Thor and Iron Man go high art, with ‘world first’ Marvel exhibition at Brisbane’s GoMA

Thor might've already been seen stalking Brisbane's sunny streets, hammer in hand, in recent months, but now he's bringing along the rest of his Avengers super crew – and no, not for some epic world-saving mission, but rather for a groundbreaking Marvel museum exhibition.

Titled 'Marvel: Creating the Cinematic Universe' – and to be held next year at Brisbane's GoMA (Gallery of Modern Art) – the huge exhibition will showcase costumes, props and original artwork from across the Marvel universe (both films and comics), in what's being billed as the "largest ever Marvel presentation in an art museum, worldwide."

In a statement announcing the exhibition, Queensland Premier and Minister for the Arts Anastacia Palszczuk said the huge get was the result of the state's funding up to $10.8 million for blockbusters at Brisbane galleries, as well as fan excitement over Queensland's local production of Thor: Ragnarok – Marvel's upcoming blockbuster, helmed by NZ director Taika Waititi and starring Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston.

"The filming of Thor: Ragnarok in Brisbane's CBD generated a Marvel buzz that is certain to continue with the opportunity for comic book and movie fans to exclusively view pieces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe," she said.

The exhibition, drawing on Marvel Studio's own official vaults as well as private collections, will feature over 300 items, including original costumes and props from Marvel's recent movies, as well as artwork from their almost 80-year history in comics.

The exhibition, a "world first", will also mark the first time characters like Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow and The Hulk – perhaps more attuned to popcorn-strewn theatres or the messy backpacks of bespectacled high school kids – share rarefied gallery air with the likes of Cindy Sherman and sculptor Anish Kapoor.

GoMA, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this summer, has previously showcased popular exhibitions on the work of Andy Warhol, Yayoi Kusama, Valentino and David Lynch.
