There are few events in film history in which 3 movies mark 14 years in the life of 2 characters, much less the life of 2 actors and a director. But that is the achievement of the "Before" trilogy; Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and Before Midnight for Richard Linklater and his partner actor/writers, Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke. Ethan spoke to David Poland about his history with the series and how it has changed his career and life. Ethan Hawke, Part 1: A Career - http://bit.ly/HegVt7 Shot in Los Angeles, August 2013

Fresh from directing the documentary Seymour: An Introduction — and its memorable Reel Pieces preview one year ago — Ethan Hawke is back playing the jazz trumpet icon Chet Baker. Born to Be Blue is a cinematic riff on musical genius — undermined by drug addiction — set in the late 1950s when Baker was being compared to Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie (both of whom are portrayed in the film). Carmen Ejogo gives a soulful performance as the loving woman who tries to keep Baker away from heroin. Q&A; with Ethan Hawke of BORN TO BE BLUE. Moderated by Stacey Wilson Hunt, Hollywood Editor, New York Magazine. Ethan Hawke lights up the screen as jazz legend Chet Baker, whose tumultuous life is thrillingly reimagined with wit, verve, and style to burn. In the 1950s, Baker was one of the most famous trumpeters in the world, renowned as both a pioneer of the West Coast jazz scene and an icon of cool. By the 1960s, he was all but washed up, his career and personal life in shambles due to years of heroin addiction. In his innovative anti-biopic, director Robert Budreau zeroes in on Baker’s life at a key moment in the 1960s, just as the musician attempts to stage a hard-fought comeback, spurred in part by a passionate romance with a new flame (Carmen Ejogo). Creatively blending fact with fi...
Ethan Hawke—Academy Award-nominated actor (star of Dead Poets Society through Boyhood) and the co-founder and artistic director of the New York-based Malaparte Theater Company—draws on fables, chivalric codes, and a wide range of Eastern and Western philosophical and literary traditions for his third novel, Rules for a Knight. Set in 1483 on the eve of battle, the narrative takes the form of a letter written by Sir Thomas Lemuel Hawke to his four children; fearing he won’t survive, he leaves twenty virtues to see them through in his stead. Hawke is in conversation with Margaret Talbot. Founded by Carla Cohen and Barbara Meade in 1984, Politics & Prose Bookstore is Washington, D.C.'s premier independent bookstore and cultural hub, a gathering place for people interested in reading and dis...

Hawke's great grandfather and Williams' father were brothers. Lives in New York City. Was accepted by Carnegie-Mellon University, School of Drama in Pittsburgh, PA, but dropped out after only 5 months. The girls who like me aren't the ones I like. Or, if I do and they want to commit, I suddenly need tons of time with my friends. We live in a funny time. If you don't go corporate, you can't compete. You're relegated as irrelevant. People used to admire that. I kill flies, I eat meat, you know, whatever. Everyone has to pay their child support, and no matter if you're a Hollywood actor or anyone else, it's always a little bit more than you want to pay. I think having nature be a part of people's lives helps all of us see ourselves as part of something larger. It was never in my dreams to make my personal life anybody else's business.

All those men were there inside,
when she came in totally naked.
They had been drinking:
they began to spit.
Newly come from the river,
she knew nothing.
She was a mermaid
who had lost her way.
The insults flowed down
her gleaming flesh.
Obscenities drowned
her golden breasts.
Not knowing tears,
she did not weep tears.
Not knowing clothes,
she did not have clothes.
They blackened her
with burnt corks and cigarette stubs,
and rolled around
laughing on the tavern floor.
She did not speak
because she had no speech.
Her eyes were the colour of distant love,
her twin arms were made of white topaz.
Her lips moved, silent, in a coral light,
and suddenly she went out by that door.
Entering the river she was cleaned,
shining like a white stone in the rain,
and without looking back she swam again
swam towards emptiness, swam towards death.
