For centuries, the Korean peninsula has been marked by competing dynasties and a political tug-of-war.

The arrival of the F-22 fighter jets in South Korea has been the latest in a series of moves by the U.S. military after North Korea's recent provocations.
These are all leading up to next month's joint South Korea-U.S. military drills.
Kwon Jang-ho introduces us to these strategic weapons and what their presences means for both South Korea's and their neighbouring countries.
After North Korea's recent missile launch and the nuclear bomb test in January, the U.S. has been quick to move its military assets to the Korean peninsula, on land, sea and air, in an apparent show of force.
In the air, the crown jewel in the U.S. air force, four F-22 stealth fighter jets, flew over South Korean airspace on Wednesday.
Lockheed Martin’s F-22 Raptor is a powerful aircraft capable of 360-degree midair rotations and can clock up to 8,000 flight hours.
It is only one of few aircraft units that can supercruise, or keep up supersonic flight, and can fly at a maximum speed of 2,400 kilometers per hour.
The F-22's stealth technology and high-tech features are so advanced, the jet cannot be exported by U.S. federal law.
Before that a B-52 bomber, capable of carrying 32 tons of weapons, flew over the peninsula in January.
B-2 stealth bombers are also expected to arrive in the next few weeks.
"The F-22 is considered one of the best fighter jets in the world. It's stealth abilities are the model's biggest assets. With it's radar capabilities and weapons, the F-22 is a weapon that can be a great show of force against North Korea."
At the sea, the attack submarine USS North Carolina arrived in the port city of Busan, south of the country, on Tuesday for joint training.
Carrying a crew of 130 people, it can launch Tomahawk cruise missiles and Mark 48 torpedoes.
The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis is to participate in an annual South Korea-U.S. defense drill in March.
The supercarrier is the size of three-football fields, capable of carrying 90 F-16 fighter jets and helicopters, and a crew of 5,000.
And finally on the ground, the U.S. has added an extra battery of patriot missiles over the weekend.
The ground-to-air missile defense system is able to intercept short to mid-range missiles.
Altogether it's a formidable combined force that is being gathered against North Korea on top of the 30-thousand troops that are already stationed in South Korea.
"This show of force is not only a preventive measure against another North Korean provocation, ...but also, efforts by the U.S. to put pressure on the international community to push through talks of sanctions at the UN Security Council."
All this is leading up to next month's joint South Korea-U.S. military exercises, the Key Resolve and Foal Eagle.
It will be the biggest joint military drills the two nations have ever performed, and even before North Korea's recent actions, they had already generated tension with the regime.
But it remains difficult to predict how the North will react.
"North Korea could show further shows-of-strength before or after the Key Resolve drills, such as another rocket launch or a missile launch from the sea...but chances are, rather than retaliating to the U.S.'s pressure, the regime will want to avoid conflict, and perhaps even suggest opening talks."
The U.S.'s show of strength has also had effects on neighboring nations.
China on Wednesday mobilized surface-to-air missiles to their man-made, territorially disputed islands in the South China Sea.
This comes as U.S. president Obama met with ASEAN leaders at a summit in California, with the South China Sea territorial disputes being one of the key agenda on the table...
but the deployment of the missile launchers were also thought to be in response to the U.S.'s military movements in the Korean peninsula.
"The U.S.'s deployment and development of strategic weapons are seen as threats by China. ...In other words, it can be seen that through North Korea's nuclear tests and missile launches, the Korean peninsula as well as the Northeast Asia region as a whole, have been put in the middle of U.S.-China power games."

The Korean Peninsula faced a new standoff between the North and South along the Demilitarized Zone conducting a complicated environment. On Aug. 20, North and South Korean forces exchanged fire across the inter-Korean border. The South has also raised its military readiness alert to its highest level, "Jindogae 1".
