The Parallax View (1974)
Plot
Joe Frady is a determined reporter who often needs to defend his work from colleagues. After the assassination of a prominent U.S. senator, Frady begins to notice that reporters present during the assassination are dying mysteriously. After getting more involved in the case, Frady begins to realize that the assassination was part of a conspiracy somehow involving the Parallax Corporation, an enigmatic training institute. He then decides to enroll for the Parallax training himself to discover the truth.

There is no conspiracy. Just twelve people dead. As American as apple pie.,
Quotes:
Gail: They say a martini is like a woman's breast: one ain't enough and three is too many.
Joseph Frady: [to Deputy Sheriff] Don't touch me unless you love me.
Carroll Commission Spokesman: Ladies and gentlemen, you have been invited here today for the official announcement of the inquiry into the death of Senator Charles Carroll. This is an announcement, not a press conference. Therefore, there will be no questions. A complete transcript of the investigation is being prepared for publication on March 1st. At that time, the committee will hold a full-scale press conference. After nearly four months of investigation, followed by nine weeks of hearings, it is the conclusion of this committee that Senator Carroll was assassinated by Thomas Richard Linden. It is our further conclusion that he acted entirely alone, motivated by a sense of patriotism and a psychotic desire for public recognition. The committee wishes to emphasize that there is no evidence of any wider conspiracy; no evidence whatsoever. It's our hope that this will put an end to the kind of irresponsible and exploitive speculation conducted by the press in recent months, as I've said in the complete text of the hearings, which provides the bases for the committee's findings which will be published on March 1st. When you've had a chance to examine the evidence, you'll have every opportunity to ask those questions which remain unanswered, if they are any. That is all. Thank you.
[last lines]::Hammond Commission Spokesman: Ladies and gentlemen, you've been invited here today for the official announcement of the inquiry into the death of George Hammond. A complete transcript of the investigation is in preparation. This committee has spent nearly six months of investigation, followed by eleven weeks of hearings. After careful deliberation, it is concluded that George Hammond was assassinated by Joseph Frady. An overwhelming body of evidence has revealed that Frady was obsessed with the Carroll assassination, and in his confused and distorted state of mind seems to have imagined that Hammond was responsible for the senator's death. He was equally convinced that Hammond was somehow plotting to kill him. And it is for those reasons that Frady assassinated him. Although I'm certain that this will do nothing to discourage the conspiracy peddlers: there is no evidence of a conspiracy in the assassination of George Hammond. Those are our findings. The evidence will be available as soon as possible. Thank you. This is an announcement, gentlemen. There will be no questions.
Bill Rintels: When I agreed to take you back in January I made two suggestions. One was about your drinking. Well, you seem to have licked that. The other was that you curb your talent for creative irresponsibility: you can start working on that right now.
Joseph Frady: Look, why don't you go out and bust up a keno game. Do something worthwhile for chrissakes, you two bit vice squad, you're not only dumb, you're dirty.
Bill Rintels: [after Frady's run-in with police] You're enjoying yourself, aren't you.::Joseph Frady: You gotta admit, it's funny.::Bill Rintels: It makes me laugh, but I don't think it's funny.::Joseph Frady: What's that supposed to mean?::Bill Rintels: Have you ever laughed at a comedian when he pretended to stutter? There's nothing funny about a man who stutters, but people laugh. They're amused. But they're not happy about it.
Bill Rintels: We're in the business of reporting the news, not creating it.
Deputy Red: [Frady's just ordered milk at a bar.] Can I buy you a drink, miss? You know there for a moment, I thought you were a man. But you aren't are you?::Joseph Frady: No, I'm a girl.::Deputy Red: Why don't you go right over there and tell those people that? Real loud. [grabs Frady's jacket.]::Joseph Frady: Don't touch me unless you love me.
Sheriff L.D. Wicker: [Frady just beat up Deputy Red.] You just come over here and sit down. You're alright, son.::Joseph Frady: Listen, you wouldn't be offended if I called the police, would you?::Sheriff L.D. Wicker: No, but you don't have to call very far because Red's a deputy. And if that isn't good enough, I'm the sheriff.::Joseph Frady: You got some interesting ideas about law enforcement.::Sheriff L.D. Wicker: I could have stopped the fight. I would have if you'd have been gettin' whipped, but I dearly love seeing ol' Red get stomped.::Joseph Frady: He's your deputy?::Sheriff L.D. Wicker: Well, you see he's my sister's boy. Had to do something nice for her, he's so damn mean he can't get along with anybody else. He's dumb. He's a real turkey. You know, you move his plate five inches, that boy's gonna starve to death.

