Calwell man charged with hitting pregnant partner with baseball bat, refused bail

A Calwell man accused of hitting his pregnant partner with a baseball bat and pushing her to the ground has been refused bail.

The 30-year-old was arrested on Friday afternoon after allegedly attacking his 22 weeks' pregnant partner while she was cleaning the bathroom that morning.

A police statement said the woman had a bruised cheek and bleeding left knuckles when officers arrived at the home about 8.10am.

She accused her partner of rushing towards her and pushing her into the hallway, causing her to fall onto her back.

After he allegedly blocked access to the laundry, his partner told police she ran into the lounge room but was chased and punched in the face.

The man allegedly grabbed a mobile phone she was holding and threw it onto a table, causing it to break, and his partner accused him of hitting her with a metal baseball bat while she was on the ground.

The woman eventually managed to call triple-zero, after which the defendant left the house.

Paramedics assessed the woman at the scene and decided she didn't need to be taken to hospital.

Police found the man at a Gordon house about 5pm and arrested him, taking him to Tuggeranong police station, where he denied punching his partner or hitting her with a baseball bat.

He was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of property damage and applied for bail in the ACT Magistrates Court on Saturday morning.

Prosecutor David Sann opposed bail, describing the DPP case as strong and noting his partner feared for her safety.

The defence said the defendant had no history of family violence and had been suffering from mental-health problems since a previous break-up.

Magistrate Bernadette Boss refused bail and remanded the man to reappear in the court on November 22.

He is yet to enter a plea.
