Lala VC (20 April 1876 – 23 March 1927) was an Indian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth soldiers.
Lala was born at Parol, Hamirpur district, Himachal Pradesh, India in 1876. He entered the Indian Army in February 1901. He was 38 years old, and a Lance-Naik in the 41st Dogras, Indian Army, when he was awarded the VC during World War I for most conspicuous bravery.
The citation reads:
Finding a British officer of another regiment lying close to the enemy, he dragged him into a temporary shelter, which he himself had made, and in which he had already bandaged four wounded men. After bandaging his wounds he heard calls from the Adjutant of his own regiment who was lying in the open severely wounded. The enemy were not more than one hundred yards distant, and it seemed certain death to go out in that direction, but Lance Naik Lala insisted on going out to his Adjutant, and offered to crawl back with him on his back at once. When this was not permitted, he stripped off his own clothing to keep the wounded officer warmer, and stayed with him till just before dark, when he returned to the shelter.
Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna, KCMG, KBE (22 April 1888 – 30 May 1958) was a Fijian chief, scholar, soldier, and statesman. He is regarded as the forerunner of the post-independence leadership of Fiji. He did more than anybody to lay the groundwork for self-government by fostering the development of modern institutions in Fiji, and although he died a dozen years before independence from the United Kingdom was achieved in 1970, his vision set the course that Fiji was to follow in the years to come.
Josefa Lalabalavu Vana'ali'ali Sukuna was born into a chiefly family on Bau, off the island of Viti Levu, the largest island in the Fiji archipelago. His father, Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi, was the son of the Bauan noble and rebel leader Ratu Mara Kapaiwai.
After joining the Audit Office as a clerk at an early age, Ratu Madraiwiwi had steadily worked his way up through the civil service, establishing connections along the way that were later to prove decisive in the life of his son. Ratu Sukuna's mother, Adi Litiana Maopa, was the eldest and daughter of the Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba I, the heir of the Tui Nayau, Taliai Tupou (High Chief of Lau).

Melaia Dimuri -- Missed Roko Melaia Vakacegu Beatrice Lutukivuya Dimuri Friends and fans of Melaia Dimuri would be saddened by the news of her passing last week. Melaia was known for 2 hits CBM (Cakaudrove Bua Macuata) and Veibogi Kece. She was a member of the Dragon Swingers band entertaining at the Dragon Nightclub with Ken Jensen, Tom Mawi and other reknowned musicians. In fact Ken abandoned a possible medical career for music. This is an article by Tori Tokalau in the Fiji Times: Ms Dimuri was among female singers in Fiji who stirred up the local scene with her amazing talent and catchy tunes in the 1970s. "I remember when I was young and we weren't allowed into the Dragon Nightclub, I would run away from my home in Raiwai and sit by the flower beds outside the club just...
Suva is the capital of Fiji. It lies on the southeast coast of the main island of Viti Levu and is well worth a guided tour. Our guide showed us downtown, Harbour Centre, Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna Statue of the City Centre, Fiji parliament, Albert Park, the Fiji Museum, the guard at the entrance of the presidential palace and the many bats. After a little shopping spree in Downtown the short visit was also fast. I thought it was worth it. Link: http://www.fiji.travel/destinations/suva Suva ist die Hauptstadt Fidschis. Fiji became a colony in 1874 when the Fijian tribal chief, Ratu Seru Epenisa Cakobau, voluntarily ceded the islands to Britain. The British operated a system of indirect rule in Fiji, under which the British Governor worked in consultation with village chiefs with a policy of preserving native traditions (McIntyre, 2001, 668). By the end of the decade, the British had created their first sugar plantations. Here they disallowed the use of Fijian labour, due to the islanders' tradition of subsistence agriculture, and instead brought in contracted Indian workers (McIntyre, 2001, 668-69). Indians soon made up a substantial proportion of the population of Fiji, and from 1946 until 1989 were in the majority on the islands (McIntyre, 2001, 680-81). Since independence, the parliament of Fiji has b...
