Stockton is the county seat of San Joaquin County in north−central California and is about 50 miles south of Sacramento. It was founded by Captain Charles Maria Weber in 1849 after he acquired Rancho Campo de los Franceses. It has previously been known by several other names such as "Tuleburg", "Fat City," and "Mudville. The city is named after Robert F. Stockton and was the first community in California to not be named from a Spanish or Native American origin. The city is located on the San Joaquin River in northern San Joaquin Valley and has an estimated population, in 2015, of 291,707. Hispanics and Latinos make up the largest percentage of any race in this city's population. It was named an All-America City in the year 1999 and 2004 and is home to the largest inland seaport in California. It is the 13th largest city in California and the 63rd largest city in the United States. As a result of regional losses to the economy due to the 2008 financial crisis, Stockton was the second largest city in the U.S. to file for bankruptcy protection. It has been home to the oldest university in California, University of the Pacific since 1923.
KTXL, virtual channel and UHF digital channel 40, is a Fox–affiliated television station located in Sacramento, California, United States. The station is owned by the Tribune Broadcasting subsidiary of the Tribune Media Company. KTXL maintains studio facilities located on Fruitridge Road on the southern side of Sacramento, and its transmitter is located near Walnut Grove.
The UHF channel 40 frequency in Sacramento was first occupied by KCCC-TV, which signed on in September 1953. It was affiliated with all four television networks of the time: ABC, CBS, NBC and the DuMont Television Network. KCCC's first broadcast was the 1953 World Series between the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers. The station became a primary ABC affiliate by 1955, after KCRA-TV (channel 3) and KBET-TV (channel 10, now KXTV) signed on, respectively taking over NBC and CBS full-time; and dropped DuMont after that network folded in 1956. It was the Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto area's first television station. However, as a UHF station, it suffered in the ratings because television sets were not required to incorporate UHF tuning until the All-Channel Receiver Act went into effect in 1964. Although its fate was sealed when the first VHF stations signed on in the area, it managed to hang on until 1957. The ABC affiliation moved to KOVR (channel 13) after KCCC-TV and KOVR reached an agreement to merge operations and turn over the KCCC license to the Federal Communications Commission.
1984 (MCMLXXXIV) was a leap year starting on Sunday (dominical letter AG) of the Gregorian calendar, the 1984th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 984th year of the 2nd millennium, the 84th year of the 20th century, and the 5th year of the 1980s decade.

This was the main promo for KTXL's Newstar 40 satellite truck, which made it easier to do live reports. "Beyond The Nut Tree" refers to the Nut Tree in Vacaville, a sort of restaurant and mini-amusement park that was a landmark for many years and torn down a few years ago. Don't know how they got Leslie Nielsen to do these promos, there were a couple others with him as well.

Sunday night/Monday morning was a no-mans-land on TV for a long time, at least around here. Stations that usually stayed on the air all night would sign-off on Sunday nights, like KTXL which had "Night Comfort Theater" every other night of the week. (In fact, even in its current incarnation KTXL just started running programming all night Sunday a few months ago.) In the Sacramento area during the 1980s, KXTV channel 10 was the ONLY station that ran programming all night on Sundays since CBS News Nightwatch was on (which strangely the neighboring CBS affiliates didn't carry and would sign off on some nights instead!) This sign-off clip features TV-40's main announcer, Jerry Chambers (thanks to hdjanitor for giving me his name!) Background music is an instrumental version of the stati...

This is the other version of TV-40's "Go For The Stars" theme song, geared to the adult audience. Again, the hot-air balloon is at the end because their previous theme was "Take off with TV40" and had a family up in the balloon. Sadly this would be about the last year of greatness for KTXL, as they later gave in to complaints and started cutting their movies, then the Fox network started up and ruined what was left.
Old school block of rare ads from (I think) September 1, 1995. -Richard Bey promo for shows about girls who strip or are promiscuous -Home Improvement, 5 nights a week -Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey coming to Arco Arena. -Chevron, "people do", environmental ad about how emission rates had reduced in the previous 20 years -Dodge Labor Day closeout sales. -California Back and Neck Pain (#1, black and white reel, guy falls off a cliff) -47th Annual Emmy Awards, In Living Color spot -Big Red "a little longer" gum jingle. -Gary C.
