Zoroastrianism is a religion founded in ancient times by the prophet Zarathushtra, known to the Greeks as Zoroaster.
Zoroastrianism was the dominant world religion during the Persian empires (559 BC to 651 AC), and was thus the most powerful world religion at the time of Jesus. It had a major influence on other religions. It is still practiced world-wide, especially in Iran and India.
To quote Mary Boyce, "The prophet Zarathushtra, son of Pourushaspa, of the Spitaman family, is known to us primarily from the Gathas, seventeen great hymns which he composed and which have been faithfully preserved by his community. These are not works of instruction, but inspired, passionate utterances, many of them addressed directly to God; and their poetic form is a very ancient one, which has been traced back (through Norse parallels) to Indo-European times. It seems to have been linked with a mantic tradition, that is, to have been cultivated by priestly seers who sought to express in lofty words their personal apprehension of the divine; and it is marked by subtleties of allusion, and great richness and complexity of style. Such poetry can only have been fully understood by the learned; and since Zoroaster believed that he had been entrusted by God with a message for all mankind, he must also have preached again and again in plain words to ordinary people. His teachings were handed down orally in his community from generation to generation, and were at last committed to writing under the Sasanians, rulers of the third Iranian empire. God: Ahura Mazda The supreme being is called Ahura Mazda (Phl. Ohrmazd), meaning "Wise Lord." Ahura Mazda is all good, and created the world and all good things, including people. He is opposed by Anghra Mainyu (Phl. Ahriman), meaning "Destructive Spirit," the embodiment of evil and creator of all evil things. The cosmic battle between good and evil will ultimately lead to the destruction of all evil.
Prophet: Zarathushtra The religion was founded by Zarathushtra. His date is uncertain, but is probably somewhere around 1200 BC. He lived and preached in the Inner Asian steppes. Zarathushtra received his revelations directly from Ahura Mazda, and from his Archangels (Amesha Spentas).
Scripture: Avesta The central scripture is the Avesta. The most sacred sections of the Avesta are the Gathas or Hymns of Zarathushtra; they are also the most enigmatic. Later sacred literature includes the Pahlavi Texts, which contain extensive quotations and paraphrases from lost Avesta texts.
Creed The creed is summarized in Yasna 12. It is likely to have been composed by Zarathushtra himself, and to have been used as an avowal of faith by early converts (Cf. Boyce, Zoroastrianism, Its Antiquity and Constant Vigour, p. 102-4).
Observances Two sacred garments, the sudreh (shirt) and kusti (cord) are the emblems of the religion. Zoroastrians perform a short cleansing ritual (Padyab), and retie the kusti several times a day with another short ritual (Nirang-i Kusti) as a sign of their faith. Other prayers are recited daily from the Khorda Avesta. Prayer is largely done in the Avestan language. The faithful should also participate in seasonal communal festivals ("Gahambars") during the year.
Fire and "Asha" Fire, as a symbol of "Asha" and the "original light of God," holds a special place of esteem in the religion. Prayer is often done in front of a fire, and consecrated fires are kept perpetually burning in the major temples.

Here, from the Hanging Gardens of Mumbai (built over the city's main reservoir on Malabar Hill), you can see the vultures circling the Towers of Silence that are located close by in the adjacent forested area.
Orthodox followers of the ancient Zoroastrian religion believe that their bodies should not pollute the elements, so upon death they place their bodies on the platforms in the Towers of Silence to be consumed by nature (usually vultures). Though they are tucked away in a small forested area amidst some of Mumbai's most prime real estate, actually visiting these towers is totally prohibited on religious grounds --but from this adjacent location you can see from the vulture's activity that there are ceremonies happening that day. There's a tower perfectly lined up with this pathway where I was standing.
Zoroastrianism, one of the oldest Western religions, started in ancient Persia and was eventually pushed east by the rise of Islam. When they arrived and settled in Mumbai, they became known as the Parsi. The Parsi were never in any big numbers (and they're dwindling now), but they've always been some of the most successful businesspeople in India --most notably the Tata family (and even Freddie Mercury).

'The Towers of Silence' centers around the everyday life of Dinshah Magol as he moves between the two very different worlds of religious and modern, secular life. We follow him as he matures in the religious and secular schools and prepares to finally undertake his first priestly ritual. There are only two religious schools for priests left in the world, with a total of twenty-six students. We capture Dinshah at his religious school in Dadar, Bombay. We see him and his classmates wake in the yawning spaciousness of a dorm room built for a much larger occupancy; we listen to the lonely echo of footsteps as he moves down the school’s eerily empty corridors, and experience his moments of excitement and drudgery while he studies for religious exams, memorizing lengthy passages written in a four thousand year old language.