A corporation devoted to political assassinations?! What seemed pretty far out to some critics in 1974 doesn't look quite so unlikely nearly 40 years later. Rich "Solid" Stanton and Marsh "Diamond" Davies snipe, sneak and snake their way through the side-ops of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Will they preserve Marsh's record of near 100% non-lethal stealth? (No.) Will they drink enough to earn the nickname "Liquid"? (Possibly.) Will they attach a lot of men to balloons? (Guaranteed.)

"Willis collaborated with director Alan Pakula on a trilogy of films that established the paranoid thriller as one of the touchstones of 1970s American cinema. After Klute (1971) and All the President’s Men (1976), The Parallax View offers perhaps the most perfect example of the genre through its tale of a sinister and far-reaching conspiracy of ruthless political assassination. Willis is a master at conveying omnipresent yet invisible menace in scenes alternately wrapped in his signature shroud of darkness and bathed in a cool, cruel, blinding daylight. The harrowing climactic sequence of The Parallax View – an incredible example of what the 'pure cinema' championed by Hitchcock in which the story is propelled by expressive image and montage over dialogue – contrasts the made-for-TV brightness of a political rally with the nebulous, pulsing shadows in the wings, whispering behind the lights and the cameras." – Harvard Film Archive

Slavoj Žižek | The Euthanasia of Tolerant Reason | Full Film
A lecture adopted after his book "Parallax View". Zizek himself describes it as his magnum opus. Parallax can be defined as the apparent displacement of an object, caused by a change in observational position. Zizek is interested in the "parallax gap" separating two points between which no synthesis or mediation is possible, linked by an "impossible short circuit" of levels that can never meet. Fr

The Parallax View
The Parallax View, a superb drama about one man's paranoia that turns out to be total, incredible fact, ranks amount the best political thrillers. Warren Beatty is a news reporter who, along with seven others, witnesses the assassination of a political candidate. When the other seven die in "accidents," the newsman begins to doubt the official position: that a lone madman was responsible for the c

Slavoj Zizek | The Monstrosity of Christ Paradox or Dialectic
What matters is not so much that Žižek is endorsing a demythologized, disenchanted Christianity without transcendence, as that he is offering in the end (despite what he sometimes claims) a heterodox version of Christian belief.”--John Milbank“To put it even more bluntly, my claim is that it is Milbank who is effectively guilty of heterodoxy, ultimately of a regression to paganism: in my atheism,

From this consideration of parallax, Zizek begins a rehabilitation of dialectical materialism.Modes of parallax can be seen in different domains of today's theory, from the wave-particle duality in quantum physics to the parallax of the unconscious in Freudian psychoanalysis between interpretations of the formation of the unconscious and theories of drives. In The Parallax View, Zizek, with his usual astonishing erudition, focuses on three main modes of parallax: the ontological difference, the ultimate parallax that conditions our very access to reality; the scientific parallax, the irreducible gap between the phenomenal experience of reality and its scientific explanation, which reaches its apogee in today's brain sciences (according to which "nobody is home" in the skull, just stacks of brain meat--a condition Zizek calls "the unbearable lightness of being no one"); and the political parallax, the social antagonism that allows for no common ground. Between his discussions of these three modes, Zizek offers interludes that deal with more specific topics--including an ethical act in a novel by Henry James and anti-anti-Semitism.The Parallax View not only expands Zizek's Lacanian-Hegelian approach to new domains (notably cognitive brain sciences) but also provides the systematic exposition of the conceptual framework that underlies his entire work.

