Haleakalā (/ˌhɑːliːˌɑːkəˈlɑː/; Hawaiian: [ˈhɐlɛˈjɐkəˈlaː]), or the East Maui Volcano, is a massive shield volcano that forms more than 75% of the Hawaiian Island of Maui. The western 25% of the island is formed by another volcano, Mauna Kahalawai, also referred to as the West Maui Mountains.
The tallest peak of Haleakalā ("house of the sun"), at 10,023 feet (3,055 m), is Puʻu ʻUlaʻula (Red Hill). From the summit one looks down into a massive depression some 11.25 km (7 mi) across, 3.2 km (2 mi) wide, and nearly 800 m (2,600 ft) deep. The surrounding walls are steep and the interior mostly barren-looking with a scattering of volcanic cones.
Early Hawaiians applied the name Haleakalā ("house of the sun") to the general mountain. Haleakalā is also the name of a peak on the south western edge of Kaupō Gap. In Hawaiian folklore, the depression (crater) at the summit of Haleakalā was home to the grandmother of the demigod Māui. According to the legend, Māui's grandmother helped him capture the sun and force it to slow its journey across the sky in order to lengthen the day.

It's my mission to uncover the best of the best and report back to you, so you can get off the internet and on the road ...
Is it worth waking up at 3am to drive almost three hours to see the sunrise over a volcano? That's for you to decide! If I wasn't planning on shooting this video of it, would I have made the trip? HELLLLLL NO. But, that's mostly because I've done it before. I think it's something that everyone should do once. Like I said in the video, it's a rite of passage more than a life-changing experience. It was definitely made more fun by our friends, Jessica Hall and her husband Kyle, and Josh Hall (Jessica's brother) and his fiancé Chelsea. If I didn't promise to buy breakfast for everyone afterwards, I don't think anyone would have made the trip! ;)
I recorded this whole event in about an hour. Then edited and compressed (in time) into 2 minutes. The result is a very dynamic cloud/sun movement. Just bear in mind that when you actually go up there, the clouds and/or the sun do not move this quickly. I love watching the Haleakala Sunrise. I've been to Maui a few times and have gone up there pretty much when I'm there.

Aloha! Today our journey begins at 4am. We're taking you up to the 10,000 ft summit of Haleakala to watch the sunrise. After sunrise, prepare for an extremely windy hike as we go down into the Crater. Hope you like! Thanks for watching! *I had to re-upload this, due to editing issues at the end in yesterday's original upload. Movie maker has a mind of it's own sometimes lol. This version has more photographs in place of the hiking tips. I'll leave all the tips in the down bar here shortly.
A beautiful time-lapse of the sunrise from the top of Haleakala, a 10,000' volcano in Maui. Haleakala is an impressive tourist destination in Maui, Hawaii, high above the rolling clouds and the perfect place for time-lapse photography. I'm a bit unstable, she said
With a Cheshire grin
So many cracks in my sidewalk, boy
Don't you fall in.
Feels like the things that I've wanted
The most in this life
I can't have
So you see I've been damning the world
Before it damns me
She said I'm naked and shameless
And I'm peeling back the layers
Like an onion girl
Don't try to save me
Just stay away
'Cause I might make you cry
Like an onion girl
Like an onion girl
Second grade playground
I still haven't the nerve
Fear is under my skin
Like St. Anthony's fire
And I can't stand the burn
Yeah
So let's break a little bread, have a little laugh
I haven't laughed for a while
'Cause it's a long road back, yes
From the womb tonight
I'm naked, shameless
And peeling back the layers
Like an onion girl
Don't try to save me
Just stay away
'Cause I might make you cry, yes
Like an onion girl
Like an onion girl
She said I'm naked, shameless
And I'm peeling back the layers
Like an onion girl
Don't try to save me
Just stay away
'Cause I might make you cry
Like an onion girl
She said I'm naked and shameless
And peeling back the layers
Like, like an onion girl
Don't try to save me
Just stay away
'Cause I might make you cry
Like an onion girl
Like an onion girl, yeah
