Channel 10 has announced that hit Asher Keddie dramedy Offspring will be back for a seventh season

IT’S official, Offspring will be back in 2017.

After months of speculation, Ten have finally revealed that the dramedy will return for its seventh season next year

The show, which stars Asher Keddie as obstetrician Nina Proudman, has been a ratings hit for Ten since it returned from a two-year break.

Offspring has averaged just over 1 million viewers (consolidated) per episode and so Ten has been quick to commission another 10 episodes.

“We’re thrilled that Asher and the team are coming back and our intention is to bring back as many of the main cast as possible, ” Ten program chief Beverley McGarvey says.

“We’ve already got some scripts together for the early episodes. There are stories for everybody.”

Season six of Offspring ended with the scattering of patriarch Darcy Proudman’s (John Waters) ashes.

Nina rejected the idea of having another baby using dead partner Dr Patrick Reid’s (Matthew Le Nevez) sperm.

Instead, Nina is pushing forward with a new relationship with public relations fixer Harry Crewe (Alexander England). That relationship looks set to continue in season seven.

“As always, it’s great to be back for another season of Offspring,” Keddie says. “It’s the gift that keeps on giving, and I’m looking forward to the madness of it all once again.”

Season six ended with plenty of other cliffhangers to keep viewers watching. Jimmy and Zara Proudman (Richard Davies and Jane Harber) are trying to patch up their marriage after infidelity.

Billie has been playing cupid for Will Bowen (TJ Power) and Kerry Green (Ash Ricardo).

Newlyweds Cherie Butterfield (Deborah Mailman) and Martin Clegg (Lachy Hulme) look set to leave St Francis to work in the outback.

“We’re really happy with the numbers,” McGarvey says.

“It was off air for nearly two years and during that time viewers’ habits have shifted dramatically so for the season average to come in at over 1 million (is fantastic). It is the number one drama in Under 55s.”

The Offspring announcement comes on the eve of Ten’s rollout of its full program schedule for next year on Friday morning.

Ten has already revealed that it will be screening a new version of Aussie outback thriller Wake in Fright and is bringing back weight loss program The Biggest Loser in a new format.
