Amid low oil prices and burgeoning budget deficits, Saudi Arabia annonced it was considering listing the state-owned oil giant Aramco on the Saudi stock exchange.
Aramco is the world's largest company in the oil business and the backbone of the Saudi economy.
But the oil business is not creating enough cash these days. Even with the low oil price, the numbers associated with Aramco highlight why this could be such a significant initial public offer.
Saudi Aramco has crude reserves of about 260bn barrels of oil, which is more than 15 percent of the world's proven oil reserves. If it went public, it could become the first listed company valued at $1 trillion or more, analysts estimate.
Saudi Arabia's $98 billion budget deficit is seen by many analysts as the main reason for the listing, but Saudi officials inists it is part of an attempt to diversify the economy beyond oil and have the private sector play a biger role.
So, will auctioning off a slice of Aramco give Saudi Arabia more time to weather the oil price storm? And how can the Saudi economy deal with the low oil price?
We speak to Fahad Alturki, the chief economist of Jadwa Investment, about oil, Aramco and a trillion-dollar IPO we thought would never happen.

As part of the Saudi royal family's recently announced Vision 2030 plan to modernise the Kingdom, it will sell shares in the state oil company Saudi Aramco on international markets.
It would be the most valuable company in the world, by some estimates worth over $2trn (£1.4trn) - four times the size of its next rival, Apple.
As part of the process, the normally secretive company invited a select group of journalists for a rare visit to its HQ in Dhahran, eastern Saudi Arabia, to meet senior chief executives and hear the company's plan to play a key role in Saudi Arabia's modernisation efforts.
The BBC's Simon Jack spoke to the company's chief executive, Amin Nasser.

Saudi Aramco (Arabic: أرامكو السعودية ʾArāmkō s-Saʿūdiyyah), officially the Saudi Arabian Oil Company, most popularly known just as Aramco (formerly Arabian-American Oil Company) is a Saudi Arabian national petroleum and natural gas company based in Dhahran. Saudi Aramco's value has been estimated at anywhere between US$1.25 trillion and US$10 trillion, making it the world's most valuable company.
Saudi Aramco has both the world's largest proven crude oil reserves, at more than 260 billion barrels (4.1×1010 m3), and largest daily oil production. Saudi Aramco owns, operates and develops all energy resources based in Saudi Arabia. According to 2015 Forbes report, Aramco is said to be the world's largest oil and gas company.
Headquartered in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, Saudi Aramco operates the world's largest single hydrocarbon network, the Master Gas System. Its 2013 crude oil production total was 3.4 billion barrels (540,000,000 m3), and it manages over 100 oil and gas fields in Saudi Arabia, including 288.4 trillion standard cubic feet (scf) of natural gas reserves. Saudi Aramco operates the Ghawar Field, the world's largest onshore oil field, and the Safaniya Field, the world's largest offshore oil field.

As part of the Saudi royal family's recently announced Vision 2030 plan to modernise the Kingdom, it will sell shares in the state oil company Saudi Aramco on international markets.
It would be the most valuable company in the world, by some estimates worth over $2trn (£1.4trn) - four times the size of its next rival, Apple.
As part of the process, the normally secretive company invited a select group of journalists for a rare visit to its HQ in Dhahran, eastern Saudi Arabia, to meet senior chief executives and hear the company's plan to play a key role in Saudi Arabia's modernisation efforts.
The BBC's Simon Jack spoke to the company's chief executive, Amin Nasser.

I would like to make it clear that I do not own the rights to this video and have only posted it as a means of keeping it alive for future generations to be able to view. I have had this VHS tape in my collection since it was given to my father back in Abqaiq, Saudi Arabia in 1983. Hope you enjoy this little piece of Aramco history.

A simple word that for much of the 20th century, and well into the 21st, has meant unimaginable wealth for a very few; plentiful and (for a time, at least) cheap energy for consumers and industries around the globe; deadly conflicts and tensions, as international powers jockeyed to ensure access to wells, fields and pipelines; and, of course, myriad and well-founded worries about the poisoning of land, sea and sky — and still, the world craves more, always more, of the precious stuff.
Before the discovery of oil
On January 15, 1902, 'Abd-al'-Aziz ibn 'Abd al-Rahman Al Sa'ud took Riyadh from the Rashid tribe. In 1913, his forces captured the province of al-Hasa, from the Ottoman Turks. In 1922 he completed his conquest of the Nejd, and in 1925 he conquered the Hijaz. In 1932, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was proclaimed with 'Abd-al'-Aziz as king. Without stability in the region, the search for oil would have been difficult, as evidenced by early oil exploration in neighbouring countries such as Yemen and Oman.
