Located some 400 km (250 mi) north of Baghdad, the original city stands on the west bank of the Tigris River, opposite the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh on the east bank, but the metropolitan area has grown to encompass substantial areas on both the "Left Coast" (east side) and the "Right Coast" (west side) as the two banks are described in the local language.

Dozens of militants have overrun the provincial government headquarters in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, dealing a serious blow to Baghdad's efforts to control a widening insurgency in the country. The insurgents seized the complex late Monday following days of fighting in the country's second-largest city, a former al-Qaida stronghold situated in what has long been one of the more restive parts of Iraq. Several residents reported seeing the gunmen hoisting the black flags inscribed with the Islamic declaration of flags that are used by ISIL, al-Qaida and other jihadist groups. http://news.yahoo.com/iraq-militants-seize-provincial-hq-mosul-city-063829176.html http://www.wochit.com

Thirty years after the worst nuclear accident in history, Chernobyl has become a tourist attraction. Tens of thousands of people are believed to have died prematurely from the catastrophe which spread a radioactive cloud over Europe in 1986, but last year 17,000 people visited the so-called exclusion zone anyway. the battle continues
A large number of displaced residents are taking shelter in nearby camps as the three-week-old offensive by Iraqi security forces to recapture the city of Mosul from Islamic State (IS) extremists intensifies. Families and friends separated for more than two years by IS's grip on Mosul have finally been reunited. "I haven't seen my cousin in three years. My cousin was in Gogjali and I was in Sulaymaniyah," said a man who visited his displaced relatives. More than 22,000 Iraqi people have now managed to flee Mosul's eastern districts and surrounding areas. A camp near Mosul was built just a few weeks ago, and just a few days ago it was still almost empty, but now it's almost completely full. Aid agencies have said that the people here are just coming from the outskirts or the village...
Mosul: A Call for all Islamic State Fighters to lay down their weapons and end this war for they have been deceived.. If Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was indeed the Caliph then Mosul shall never leave his grip.. But if Mosul falls from Baghdadi's grip then it will expose him as a false prophet. Well look around, Mosul is falling
Heavy clashes are underway in the Iraqi city of Mosul as Daesh terrorists seek to slow army’s advance in eastern parts of the city. The Takfiri terrorists tried to stop troops with mortars and car bombs in clashes that dragged into the night. Snipers traded fire from rooftops. Iraqi forces have already taken control of at least six neighborhoods of Mosul. Another army unit advanced in the north near the western bank of the Tigris River, reaching an area just four kilometers from Mosul Airport. On another front, Iraqi forces attacked Daesh positions in the town of Hamam al-Alil which lies along the Tigris River about 15 kilometers south of Mosul.