The Parallax View, a superb drama about one man's paranoia that turns out to be total, incredible fact, ranks amount the best political thrillers. Warren Beatty is a news reporter who, along with seven others, witnesses the assassination of a political candidate. When the other seven die in "accidents," the newsman begins to doubt the official position: that a lone madman was responsible for the crime. He imagines a sophisticated network of highly trained murderers. But his nightmares pale against the bizarre truth he uncovers.

What matters is not so much that Žižek is endorsing a demythologized, disenchanted Christianity without transcendence, as that he is offering in the end (despite what he sometimes claims) a heterodox version of Christian belief.”--John Milbank“To put it even more bluntly, my claim is that it is Milbank who is effectively guilty of heterodoxy, ultimately of a regression to paganism: in my atheism, I am more Christian than Milbank.”--Slavoj ŽižekIn this corner, philosopher Slavoj Žižek, a militant atheist who represents the critical-materialist stance against religion’s illusions; in the other corner, “Radical Orthodox” theologian John Milbank, an influential and provocative thinker who argues that theology is the only foundation upon which knowledge, politics, and ethics can stand. In The Monstrosity of Christ, Žižek and Milbank go head to head for three rounds, employing an impressive arsenal of moves to advance their positions and press their respective advantages. By the closing bell, they have not only proven themselves worthy adversaries, they have shown that faith and reason are not simply and intractably opposed. Žižek has long been interested in the emancipatory potential offered by Christian theology. And Milbank, seeing global capitalism as the new century’s greatest ethical challenge, has pushed his own ontology in more political and materialist directions. Their debate in The Monstrosity of Christ concerns the future of religion, secularity, and political hope in light of a monsterful event--God becoming human. For the first time since Žižek’s turn toward theology, we have a true debate between an atheist and a theologian about the very meaning of theology, Christ, the Church, the Holy Ghost, Universality, and the foundations of logic. The result goes far beyond the popularized atheist/theist point/counterpoint of recent books by Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, and others. Žižek begins, and Milbank answers, countering dialectics with “paradox.” The debate centers on the nature of and relation between paradox and parallax, between analogy and dialectics, between transcendent glory and liberation. Slavoj Žižek is a philosopher and cultural critic. He has published over thirty books, including Looking Awry, The Puppet and the Dwarf, and The Parallax View (these three published by the MIT Press). John Milbank is an influential Christian theologian and the author of Theology and Social Theory: Beyond Secular Reason and other books. Creston Davis, who conceived of this encounter, studied under both Žižek and Milbank.

Public lecture by Slavoj Žižek within the framework of the ICI’s core project “Tension/Spannung” 6 Mär '09
Sigmund Freud introduces his notorious concept of the “Todestrieb”, the “death drive” in his famous essay “Jenseits des Lustprinzips” (“Beyond the Pleasure Principle”) of 1920. This text has intrigued and puzzled many readers as it relates the death drive to both the so-called “Nirvana principle” aiming at a state without tension and the repetition compulsion, the almost mechanical kernel of the drive itself. If Freud’s death drive stands here philosophically between negation (Schopenhauer) and affirmation (Nietzsche) of the will, Slavoj Žižek insists that we should not confuse the death drive with the craving for self-annihilation, for the return to the inorganic absence of any life-tension. As his Parallax View states, the death drive is, on the contrary, “the very opposite of dying – a name for the 'undead' eternal life itself, for the horrible fate of being caught in the endless repetitive cycle of wandering around in guilt and pain.” In Žižek’s Lacanian reading, the (death) drive represents a 'diabolic' dimension of human beings in opposition to a desire for the lost object that would overcome all differences and tensions. Its articulation as a philosophical concept is certain to lead us also to a deeper understanding of the concept of tension.
Slavoj Žižek is Professor in the Department of Philosophy, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. He has gained wide recognition with his characteristic combination of high and low, of Lacanian theory, pop cultural issues and Post-Marxism. He has published a high number of books, edited several collections, and published numerous philosophical and political articles.