Tower of Silence
A Tower of Silence is a circular, raised structure used by Zoroastrians for exposure of the dead, particularly to scavenging birds for the purposes of excarnation.
Zoroastrian exposure of the dead is first attested in the mid-5th century BCE Histories of Herodotus, but the use of towers is first documented in the early 9th century. The doctrinal rationale for exposure is to avoid contact with earth or fire, both of which are considered sacred.
One of the earliest literary descriptions of such a building appears in the late 9th-century Epistles of Manushchihr, where the technical term is astodan, "ossuary". Another technical term that appears in the 9th/10th-century texts of Zoroastrian tradition (the so-called Pahlavi books) is dakhmag, for any place for the dead. This Zoroastrian Middle Persian term is a borrowing from Avestan dakhma, of uncertain meaning but related to interment and commonly translated as "grave". In the Avesta, the term is pejorative and does not signify a construction of any kind. In the Iranian provinces of Yazd and Kerman, dakhma continues as deme or dema. Yet another term that appears in the 9th/10th-century texts is dagdah, "prescribed place". The word also appears in later Zoroastrian texts of both India and Iran, but in 20th-century India came to signify the lowest grade of temple fire. In India the term doongerwadi came into use after a tower of silence was constructed on a hill of that name.

'The Towers of Silence' centers around the everyday life of Dinshah Magol as he moves between the two very different worlds of religious and modern, secular life. We follow him as he matures in the religious and secular schools and prepares to finally undertake his first priestly ritual. There are only two religious schools for priests left in the world, with a total of twenty-six students. We capture Dinshah at his religious school in Dadar, Bombay. We see him and his classmates wake in the yawning spaciousness of a dorm room built for a much larger occupancy; we listen to the lonely echo of footsteps as he moves down the school’s eerily empty corridors, and experience his moments of excitement and drudgery while he studies for religious exams, memorizing lengthy passages written in a four thousand year old language. Vultures circling over Mumbai's Towers of Silence
Here, from the Hanging Gardens of Mumbai (built over the city's main reservoir on Malabar Hill), you can see the vultures circling the Towers of Silence that are located close by in the adjacent forested area. Orthodox followers of the ancient Zoroastrian religion believe that their bodies should not pollute the elements, so upon death they place their bodies on the platforms in the Towers of Silence to be consumed by nature (usually vultures). Though they are tucked away in a small forested area amidst some of Mumbai's most prime real estate, actually visiting these towers is totally prohibited on religious grounds --but from this adjacent location you can see from the vulture's activity that there are ceremonies happening that day. Zoroastrianism is a religion founded in ancient times by the prophet Zarathushtra, known to the Greeks as Zoroaster.
Zoroastrianism was the dominant world religion during the Persian empires (559 BC to 651 AC), and was thus the most powerful world religion at the time of Jesus. It had a major influence on other religions. It is still practiced world-wide, especially in Iran and India.
To quote Mary Boyce, "The prophet Zarathushtra, son of Pourushaspa, of the Spitaman family, is known to us primarily from the Gathas, seventeen great hymns which he composed and which have been faithfully preserved by his community. These are not works of instruction, but inspired, passionate utterances, many of them addressed directly to God; and their poetic form is a very ancient one, which has been traced back (through Norse parallels) to Indo-European times. It seems to have been linked with a mantic tradition, that is, to have been cultivated by priestly seers who sought to express in lofty words their personal apprehension of the divine; and it is marked by subtleties of allusion, and great richness and complexity of style. Such poetry can only have been fully understood by the learned; and since Zoroaster believed that he had been entrusted by God with a message for all mankind, he must also have preached again and again in plain words to ordinary people. His teachings were handed down orally in his community from generation to generation, and were at last committed to writing under the Sasanians, rulers of the third Iranian empire. Some of the major tenets of Zoroastrianism include:
God: Ahura Mazda The supreme being is called Ahura Mazda (Phl. Ohrmazd), meaning "Wise Lord." Ahura Mazda is all good, and created the world and all good things, including people. He is opposed by Anghra Mainyu (Phl. Ahriman), meaning "Destructive Spirit," the embodiment of evil and creator of all evil things. The cosmic battle between good and evil will ultimately lead to the destruction of all evil.
Prophet: Zarathushtra The religion was founded by Zarathushtra. His date is uncertain, but is probably somewhere around 1200 BC. He lived and preached in the Inner Asian steppes. Zarathushtra received his revelations directly from Ahura Mazda, and from his Archangels (Amesha Spentas).
Scripture: Avesta The central scripture is the Avesta. The most sacred sections of the Avesta are the Gathas or Hymns of Zarathushtra; they are also the most enigmatic. Later sacred literature includes the Pahlavi Texts, which contain extensive quotations and paraphrases from lost Avesta texts.
Creed The creed is summarized in Yasna 12. It is likely to have been composed by Zarathushtra himself, and to have been used as an avowal of faith by early converts (Cf. Boyce, Zoroastrianism, Its Antiquity and Constant Vigour, p. 102-4).
Observances Two sacred garments, the sudreh (shirt) and kusti (cord) are the emblems of the religion. Zoroastrians perform a short cleansing ritual (Padyab), and retie the kusti several times a day with another short ritual (Nirang-i Kusti) as a sign of their faith. Other prayers are recited daily from the Khorda Avesta. Prayer is largely done in the Avestan language. The faithful should also participate in seasonal communal festivals ("Gahambars") during the year.
Fire and "Asha" Fire, as a symbol of "Asha" and the "original light of God," holds a special place of esteem in the religion. Prayer is often done in front of a fire, and consecrated fires are kept perpetually burning in the major temples.

