The Korean Peninsula is a peninsula in East Asia. It extends southwards for about 684 miles (1,100 km) from continental Asia into the Pacific Ocean and is surrounded by the Sea of Japan (In Korea known as Donghae/East Sea) to the east, and the Yellow Sea to the west, the Korea Strait connecting the first two bodies of water.
Until the end of World War II, Korea was a single political entity whose territory roughly coincided with the Korean Peninsula. Since the Armistice Agreement ended the Korean War in 1953, the northern division of the peninsula has been governed by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, while the southern portion has been governed by the Republic of Korea.
The northern boundaries for the Korean Peninsula are commonly (and tacitly) taken to coincide with today's political borders between North Korea and its northern neighbors, China (1,416 km (880 mi) along the provinces of Jilin and Liaoning) and Russia (19 km (12 mi)). These borders are formed naturally by the rivers Yalu/Amnok and Tumen/Tuman/Duman. Taking this definition, the Korean Peninsula (including its islands) has an area of 220,847 km2 (85,270 sq mi).
For centuries, the Korean peninsula has been marked by competing dynasties and a political tug-of-war. In the 7th century, the three rival kingdoms were united under the Koryo dynasty, from which the word “Korea” is derived. After WWII, with Chinese and Soviet support, North Korea invaded the south in 1950. The U.S. sent troops to defend its ally and stop the advance of communism.Three years later, fighting in the Korean War ended. But with no peace treaty, North and South Korea are technically still at war. More than 60 years later, the U.S. still has tens of thousands of troops based in South Korea Excerpt from Great Decisions, coming to PBS in 2016 http://www.greatdecisionsonpbs.com/ Narrated by Academy Award nominated actor David Strathairn and produced by the Foreign Policy...

North and South Korea exchanged missile fire over their heavily fortified border. CNN's Kathy Novak reports.
The arrival of the F-22 fighter jets in South Korea has been the latest in a series of moves by the U.S. military after North Korea's recent provocations. These are all leading up to next month's joint South Korea-U.S. military drills. Kwon Jang-ho introduces us to these strategic weapons and what their presences means for both South Korea's and their neighbouring countries. After North Korea's recent missile launch and the nuclear bomb test in January, the U.S. has been quick to move its military assets to the Korean peninsula, on land, sea and air, in an apparent show of force. In the air, the crown jewel in the U.S. air force, four F-22 stealth fighter jets, flew over South Korean airspace on Wednesday. On Aug. 20, North and South Korean forces exchanged fire across the inter-Korean border. The South has also raised its military readiness alert to its highest level, "Jindogae 1". North Korean Ambassador to the UK Hyon Hak Bong speaks at the CPGB-ML international celebration held recently in the party's London HQ in Ealing Southall. The celebration is held annually to mark the importance of international solidarity to the working people in our diverse struggles, and in particular, the anniversary of the victory of the North Korean people over the US imperialists on 27 July 1953, and the storming of the Moncada barracks, on 26th July of the same year, by Castro and his comrades, that gave rise to a powerful revolutionary movement that went on to sweep the Caribbean island of the fascistic Batista regime, and spread Socialism and the message of the October revolution to the shores of the Americas. In this brief excerpt from Ambassador Hyon's speech, he analyses the ...

I've always been very interested in North Korea because it seemed to be one of the most unique and mysterious countries in the whole world. This is my day to day life throughout the 7 days that I spent in North Korea. You can never be sure whether things were staged or not in North Korea because you are only shown what they want you to see. You can't choose where or when you will be going to specific places, they simply tell you to hop on a bus and ask you to get off at one point or another. That is why I didn't want to offer my opinion about whether things were staged or not, whether they were good or not, or honest or not. My goal was to show you what my day to day life looked like when I was there and let you make up your own mind and judge for yourself. Do not judge North Korea only ...

What will removing this specter entail? And with what should it be replaced?similar to the unification of East and West Germany, merging North and South Korea is likely the only means of achieving stability and lasting peace on the peninsula. However, after decades of a divided existencewith South Korea now thriving as a democracy and North Korea barely subsisting as a Stalinist dictatorshipthis task will be monumental. The commitment of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean forces, not to mention the regional scope of the war, was the largest the world had seen and dominated East Asian memory until World War Ii. Despite massive regional realignments, Koreas Chosôn Dynasty endured, but within its polity a national discourse began to emerge. Meant to inspire civilians to rise up against the Japanese army, this potent rhetoric conjured a unified Korea and intensified after the Manchu invasions of 1627 and 1636.by documenting this phenomenon, Jahyun Kim Haboush offers a compelling counternarrative to Western historiograph...
