The Battle of Karbala took place on Muharram 10, in the year 61 AH of the Islamic calendar (October 10, 680 AD) in Karbala, in present-day Iraq. The battle took place between a small group of supporters and relatives of Muhammad's grandson, Husayn ibn Ali, and a larger military detachment from the forces of Yazid I, the Umayyad caliph.
When Muawiyah I died in 680, Husayn did not give allegiance to his son, Yazid I, who had been appointed as Umayyad caliph by Muawiyah, and considered this action as the breach of the Hasan–Muawiya treaty. The people of Kufa sent letters to Husayn, asking his help and pledging their allegiance to him, but they did not support him later. As Husayn traveled towards Kufa, a nearby place known as Karbala, his caravan was intercepted by Yazid I's army. He was killed and beheaded in the Battle of Karbala by Shimr Ibn Thil-Jawshan, along with most of his family and companions, including Husayn's six-month-old infant son, Ali al-Asghar ibn Husayn, with the women and children taken as prisoners.
Karbala (Arabic: كربلاء; Karbalā’; also referred to as Karbalā' al-Muqaddasah) is a city in Iraq, located about 100 km (62 mi) southwest of Baghdad. Karbala is the capital of Karbala Governorate, and has an estimated population of 572,300 people (2003).
The city, best known as the location of the Battle of Karbala (680), is the holiest city for Shia Muslims after Mecca, Medina and the noble sanctuary in Jerusalem. It is home to the Imam Hussein Shrine. Karbala is famous as the site of the martyrdom of Hussein ibn Ali (Imam Husayn), and commemorations are held by millions of Shias annually to remember it. Karbala is considered sacred by Shias and rivals Mecca as a place of pilgrimage.
Several theories address the origin of the name Karbala. The geographer Yaqut al-Hamawi expressed the traditional hypothesis: that the name is an alternate Arabic feminine version of karbalah "soft earth". Alternatively, it has been said to be derived from the Aramaic word Kora, meaning place for making bricks, for the nearby ancient city of Babil, hence Karbabil, which became Karbala by contraction. According to Shia belief, the archangel Gabriel narrated the true meaning of the name Karbalā to Muhammad: the land which will cause many agonies (karb) and afflictions (balā)."

Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar, is a time of mourning for many Muslims worldwide. On the tenth day of the month, zealous, mostly Shi'ite followers show remembrance for the Battle of Karbala and the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the prophet Muhammed, by cutting and whipping themselves. This video gives a brief look at the solemn observances in Mumbai, India. Warning: this video contains violence and images some viewers will find objectionable. An excellent short video on the significance of Azadari or mourning for the martyrs of Karbala and tyranny against the progeny of Prophet Mohammad (SAAS). It is highly informative video and contains many answers about why Shia communities throughout the world commemorate the events of the tragedy of Karbala? What is the background of mourning, and the history of crying, and matam or "self-flagellation" in the form of striking one's face and chest, or using chains and blades in matam. It takes the viewer through different stages of the commemoration of tragic events and ends beautifully with the couplet that "In the Murder of Hussain, Indeed is the death of Yazid; Thus Karbala has revived Islam".
Ashura in Tehran Iran 2015 - عاشوراء في طهران | عاشورا در تهران ايران Ashura in Iran The Day of Ashura (Arabic: عاشوراء; Persian: عاشورا ; English: Day of Remembrance) is on the tenth day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar and marks the climax of the Remembrance of Muharram. Shiite commemorations of the Day of Ashura have traditionally included rituals which have been condemned by many Shia religious authorities recently under the claim that such practices are wrong or unislamic. This day is celebrated by Sunni Muslims (who refer to it as The Day of Atonement) as the day on which the Israelites were freed from the Pharaoh (called 'Firaun' in Arabic) of Egypt. However, Shi'a Muslims reject these stories and maintain that Ashura is a day of great sorrow due to the tragic events of Karbal...
