Fund managers are running the numbers on a new childcare roll-up seeking to join the likes of G8 Education and Think Childcare on the ASX-boards.

Mayfield Education plans to acquire 26 centres within two hours drive from Melbourne's central business district, which would have 1941 places and 19 different vendors.

From there it would seek to roll-up the Victorian childcare market and acquire a cluster of centres in another state, according to sources.

Mayfield has been put together by former Fosters Group and Utilicorp executive Peter Lowe and ex-Tabcorp Holdings executive Dean Clarke. Others on board include Mayfield's "expert in regulatory compliance" Michelle Clarke, non-executive director Donald Loccisano and CFO Glenn Raines.

It remains to be seen whether Mayfield can garner investor support. There are plenty of fund managers who have had success backing early-stage roll-ups, although it is no secret that there have also been a few disasters which could temper enthusiasm in some quarters.
