A man has died and a woman is in hospital after a car hit a tree in Wheelers Hill, south-east of Melbourne.
A police spokesman said it's believed a silver hatchback struck a tree as it travelled inbound on Ferntree Gully Road, about 2.50pm Saturday.
The male driver died at the scene and a female passenger was taken to The Alfred in a stable condition, with non-life threatening injuries.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash, the man is yet to be identified.
VicRoads has advised motorists to avoid Ferntree Gully Road at Watsons Road because it remains closed following the crash.