The latest exchange comes as tension is high on the Korean Peninsula, following the maiming of two South Korean soldiers by a land mine on August 4 as they were conducting a patrol inside the South Korean half of the 4-kilometer-wide Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ, that separates the two countries. Seoul accused North Korea of infiltrating the DMZ and planting the mine. Also, the South Korea began anti-North propaganda broadcasts from a number of towers along the border.
The North Koreans have issued numerous statements over the past week regarding the start of the broadcasts and the ongoing annual joint Ulchi Freedom Guardian military exercise between the United States and the South. This year's drills, that began on Aug. 17 and are slated to run through to Aug. 28, involve 50,000 South Korean soldiers and 30,000 of the US servicemen. Pyongyang views Ulchi Freedom Guardian as practice for an invasion of North Korea.
Despite the alert levels, however, it is possible that the situation will rapidly de-escalate, because both sides seek to practice restraint to avoid a larger conflict. On Saturday, the two Korean envoys began talks on the border crisis following tensions that saw an exchange of fire, a land mine explosion in the demilitarized border zone and S. Korea's "propaganda broadcasts." As result, N. Korea has admitted it "regrets" S. Korean soldiers' injuries in landmine blasts that fueled the border conflict, as S. Korea has promised to halt its broadcasts into the north. North Korea has also reportedly pledged to end a "semi-state of war," while South Korea will stop its border broadcasts at noon Tuesday if no abnormal situations occur in the near future. Koreas have also reportedly agreed to hold new talks in Seoul or Pyongyang as soon as possible.
However, unlike the March 2010 surprise sinking of the ROKS Cheonan, a South Korean navy corvette, and the November 2010 bombardment of Yeonpyeong Island, the current skirmishes are taking place along the DMZ. Preventing a major escalation is significantly more complicated along this strip, where the presence of two armies in close proximity raises the risk of the escalation.
The situation is further challenged by an aggressive South Korean stance supported by the US. According to Korean military sources the US has been considering to dispatch B-52 or a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber and a nuclear-powered submarine currently stationed at Japan's Yokosuka naval base. In turn North Korea has deployed about 20 amphibious landing craft to the Northern Limit Line, the inter-Korean border in the Yellow Sea. Since the beginning of the standoff last week Pyongyang has doubled its artillery power and sent more than 50 North Korean submarines out for
operations. The US has previously dispatched its military assets to the peninsula to support Seoul in its stand-off with Pyongyang two years ago. In April 2013 it had flown B-2 stealth bombers.
Today, a significant role of solving the crisis in the Korean peninsula belongs to China. For it and Russia the escalation will mean arise of a new hot point around the borders. Amid the economical crisis and a destabilization of much key regions of the world, a new military conflict isn't in interests of China and Russia. In this context, we should point out an aggressive policy of the USA and a militarist rhetoric of South Korea. Once again, the US and its allies use any case for attempts to conduct a military conflict in Eurasia.
Meanwhile the Korean conflict is still unresolved, the region periodically goes through high tension that occasionally result in bloody military collisions. Both sides are keen to avoid a full-scale destabilizing conflict, but with millions of troops facing each other across the DMZ, the risk of escalation is ever present. The current standoff could still rapidly dissipate, but it is important to remember that war is a persistent risk under these circumstances.

North Korean Ambassador to the UK Hyon Hak Bong speaks at the CPGB-ML international celebration held recently in the party's London HQ in Ealing Southall.
The celebration is held annually to mark the importance of international solidarity to the working people in our diverse struggles, and in particular, the anniversary of the victory of the North Korean people over the US imperialists on 27 July 1953, and the storming of the Moncada barracks, on 26th July of the same year, by Castro and his comrades, that gave rise to a powerful revolutionary movement that went on to sweep the Caribbean island of the fascistic Batista regime, and spread Socialism and the message of the October revolution to the shores of the Americas.
In this brief excerpt from Ambassador Hyon's speech, he analyses the current ratcheting up of tension, including nuclear threats, on the Korean Peninsula.
