Volcano Erupts On New Zealand’s White Island; At Least 5 Killed | TODAY
A DEADLY volcanic eruption in New Zealand is expected to claim the lives of up to a further 30 victims.
The majority of the wounded suffer horrific burns to over 70 per cent of their bodies, while many also suffered life-threatening ash inhalation.
The disaster yesterday has so far claimed the lives of six people.
A further eight people are still missing and feared dead as officials warn there are "no signs of life" left on the island.
And those who did manage to escape suffered horrific burns.
Dr Peter Watson, clinical director at Counties Manukau District Health Board, said of the 31 people injured, 27 were left with burns on more than 71 per cent of their bodies – when survival rates plummet.
New Zealander Geoff Hopkins, 50, was on the tour boat with his 22-year-old daughter, Lillani when they witnessed the horrific scene.

Having returned to the boat early, he watched and helped the victims who were brought back along with his daughter.
The pair had been standing at the edge of the crater just 30 minutes before the eruption - and were luckily both trained in first aid.
At first they thought they were "lucky" to see the eruption up close, but say things took a "sinister" turn as visitors began running into the sea, desperately trying to escape and soothe their burns.
Lillani told Stuff: "There were 23 people that had their lives in our hands."
Geoff added: "One of the crew came [below deck] and said 'is anyone a doctor, is anyone a first aider, we need help'. The crew were in shock. They said 'we've got multiple burn victims and we need help'.
"I've never seen burns like it. It was horrific. The people just kept coming and coming."
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said reconnaissance flights showed no signs of life on White Island, as eyewitnesses detailed the horrific burns suffered by some survivors.
"The scale of this tragedy is devastating," Ardern said.
Ardern said tourists from Australia, the United States, Britain, China and Malaysia were among the dead, missing and injured, along with New Zealanders. She has said there would be a government inquiry into the incident.

An Australian professor of geosciences believes tourists should not have even been on Whakaari White island because the volcano is too volatile.
Five people are confirmed dead after the eruption at 2.11pm on Monday.
Eight people are missing on the island and are presumed dead.
Police have confirmed a criminal investigation has been launched.
Emeritus Professor Ray Cas from Monash University's school of Earth Atmosphere and Environment in Australia has visited White Island twice before.
He tells Lisa Owen the island is too remote and unpredictable to be a tourist attraction.

White Island (Ross Archipelago)
White Island is an island in the Ross Archipelago of Antarctica. It is 28 km (15 nmi) long, protruding through the Ross Ice Shelf immediately east of Black Island. It was discovered by the Discovery Expedition (1901–04) and so named by them because of the mantle of snow which covers it. Some 142 km2 of shelf ice adjoining the north-west coast of the island has been designated an Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA 137) because it supports an isolated small breeding population of Weddell seals.

White Island (Nunavut)
White Island is one of the uninhabited Canadian arctic islands in Kivalliq Region, Nunavut, Canada. Located in Foxe Basin off the northern tip of Southampton Island, it measures 789 km2 (305 sq mi) in area.
White Island is separated from Southampton Island by the narrow (less than 2 km) Comer Strait to the west, and Falcon Strait to the south. There are several capes including Cape Middleton, Cape Frigid, and Cape Deas. Whale Sound and Toms Harbour are on the eastern coast, and Frozen Strait is just beyond. White Island is surrounded by several small islands including Passage Island, Whale Island, Seekoo Island, Nas Island, as well as many that are unnamed. The highest peaks are 1,100 m (3,609 ft) and 1,000 m (3,281 ft). While the island is strewn with lakes, the largest is 17 km (11 mi) long.

Tourists should not have been on White Island - geoscientist
An Australian professor of geosciences believes tourists should not have even been on Whakaari White island because the volcano is too volatile. Five people are confirmed dead after the eruption at 2.11pm on Monday. Eight people are missing on the island and are presumed dead. Police have confirmed a criminal investigation has been launched. Emeritus Professor Ray Cas from Monash University's school of Earth Atmosphere and Environment in Australia has visited White Island twice before. He tells Lisa Owen the island is too remote and unpredictable to be a tourist attraction.