The Parsi were never in any big numbers (and they're dwindling now), but they've always been some of the most successful businesspeople in India --most notably the Tata family (and even Freddie Mercury).

Zoroastrianism is a religion founded in ancient times by the prophet Zarathushtra, known to the Greeks as Zoroaster.
Zoroastrianism was the dominant world religion during the Persian empires (559 BC to 651 AC), and was thus the most powerful world religion at the time of Jesus. It had a major influence on other religions. It is still practiced world-wide, especially in Iran and India.
To quote Mary Boyce, "The prophet Zarathushtra, son of Pourushaspa, of the Spitaman family, is known to us primarily from the Gathas, seventeen great hymns which he composed and which have been faithfully preserved by his community. These are not works of instruction, but inspired, passionate utterances, many of them addressed directly to God; and their poetic form is a very ancient one, which has been traced back (through Norse parallels) to Indo-European times. It seems to have been linked with a mantic tradition, that is, to have been cultivated by priestly seers who sought to express in lofty words their personal apprehension of the divine; and it is marked by subtleties of allusion, and great richness and complexity of style. Such poetry can only have been fully understood by the learned; and since Zoroaster believed that he had been entrusted by God with a message for all mankind, he must also have preached again and again in plain words to ordinary people. His teachings were handed down orally in his community from generation to generation, and were at last committed to writing under the Sasanians, rulers of the third Iranian empire. The language then spoken was Middle Persian, also called Pahlavi; and the Pahlavi books provide invaluable keys for interpreting the magnificent obscurities of the Gathas themselves." - Zoroastrians, Their religious beliefs and practices, London, 1979, pg 17.
Some of the major tenets of Zoroastrianism include:
God: Ahura Mazda The supreme being is called Ahura Mazda (Phl. Ohrmazd), meaning "Wise Lord." Ahura Mazda is all good, and created the world and all good things, including people. He is opposed by Anghra Mainyu (Phl. Ahriman), meaning "Destructive Spirit," the embodiment of evil and creator of all evil things. The cosmic battle between good and evil will ultimately lead to the destruction of all evil.
Prophet: Zarathushtra The religion was founded by Zarathushtra. His date is uncertain, but is probably somewhere around 1200 BC. He lived and preached in the Inner Asian steppes. Zarathushtra received his revelations directly from Ahura Mazda, and from his Archangels (Amesha Spentas).
Scripture: Avesta The central scripture is the Avesta. The most sacred sections of the Avesta are the Gathas or Hymns of Zarathushtra; they are also the most enigmatic. Later sacred literature includes the Pahlavi Texts, which contain extensive quotations and paraphrases from lost Avesta texts.
Creed The creed is summarized in Yasna 12. It is likely to have been composed by Zarathushtra himself, and to have been used as an avowal of faith by early converts (Cf. Boyce, Zoroastrianism, Its Antiquity and Constant Vigour, p. 102-4).
Observances Two sacred garments, the sudreh (shirt) and kusti (cord) are the emblems of the religion. Zoroastrians perform a short cleansing ritual (Padyab), and retie the kusti several times a day with another short ritual (Nirang-i Kusti) as a sign of their faith. Other prayers are recited daily from the Khorda Avesta. Prayer is largely done in the Avestan language. The faithful should also participate in seasonal communal festivals ("Gahambars") during the year.
Fire and "Asha" Fire, as a symbol of "Asha" and the "original light of God," holds a special place of esteem in the religion. Prayer is often done in front of a fire, and consecrated fires are kept perpetually burning in the major temples.