He points out that lamentably, there is nothing new in this situation. There has been crisis after crisis on the Korean peninsula handed down from generation to generation, for over six decades.
The current form of the crisis is traceable directly to the situation left by the USA after their genocidal invasion and illegal partition of the Korean nation in 1950-53, when the US was responsible for the murder of an incredible 4 million Korean people - yet they talk of teh gall to talk about the danger emanating from the 'North Korean Regime'!
Although militarily defeated, by the combined strength of the North Korean troops, allied with the South Korean resistance as well as Soviet Union and in particular Communist China, the US did not sign a peace treaty, but rather an armistice agreement. Thus came about an armed truce that left them in occupation of the south, propping up a fascist dictatorship, now rebranded democracy, and leaving the southern 'Republic of Korea' strewn with massive military airfields, bases, and naval ports.
"For sixty years, we have had neither peace nor war," says Comrade Hyon.
30,000 US troops are permanently stationed in the south, and they have command of a further 1.5 million south Korean men under arms. They have divided the country and patrol its borders aggressively, trampling on the rights of the so called 'independent' republic - where, we should note, it is illegal to express sympathy with the North, or display their flag or other communist symbols, and citizens languish in political prisons for just these crimes.
Moreover, the US is intent on stationing not only more nuclear missiles and submarines in the south, as well as nuclear armed stealth bombers, but they stage with increasing frequency massive military manoeuvres simulating all out nuclear war on the North, aimed at destroying its leadership and occupying its capital.
In light of this constant and ongoing aggression the DPRK (North Korea) has developed a policy of simultaneously developing its infrastructure and military and has overcome considerable technical and economic difficulties to arm itself with conventional and nuclear weapons capable of striking regional US targets.
The US and imperialist mass media is posturing about the 'unstable' North Koreans having nuclear weapons, but it is the US who have the lions share of nuclear weapons, the US who have used them, the US that is aggressively dividing and occupying the Korean nation, the US who has committed genocide in Korea and across the world, and the US that not only maintains a first strike policy but publishes its list of target nations with North Korea prominently atop the list.
All progressive people who have any knowledge of the workings of imperialism - in Iraq, in Libya, in Syria, in Afghanistan, in Central and South America, in Venezuela, in Cuba, and throughout the world must support the right of the North Korea people to self-determination and self defence.
Long live the heroic people of the DPRK and their leadership, the Workers Party of Korea!
Down with imperialist occupation of the South! Korea is one!

Korean Peninsula
The Korean Peninsula is a peninsula in East Asia. It extends southwards for about 684 miles (1,100 km) from continental Asia into the Pacific Ocean and is surrounded by the Sea of Japan (In Korea known as Donghae/East Sea) to the east, and the Yellow Sea to the west, the Korea Strait connecting the first two bodies of water.
History
Until the end of World War II, Korea was a single political entity whose territory roughly coincided with the Korean Peninsula. Since the Armistice Agreement ended the Korean War in 1953, the northern division of the peninsula has been governed by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, while the southern portion has been governed by the Republic of Korea.
The northern boundaries for the Korean Peninsula are commonly (and tacitly) taken to coincide with today's political borders between North Korea and its northern neighbors, China (1,416 km (880 mi) along the provinces of Jilin and Liaoning) and Russia (19 km (12 mi)). These borders are formed naturally by the rivers Yalu/Amnok and Tumen/Tuman/Duman. Taking this definition, the Korean Peninsula (including its islands) has an area of 220,847 km2 (85,270 sq mi).

