Asaduddin Owaisi

Asaduddin Owaisi (born 13 May 1969) is an Indian politician, who is the President of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen. He is a three-time Member of Parliament (MP), representing the Hyderabad constituency in Lok Sabha, the Lower House of the Indian Parliament. He was honoured with Sansad Ratna Award for overall best performance in 15th Lok Sabha in 2014.

Early life

Asaduddin Owaisi was born in Hyderabad, Telangana (former undivided Andhra Pradesh). His father Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi was also a politician from Hyderabad, for six consecutive terms. His mother's name is Najamunnisa. Owaisi studied at the Hyderabad Public School and the St. Mary's Junior College, Hyderabad. He graduated as a Bachelor of Arts from the Nizam College, Osmania University. He later went to London, where he studied L.L.B, and Barrister-at-Law (Lincolns Inn), England. He is often referred as Naqeeb-e-Millat ("Leader of the community") by his supporters. He has two younger brothers, Akbaruddin Owaisi and Burhanuddin Owaisi. Akbar is the member of the Telangana Legislative Assembly from the Chandrayangutta Assembly constituency, while Burhanuddin is the editor of the local Urdu daily "Etemad".

Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh (/ˈʊtər prəˈdɛʃ/, Hindi : उत्तर प्रदेश literally "Northern Province"), abbreviated as UP, is a state located in Northern India. It was created on 1 April 1937 as the United Provinces, and was renamed Uttar Pradesh in 1950. Lucknow is the capital city of Uttar Pradesh. Ghaziabad, Kanpur, Allahabad, Moradabad, Bareilly, Aligarh, Sonbhadra and Varanasi are known for their industrial importance in the state. On 9 November 2000, a new state, Uttarakhand, was carved out from the Himalayan hill region of Uttar Pradesh.

The state is bordered by Rajasthan to the west, Haryana and Delhi to the northwest, Uttarakhand and the country of Nepal to the north, Bihar to the east, Madhya Pradesh to the south and touches small areas of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh to the south eastern corner. It covers 243,290 square kilometres (93,933 sq mi), equal to 6.88% of the total area of India, and is the fourth largest Indian state by area. With over 200 million inhabitants in 2011, it is the most populous state in the country as well as the most populous country subdivision in the world. Hindi is the official and most widely spoken language in its 75 districts. Uttar Pradesh is the third largest Indian state by economy, with a GDP of ₹9763 billion (US$140 billion). Agriculture and service industries are the largest parts of the state's economy. The service sector comprises travel and tourism, hotel industry, real estate, insurance and financial consultancies.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen or AIMIM translation: All India Council of the Union of Muslims) is a Muslim political party in Hyderabad, which has its roots in the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen founded in 1927 in the Hyderabad State of British India. AIMIM has held the Lok Sabha seat for the Hyderabad constituency since 1984. In the 2014 Telangana Legislative Assembly elections, the AIMIM won seven seats and received recognition as a `state party' by the Election Commission of India. The AIMIM was initially a city-based party, with influence only in Old Hyderabad but the party won 2 seats in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election, 2014 and emerged as the second largest party in the Aurangabad municipal elections. The party president and member of parliament Asaduddin Owaisi received the Sansad Ratna Award for 2014.

History

The party has roots back to the days of the princely State of Hyderabad. It was founded and shaped by Nawab Mahmood Nawaz Khan Qiledar of Hyderabad State by the advice of Nawab Mir Osman Ali Khan, the Nizam of Hyderabad and in the presence of Ulma-e-Mashaeqeen in 1927 as a pro-Nizam party. Then it was only Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) and the first meeting was held in the house of Nawab Mahmood Nawaz Khan on November 12, 1927. The MIM advocated the set up of a Muslim dominion rather than integration with India. In 1938 Bahadur Yar Jung was elected President of the MIM which had a cultural and religious manifesto. It soon acquired political complexion and became aligned with the Muslim League in British India. After the Nawab's death in 1944, Qasim Rizvi was elected as the leader.