The assassination and the subsequent conspiracy theories surrounding his death have been the topic for many films, including:
the 1966 Emile de Antonio documentary Rush to Judgment, based on Mark Lane's book;
David Miller's 1973 Executive Action;
Nigel Turner's 1988, 1991, 1995 and 2003 continuing documentary The Men Who Killed Kennedy.
Oliver Stone's 1991 JFK,[1] based in part upon the book On the Trail of the Assassins by former Orleans Parish (Louisiana) District Attorney Jim Garrison.
The Rat Pack, a 1998 HBO TV film about the group of entertainers giving their contribution to Kennedy's election in 1960. He was portrayed by William Petersen.
Other filmmakers have drawn inspiration from the assassination, rather than portraying it directly:[citation needed]
The 1974 film The Parallax View is about a senator who is assassinated, with the assassin himself dying violently quickly thereafter. The protagonist, an investigative reporter played by Warren Beatty, is on the verge of solving the mystery when another senator is murdered. This time, he gets blamed for the murder, also posthumously.[vague]
The 1979 French film I comme Icare takes place in a fictional Western country, and tells the story of a presidential assassination from the viewpoint of one of the dissenting members of a Presidential committee similar to the real-world Warren Commission. He then starts his own investigation. The title is from the Greek myth about Icarus, who flies too close to the sun. The investigator himself is killed when he comes too close to the truth.
In the 1979 film Winter Kills, U.S. President Timothy Kegan is shot at Hunt Plaza in Philadelphia. The ensuing Presidential commission condemns a lone gunman as the killer. The film starts years later, when Kegan's half-brother, Nick, witnesses the death-bed confession of a man claiming to have been part of the "hit squad".
In 1975, a San Francisco-based group of artists called Ant Farm reenacted the Kennedy assassination in Dealey Plaza, and documented it in a video called The Eternal Frame. Two years later, the assassination was re-enacted again as part of the ABC television movie The Trial of Lee Harvey Oswald, looking at what might have happened had Jack Ruby not prevented Oswald from going to court. The 1983 NBC TV mini series Kennedy showed the assassination from Jackie Kennedy's perspective.
Andy Warhol's 1966 film Since recreated the assassination from multiple perspectives with participants from The Factory.[2] Since is heavily improvised and explores the media portrayal of the assassination.
JFK assassination have also been treated humorously:
In the TV series Seinfeld, episode "The Boyfriend, Part 1" (1992), a ballpark spitting incident is revisited, and a "second spitter" theory, à la the second gunman theory, is discussed, in a parody of the final courtroom scene in JFK. In another episode, Elaine said that a relative worked in the book depository building with Lee Harvey Oswald. Elaine said that when her relative told Oswald that Kennedy had been shot, Oswald "winked at him and said 'I'm gonna catch a movie'".
The 2002 film Interview With the Assassin presents the assassination and resultant conspiracy theories in mock documentary fashion, with a terminally ill former Marine named Walter Ohlinger who claims that he was the second gunman behind the fence on the grassy knoll. In the same year, in Bubba Ho-tep, Ossie Davis played an assassination-obsessed character with a scale model of Dealey Plaza, and photos of the various players on his wall.
The award-winning (titanic)[clarification needed] short film My Dinner With Oswald, directed by Paul Duane and written by Donald Clarke, focuses on a re-creation of the assassination at a Dublin dinner party.
In the Comedy Central series Strangers with Candy, Stephen Colbert's character asserts that "Fidel Castro impersonated Marilyn Monroe and gave President Kennedy a case of syphilis so severe that eventually it blew the back of his head off."
The "Sibling Rivalry" episode of Family Guy showed a cutaway gag after a character had been called a bad marksman "nearly as bad as Lee Harvey Oswald."