North Korea has also reportedly pledged to end a "semi-state of war," while South Korea will stop its border broadcasts at noon Tuesday if no abnormal situations occur in the near future. Koreas have also reportedly agreed to hold new talks in Seoul or Pyongyang as soon as possible. However, unlike the March 2010 surprise sinking of the ROKS Cheonan, a South Korean navy corvette, and the November 2010 bombardment of Yeonpyeong Island, the current skirmishes are taking place along the DMZ. Preventing a major escalation is significantly more complicated along this strip, where the presence of two armies in close proximity raises the risk of the escalation. The situation is further challenged by an aggressive South Korean stance supported by the US. According to Korean military sources the US has been considering to dispatch B-52 or a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber and a nuclear-powered submarine currently stationed at Japan's Yokosuka naval base. In turn North Korea has deployed about 20 amphibious landing craft to the Northern Limit Line, the inter-Korean border in the Yellow Sea. Since the beginning of the standoff last week Pyongyang has doubled its artillery power and sent more than 50 North Korean submarines out for operations. The US has previously dispatched its military assets to the peninsula to support Seoul in its stand-off with Pyongyang two years ago. In April 2013 it had flown B-2 stealth bombers. Today, a significant role of solving the crisis in the Korean peninsula belongs to China. For it and Russia the escalation will mean arise of a new hot point around the borders. Amid the economical crisis and a destabilization of much key regions of the world, a new military conflict isn't in interests of China and Russia. In this context, we should point out an aggressive policy of the USA and a militarist rhetoric of South Korea. Once again, the US and its allies use any case for attempts to conduct a military conflict in Eurasia. Meanwhile the Korean conflict is still unresolved, the region periodically goes through high tension that occasionally result in bloody military collisions. Both sides are keen to avoid a full-scale destabilizing conflict, but with millions of troops facing each other across the DMZ, the risk of escalation is ever present. The current standoff could still rapidly dissipate, but it is important to remember that war is a persistent risk under these circumstances. North Korean Ambassador to the UK Hyon Hak Bong speaks at the CPGB-ML international celebration held recently in the party's London HQ in Ealing Southall. The celebration is held annually to mark the importance of international solidarity to the working people in our diverse struggles, and in particular, the anniversary of the victory of the North Korean people over the US imperialists on 27 July 1953, and the storming of the Moncada barracks, on 26th July of the same year, by Castro and his comrades, that gave rise to a powerful revolutionary movement that went on to sweep the Caribbean island of the fascistic Batista regime, and spread Socialism and the message of the October revolution to the shores of the Americas. In this brief excerpt from Ambassador Hyon's speech, he analyses the current ratcheting up of tension, including nuclear threats, on the Korean Peninsula. He points out that lamentably, there is nothing new in this situation. There has been crisis after crisis on the Korean peninsula handed down from generation to generation, for over six decades. The current form of the crisis is traceable directly to the situation left by the USA after their genocidal invasion and illegal partition of the Korean nation in 1950-53, when the US was responsible for the murder of an incredible 4 million Korean people - yet they talk of teh gall to talk about the danger emanating from the 'North Korean Regime'! Although militarily defeated, by the combined strength of the North Korean troops, allied with the South Korean resistance as well as Soviet Union and in particular Communist China, the US did not sign a peace treaty, but rather an armistice agreement. Thus came about an armed truce that left them in occupation of the south, propping up a fascist dictatorship, now rebranded democracy, and leaving the southern 'Republic of Korea' strewn with massive military airfields, bases, and naval ports. "For sixty years, we have had neither peace nor war," says Comrade Hyon. 30,000 US troops are permanently stationed in the south, and they have command of a further 1.5 million south Korean men under arms. They have divided the country and patrol its borders aggressively, trampling on the rights of the so called 'independent' republic - where, we should note, it is illegal to express sympathy with the North, or display their flag or other communist symbols, and citizens languish in political prisons for just these crimes. Moreover, the US is intent on stationing not only more nuclear missiles and submarines in the south, as well as nuclear armed stealth bombers, but they stage with increasing frequency massive military manoeuvres simulating all out nuclear war on the North, aimed at destroying its leadership and occupying its capital. In light of this constant and ongoing aggression the DPRK (North Korea) has developed a policy of simultaneously developing its infrastructure and military and has overcome considerable technical and economic difficulties to arm itself with conventional and nuclear weapons capable of striking regional US targets. The US and imperialist mass media is posturing about the 'unstable' North Koreans having nuclear weapons, but it is the US who have the lions share of nuclear weapons, the US who have used them, the US that is aggressively dividing and occupying the Korean nation, the US who has committed genocide in Korea and across the world, and the US that not only maintains a first strike policy but publishes its list of target nations with North Korea prominently atop the list. All progressive people who have any knowledge of the workings of imperialism - in Iraq, in Libya, in Syria, in Afghanistan, in Central and South America, in Venezuela, in Cuba, and throughout the world must support the right of the North Korea people to self-determination and self defence. After North Korea's recent missile launch and the nuclear bomb test in January, the U.S. has been quick to move its military assets to the Korean peninsula, on land, sea and air, in an apparent show of force.