A DEADLY volcanic eruption in New Zealand is expected to claim the lives of up to a further 30 victims.
The majority of the wounded suffer horrific burns to over 70 per cent of their bodies, while many also suffered life-threatening ash inhalation.
The disaster yesterday has so far claimed the lives of six people.
A further eight people are still missing and feared dead as officials warn there are "no signs of life" left on the island.
And those who did manage to escape suffered horrific burns.
Dr Peter Watson, clinical director at Counties Manukau District Health Board, said of the 31 people injured, 27 were left with burns on more than 71 per cent of their bodies – when survival rates plummet.
New Zealander Geoff Hopkins, 50, was on the tour boat with his 22-year-old daughter, Lillani when they witnessed the horrific scene.

Having returned to the boat early, he watched and helped the victims who were brought back along with his daughter.
The pair had been standing at the edge of the crater just 30 minutes before the eruption - and were luckily both trained in first aid.
At first they thought they were "lucky" to see the eruption up close, but say things took a "sinister" turn as visitors began running into the sea, desperately trying to escape and soothe their burns.
Lillani told Stuff: "There were 23 people that had their lives in our hands."
Geoff added: "One of the crew came [below deck] and said 'is anyone a doctor, is anyone a first aider, we need help'. The crew were in shock. They said 'we've got multiple burn victims and we need help'.
"I've never seen burns like it. It was horrific. The people just kept coming and coming."
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said reconnaissance flights showed no signs of life on White Island, as eyewitnesses detailed the horrific burns suffered by some survivors.
"The scale of this tragedy is devastating," Ardern said.
Ardern said tourists from Australia, the United States, Britain, China and Malaysia were among the dead, missing and injured, along with New Zealanders. She has said there would be a government inquiry into the incident.

A DEADLY volcanic eruption in New Zealand is expected to claim the lives of up to a further 30 victims.
The majority of the wounded suffer horrific burns to over 70 per cent of their bodies, while many also suffered life-threatening ash inhalation.
The disaster yesterday has so far claimed the lives of six people.
A further eight people are still missing and feared dead as officials warn there are "no signs of life" left on the island.
And those who did manage to escape suffered horrific burns.
Dr Peter Watson, clinical director at Counties Manukau District Health Board, said of the 31 people injured, 27 were left with burns on more than 71 per cent of their bodies – when survival rates plummet.
New Zealander Geoff Hopkins, 50, was on the tour boat with his 22-year-old daughter, Lillani when they witnessed the horrific scene.

Having returned to the boat early, he watched and helped the victims who were brought back along with his daughter.
The pair had been standing at the edge of the crater just 30 minutes before the eruption - and were luckily both trained in first aid.
At first they thought they were "lucky" to see the eruption up close, but say things took a "sinister" turn as visitors began running into the sea, desperately trying to escape and soothe their burns.
Lillani told Stuff: "There were 23 people that had their lives in our hands."
Geoff added: "One of the crew came [below deck] and said 'is anyone a doctor, is anyone a first aider, we need help'. The crew were in shock. They said 'we've got multiple burn victims and we need help'.
"I've never seen burns like it. It was horrific. The people just kept coming and coming."
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said reconnaissance flights showed no signs of life on White Island, as eyewitnesses detailed the horrific burns suffered by some survivors.
"The scale of this tragedy is devastating," Ardern said.
Ardern said tourists from Australia, the United States, Britain, China and Malaysia were among the dead, missing and injured, along with New Zealanders. She has said there would be a government inquiry into the incident.

At least five tourists have died and more are still missing after a massive volcano eruption on a remote island off New Zealand on Monday.
A 12,000ft plume of smoke and rock blasted from the White Island volcano at around 2:10pm local time - just minutes after visitors were apparently spotted trekking through its crater in a chilling last photo.

The volcano on New Zealand's popular White Island suddenly erupted, leaving five people dead and eight others missing.
Over 30 people were left injured and New Zealand police said no signs of life have been seen during multiple reconnaissance flights by rescue helicopters.
As Mike Armstrong reports, the island is a popular destination for tourists, but it's now off limits.

An Australian professor of geosciences believes tourists should not have even been on Whakaari White island because the volcano is too volatile.
Five people are confirmed dead after the eruption at 2.11pm on Monday.
Eight people are missing on the island and are presumed dead.
Police have confirmed a criminal investigation has been launched.
Emeritus Professor Ray Cas from Monash University's school of Earth Atmosphere and Environment in Australia has visited White Island twice before.
He tells Lisa Owen the island is too remote and unpredictable to be a tourist attraction.
