A woman has told police she and her young family were mobbed inside a car by a group of youths in a "terrifying" attack in Melbourne's east on Sunday night.
Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident, which involved a group of up to 10 youths, who pummelled the car with two Vortex-style footballs before surrounding the family car.

Family terrified by group of youths
On their way to watch friends play basketball, 3AW listener Fiona and her young family are attacked by 15-20 teens who surrounded them and hit the sides of their car.
The mother, Fiona, who does not want her last name published, told The Age the youths, who appeared to be about 15 or 16-years-old, had stood in front of the car to prevent her husband from driving off.
She claims the teenagers swarmed around the vehicle and began throwing items and jumping on the bonnet.
The couple's one-year-old and three-year-old children were also in the car.
"We had to stop, otherwise we would have hit them," she said.
"When the side mirror smashed, I said I don't care if you hit them. He had to get up the curve to get away, and they still chased the car.
"They had no fear. If we had gotten out of the car, they would have just attacked us."
Fiona says one of the youths was filming the incident on his phone.
The incident has left her shaken and hoping other families don't experience the same thing.
"This behaviour in our society is just not acceptable," she said.
"It will take somebody getting seriously injured before something's done about it, but then it'll be too late. It needs to be dealt with, and not lightly."
Earlier she told 3AW radio that she and her young family were on the way to watch a local basketball game when something hit their car on the Warburton Highway, Yarra Junction, about 6.40pm.
"We were terrified, I was petrified," Fiona said.
"They were coming at the sides of the car, trying to open the car doors, but my husband had locked the car doors."
A police statement said the driver's car sustained minor damage. "Police responded to a dispute between a driver and a group of up to 10 youths at an address on the Warburton Highway," the statement said. "Police have spoken to both parties and investigations are ongoing."