In the air, the crown jewel in the U.S. air force, four F-22 stealth fighter jets, flew over South Korean airspace on Wednesday.
Lockheed Martin’s F-22 Raptor is a powerful aircraft capable of 360-degree midair rotations and can clock up to 8,000 flight hours.
It is only one of few aircraft units that can supercruise, or keep up supersonic flight, and can fly at a maximum speed of 2,400 kilometers per hour.
The F-22's stealth technology and high-tech features are so advanced, the jet cannot be exported by U.S. federal law.
Before that a B-52 bomber, capable of carrying 32 tons of weapons, flew over the peninsula in January.
B-2 stealth bombers are also expected to arrive in the next few weeks.
"The F-22 is considered one of the best fighter jets in the world. It's stealth abilities are the model's biggest assets. With it's radar capabilities and weapons, the F-22 is a weapon that can be a great show of force against North Korea."
At the sea, the attack submarine USS North Carolina arrived in the port city of Busan, south of the country, on Tuesday for joint training.
Carrying a crew of 130 people, it can launch Tomahawk cruise missiles and Mark 48 torpedoes.
The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis is to participate in an annual South Korea-U.S. defense drill in March.
The supercarrier is the size of three-football fields, capable of carrying 90 F-16 fighter jets and helicopters, and a crew of 5,000.
And finally on the ground, the U.S. has added an extra battery of patriot missiles over the weekend.
The ground-to-air missile defense system is able to intercept short to mid-range missiles.
Altogether it's a formidable combined force that is being gathered against North Korea on top of the 30-thousand troops that are already stationed in South Korea.
"This show of force is not only a preventive measure against another North Korean provocation, ...but also, efforts by the U.S. to put pressure on the international community to push through talks of sanctions at the UN Security Council."
All this is leading up to next month's joint South Korea-U.S. military exercises, the Key Resolve and Foal Eagle.
It will be the biggest joint military drills the two nations have ever performed, and even before North Korea's recent actions, they had already generated tension with the regime.
But it remains difficult to predict how the North will react.
"North Korea could show further shows-of-strength before or after the Key Resolve drills, such as another rocket launch or a missile launch from the sea...but chances are, rather than retaliating to the U.S.'s pressure, the regime will want to avoid conflict, and perhaps even suggest opening talks."
The U.S.'s show of strength has also had effects on neighboring nations.
China on Wednesday mobilized surface-to-air missiles to their man-made, territorially disputed islands in the South China Sea.
This comes as U.S. president Obama met with ASEAN leaders at a summit in California, with the South China Sea territorial disputes being one of the key agenda on the table...
but the deployment of the missile launchers were also thought to be in response to the U.S.'s military movements in the Korean peninsula.
"The U.S.'s deployment and development of strategic weapons are seen as threats by China. ...In other words, it can be seen that through North Korea's nuclear tests and missile launches, the Korean peninsula as well as the Northeast Asia region as a whole, have been put in the middle of U.S.-China power games."

