Travel + Leisure have released the World’s Best Awards for 2016 asking readers to rate the top travel destinations and companies around the world.

Australia made the cut in a few of its top lists including Sydney who took out top spot for the best city in the Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific region. But it’s the more suprising destinations that are standouts this year, as today’s traveller looks for experiences outside of traditional travel destinations.

Best hotel in the world: Nihiwatu, Sumba, Indonesia

This year’s list features many remote properties, including fishing retreats, adventure lodges and expedition stays, a testament to today’s intrepid traveller.

The Indonesian surf retreat Nihiwatu took first place and was credited for its strong local connection. Sitting on one of the greatest surf breaks, it takes its inspiration from traditional Sumbanese homes and its dining focuses on local seafood.

The Spectator in Charleston, South Carolina took second place, followed by Huka Lodge in Taupo, New Zealand and Australia’s Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island tied in fourth place with Montage Kapalua Bay, Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii
