wife is adept at "scheduling" time with each brother... 2. Child Marriage In India, the legal marriageable age of a woman is 18, and that of a man is 21. However, this shocking rituals in India is something that is still practiced, especially in the rural communities throughout the country. Child marriage was outlawed in 1929, and since then, preventive laws and their revisions have been promulgated. But these have often met with protests, particularly from Muslim communities, who prefer that the decision best be left to their personal law. While most of the focus is on underage girls getting married, we often forget to consider those underage boys who are given the responsibility of marriage, much too early. 3. Ancient Greece The ancient Greeks did not conceive of sexual orientation as a social identifier the way Western societies have done for the past century. Greek society did not distinguish sexual desire or behavior by the gender of the participants, but rather by the role that each participant played in the sex act, that of the active penetrator or the passive penetrated.This active and passive polarization corresponded with dominant and submissive social roles. The active role was associated with masculinity, higher social status, and adulthood, while the passive role was associated with femininity, lower social status, and youth. 4. Self-Flagellation Self-flagellation is something that is practiced not just in India but also in Pakistan and Bangladesh during Muharram. Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar, and it marks the anniversary of the Battle of Karbala, during which Prophet’s grandson, Hussein ibn Ali, was killed, along with 72 warriors. Shi’a Muslims in the country participate this as a remembrance of their sacrifice. A part of this ritual is self-flagellation, where the mourner flogs his own naked body using chains called Matams, which often have razors attached to them. They mercilessly whip themselves till they are soaked in blood, but claim to feel no pain whatsoever. 5. Baby Dropping One of the most shocking rituals in India is that of a baby dropping which is mainly performed by Muslims and Hindus. At Baba Umer Dargah near Sholapur, Maharashtra, and Sri Santeswar temple near Indi, Karnataka, this ritual has been prevalent for about 700 years. To be blessed with children, people partake in this ritual, where an infant, two years or even less, is dropped from a tower of about 50 feet with crowds standing at the foot of the tower to catch the baby. Thid ritual is believed to bring good luck to the child being thrown down, too. Although, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights is looking to put an end to this as its very dangerous for any new born child...