China on Wednesday mobilized surface-to-air missiles to their man-made, territorially disputed islands in the South China Sea.
This comes as U.S. president Obama met with ASEAN leaders at a summit in California, with the South China Sea territorial disputes being one of the key agenda on the table...
but the deployment of the missile launchers were also thought to be in response to the U.S.'s military movements in the Korean peninsula.

The Korean Peninsula faced a new standoff between the North and South along the Demilitarized Zone conducting a complicated environment. On Aug. 20, North and South Korean forces exchanged fire across the inter-Korean border. The South has also raised its military readiness alert to its highest level, "Jindogae 1".
The latest exchange comes as tension is high on the Korean Peninsula, following the maiming of two South Korean soldiers by a land mine on August 4 as they were conducting a patrol inside the South Korean half of the 4-kilometer-wide Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ, that separates the two countries. Seoul accused North Korea of infiltrating the DMZ and planting the mine. Also, the South Korea began anti-North propaganda broadcasts from a number of towers along the border.
The North Koreans have issued numerous statements over the past week regarding the start of the broadcasts and the ongoing annual joint Ulchi Freedom Guardian military exercise between the United States and the South. This year's drills, that began on Aug. 17 and are slated to run through to Aug. 28, involve 50,000 South Korean soldiers and 30,000 of the US servicemen. Pyongyang views Ulchi Freedom Guardian as practice for an invasion of North Korea.
Despite the alert levels, however, it is possible that the situation will rapidly de-escalate, because both sides seek to practice restraint to avoid a larger conflict. On Saturday, the two Korean envoys began talks on the border crisis following tensions that saw an exchange of fire, a land mine explosion in the demilitarized border zone and S. Korea's "propaganda broadcasts." As result, N. Korea has admitted it "regrets" S. Korean soldiers' injuries in landmine blasts that fueled the border conflict, as S. Korea has promised to halt its broadcasts into the north. North Korea has also reportedly pledged to end a "semi-state of war," while South Korea will stop its border broadcasts at noon Tuesday if no abnormal situations occur in the near future. Koreas have also reportedly agreed to hold new talks in Seoul or Pyongyang as soon as possible.
However, unlike the March 2010 surprise sinking of the ROKS Cheonan, a South Korean navy corvette, and the November 2010 bombardment of Yeonpyeong Island, the current skirmishes are taking place along the DMZ. Preventing a major escalation is significantly more complicated along this strip, where the presence of two armies in close proximity raises the risk of the escalation.
The situation is further challenged by an aggressive South Korean stance supported by the US. According to Korean military sources the US has been considering to dispatch B-52 or a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber and a nuclear-powered submarine currently stationed at Japan's Yokosuka naval base. In turn North Korea has deployed about 20 amphibious landing craft to the Northern Limit Line, the inter-Korean border in the Yellow Sea. Since the beginning of the standoff last week Pyongyang has doubled its artillery power and sent more than 50 North Korean submarines out for
operations. The US has previously dispatched its military assets to the peninsula to support Seoul in its stand-off with Pyongyang two years ago. In April 2013 it had flown B-2 stealth bombers.
Today, a significant role of solving the crisis in the Korean peninsula belongs to China. For it and Russia the escalation will mean arise of a new hot point around the borders. Amid the economical crisis and a destabilization of much key regions of the world, a new military conflict isn't in interests of China and Russia. In this context, we should point out an aggressive policy of the USA and a militarist rhetoric of South Korea. Once again, the US and its allies use any case for attempts to conduct a military conflict in Eurasia.
Meanwhile the Korean conflict is still unresolved, the region periodically goes through high tension that occasionally result in bloody military collisions. Both sides are keen to avoid a full-scale destabilizing conflict, but with millions of troops facing each other across the DMZ, the risk of escalation is ever present. The current standoff could still rapidly dissipate, but it is important to remember that war is a persistent risk under these circumstances.

North Korean Ambassador to the UK Hyon Hak Bong speaks at the CPGB-ML international celebration held recently in the party's London HQ in Ealing Southall.
The celebration is held annually to mark the importance of international solidarity to the working people in our diverse struggles, and in particular, the anniversary of the victory of the North Korean people over the US imperialists on 27 July 1953, and the storming of the Moncada barracks, on 26th July of the same year, by Castro and his comrades, that gave rise to a powerful revolutionary movement that went on to sweep the Caribbean island of the fascistic Batista regime, and spread Socialism and the message of the October revolution to the shores of the Americas.
In this brief excerpt from Ambassador Hyon's speech, he analyses the current ratcheting up of tension, including nuclear threats, on the Korean Peninsula.
He points out that lamentably, there is nothing new in this situation. There has been crisis after crisis on the Korean peninsula handed down from generation to generation, for over six decades.
The current form of the crisis is traceable directly to the situation left by the USA after their genocidal invasion and illegal partition of the Korean nation in 1950-53, when the US was responsible for the murder of an incredible 4 million Korean people - yet they talk of teh gall to talk about the danger emanating from the 'North Korean Regime'!
Although militarily defeated, by the combined strength of the North Korean troops, allied with the South Korean resistance as well as Soviet Union and in particular Communist China, the US did not sign a peace treaty, but rather an armistice agreement. Thus came about an armed truce that left them in occupation of the south, propping up a fascist dictatorship, now rebranded democracy, and leaving the southern 'Republic of Korea' strewn with massive military airfields, bases, and naval ports.
"For sixty years, we have had neither peace nor war," says Comrade Hyon.
30,000 US troops are permanently stationed in the south, and they have command of a further 1.5 million south Korean men under arms. They have divided the country and patrol its borders aggressively, trampling on the rights of the so called 'independent' republic - where, we should note, it is illegal to express sympathy with the North, or display their flag or other communist symbols, and citizens languish in political prisons for just these crimes.
Moreover, the US is intent on stationing not only more nuclear missiles and submarines in the south, as well as nuclear armed stealth bombers, but they stage with increasing frequency massive military manoeuvres simulating all out nuclear war on the North, aimed at destroying its leadership and occupying its capital.
In light of this constant and ongoing aggression the DPRK (North Korea) has developed a policy of simultaneously developing its infrastructure and military and has overcome considerable technical and economic difficulties to arm itself with conventional and nuclear weapons capable of striking regional US targets.
The US and imperialist mass media is posturing about the 'unstable' North Koreans having nuclear weapons, but it is the US who have the lions share of nuclear weapons, the US who have used them, the US that is aggressively dividing and occupying the Korean nation, the US who has committed genocide in Korea and across the world, and the US that not only maintains a first strike policy but publishes its list of target nations with North Korea prominently atop the list.
All progressive people who have any knowledge of the workings of imperialism - in Iraq, in Libya, in Syria, in Afghanistan, in Central and South America, in Venezuela, in Cuba, and throughout the world must support the right of the North Korea people to self-determination and self defence.
Long live the heroic people of the DPRK and their leadership, the Workers Party of Korea!
Down with imperialist occupation of the South! Korea is one!

Seoul, South Korea, is truly an amazing city to visit! It's modern, easy to navigate and there's little something everyone will enjoy. The Seoul subway system makes it easy to get around town and discover exactly what the giant city has to offer.
Surrounded by Japan and China, Seoul and South Korea sometimes doesn't get all the attention is deserves . Korea is home to a unique culture, cuisine and a fascinating history. If you ever have the chance to visit Seoul, you'll have a great time!
I traveled to Seoul Korea and was able to do all kinds of things, but I've narrowed this list down to twenty five of the best things to do in Seoul - of course there are other things as well but this list is just the beginning and intended to get your ideas and travel imagination flowing!

If you get a chance to visit Seoul I hope your'e able to do all these wonderful things while you're there!

South Korea Travel Video Guide: South Korea, formally the Republic of Korea is a country in East Asia. South Korea occupies the southern half of the Korean Peninsula, with North Korea to the north, China across the sea to the west and Japan a short ferry ride to the southeast.
Archeological finds of prehistoric toolmaking on the Korean Peninsula date back to 70,000 BC, and the first pottery is found around 8000 BC. Comb-pattern pottery culture peaked around 3500-2000 BC.
Legend has it that Korea began with the founding of Gojoseon (also called Ancient Chosun) by the legendary Dangun in 2333 BC. Archeological and contemporaneous written records of Gojoseon as a kingdom date back to around 7th-4th century BC. Gojoseon was eventually defeated by the Chinese Han Dynasty and its territories were governed by four Chinese commanderies. The political chaos following the fall of the Han Dynasty in China allowed native tribes to regain control of Korea and led to the emergence of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, namely Goguryeo, Silla and Baekje. Despite repeated attempts by China, namely the Sui Dynasty and later the Tang Dynasty, to conquer the Korean Peninsula, northern-based Goguryeo managed to repel them. Eventually, Goguryeo fell to a Silla-Tang alliance, which had earlier defeated Baekje. This unified Korea under the Silla dynasty. Even though Tang later invaded, Silla forces managed to drive them out, thus maintaining Korea's independence.
Unified Silla was replaced by the Goryeo (also called Koryo) dynasty, from which the modern name "Korea" derives. One highlight of the Goryeo dynasty was that in 1234 the world's first metal movable type was invented by a Korean named Choe Yun-ui (200 years before Gutenberg's printing press). Goryeo was replaced by the Joseon (also called Chosun) dynasty, after a coup by one of its generals. The Joseon dynasty ruled Korea from 1392 to 1910, being one of the longest actively ruling dynasties in world history. It was during the early part of the Joseon dynasty that Korean technological inventions such as the world's first water clock, ironclad ship, and other innovations took place. During the rule of King Sejong the Great, the world's first rain gauge was invented and the Korean alphabet known as hangul was created.

I've always been very interested in North Korea because it seemed to be one of the most unique and mysterious countries in the whole world. This is my day to day life throughout the 7 days that I spent in North Korea. You can never be sure whether things were staged or not in North Korea because you are only shown what they want you to see. You can't choose where or when you will be going to specific places, they simply tell you to hop on a bus and ask you to get off at one point or another.
That is why I didn't want to offer my opinion about whether things were staged or not, whether they were good or not, or honest or not. My goal was to show you what my day to day life looked like when I was there and let you make up your own mind and judge for yourself.
Do not judge North Korea only from what you see in this video. This is what they showed us and there's a reason they show some things and not show the others. Also, knowing how much control they exercise over the population, everything could have been staged only for us.

In i-D’s latest video series, tattoo artist and activist Grace Neutral explores how younger generations are challenging traditional views around beauty and body image across the world. Through a number of dramatic body modifications, Grace has evolved from self-confessed alternative weirdo to actual pixie dream-girl with purple eyes, pointed elf ears, a forked-tongue, scarification and no belly button. Interested in ideas of alternative beauty and pushing boundaries of positive body image, the 27-year-old navigates us through changing attitudes to how we look. In the first four episodes of Beyond Beauty, we follow the tattoo-covered alien princess to South Korea as she investigates the ways in which Seoul’s youth conform and challenge mainstream beauty ideals. Although it’s socially acceptable for teenagers to have cosmetic surgery within its six billion dollar domestic beauty industry, it is illegal to be a tattoo artist. From underground tattoo studios to specialist club nights, Grace meets the young South Koreans embracing alternative ideas of beauty and discovers the impact it has on their lives.

A US military official has confirmed that the controversial THAAD anti-missile defense system will be deployed in South Korea within 10 months.