We follow him as he matures in the religious and secular schools and prepares to finally undertake his first priestly ritual. There are only two religious schools for priests left in the world, with a total of twenty-six students. We capture Dinshah at his religious school in Dadar, Bombay. We see him and his classmates wake in the yawning spaciousness of a dorm room built for a much larger occupancy; we listen to the lonely echo of footsteps as he moves down the school’s eerily empty corridors, and experience his moments of excitement and drudgery while he studies for religious exams, memorizing lengthy passages written in a four thousand year old language.

7. Willowbrook State Insane Asylum
This Insane Asylum on Staten Island, New York was extremely overcrowded with people who had severe mental disorders. Anyone in New York at that time with a mental or physical mutation were locked up here. When a surprise documentary was displayed on national television, many people were appalled by the conditions. Many children were smeared with their own feces, no lights were on and everyone were using flashlights. This caused the facility to close its doors. But where did everyone go? Many say that once this happened, children in Staten Island were kidnapped by the insane who once lived here then taken back to the abandoned Willowbrook. Rumors of ghosts or boogey men are still reported at this location.
6. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
Gettysburg is possibly one of the most haunted places in the USA. During 3 days of brutal fighting that left more than 7,800 soldiers and over 10,000 extremely wounded. With all the unnecessary loss of life, there’s no surprise that ghosts are commonly spotted. Tourists have recorded voices and snapped photos of wandering spirits who died on this battlefield. Unexplained flashing lights and white figures in Civil War uniforms are caught on camera, letting you decide for yourself. It’s still best to avoid this place as much as possible.
5. Houska Castle, Czech Republic
A castle in Czech Republic allegedly covers a pit that leads to directly to the gates of hell. King Ottokar from the 1200’s offered to excuse anyone from their crimes if they agreed to be lowered into the pit. The first one to offer, let out a panick stricken scream, begging for mercy. Apparently, when had been brought the to surface, he completely lost his mind. Disfigured ghosts and even a human frog hybrid were believed to have been seen here. Adolph Hitler had believed the claims and instructed scientists to explore. It’s best just to stay away.
4. Iolani Palace, Hawaii
Hawaii is a beautiful chain of islands but its history has left mana-- or spirits of lives to roam our favorite ocean state. Ancient Hawaiians still haunt their former home. Once the home of the royal rulers of Hawaii, this palace is now haunted. The palace is home the tombs of several chiefs of the islands. A former queen of the palace is said to haunt this location. She was a fan of smoking cigars and workers there would notice how it mysteriously gets smokey. Sounds of footsteps creep out tourists. Who would want to leave this paradise? Not the spirits, at least.

You won’t hear any noise here at the tower of silence, unless of course, it’s a ghost! It’s a Zoroastrian tradition, in India, to leave dead bodies on top of a tower to allow birds and even dogs to eat their dead bodies. This civilization believed that corpses were filled with evil spirits once they died. Only exposure to birds and sunlight will purify them. Once this happened the bodies were embalmed then thrown into the circle of the pit. This practice, for the most part, isn’t still practiced but some places in India still do. That still doesn’t mean the spirits of the dead aren’t roaming around.
2. Lizzie Borden House, Massachusetts
One of the most gruesome crime scenes in the United States is now home to a haunted place you want to avoid. August 4, 1892 Andrew and Abby Borden were found viciously murdered with an ax. Lizzie was eventually acquitted for the crimes and continued to live in the same town. Various owners of the house have claimed serious paranormal activity. Some claim to hear screams coming from upstairs where Abby Borden was killed. For the right price, you can spend the night here, but it doesn’t mean you should.

Sarah Winchester had a lot of money after her husband, the creator of the Winchester repeating rifle, passed away. Sarah had visited a psychic who claimed that she would be haunted by all the lives who were killed by her husband’s death device. Sarah believed the only way to escape all the spirits was to move west to California. Her 20 million dollar inheritance (a lot at that time in 1884) was enough to built her one of the most outlandish mansions to this day. The spirits consulted her on how to build the house. Her favorite number was 13 and you’ll notice this throughout the design. Stairs that lead to ceilings, bathrooms inside of bathrooms and were made to confuse her demon attackers. Many believe this house is still haunted by Sarah and the victims from the Winchester rifle.

The Towers of Silence are the burial mounds of the Zoroastrian (Parsi) religion. According to this most ancient religion's precepts about purity, bodies are left on them to decompose or be picked at by vultures after a series of elaborate rituals.
There are no absolute parallels between my piece and these structures, just some poetic ideas and resonances: I wanted to create a piece that was constantly transforming itself, not just in terms of the notes and their patterns, but the actual sounds made from the instrument (many of them are unusual and provide an aural and visual/dramatic journey.)
When Mary Dullea commissioned the piece she specifically wanted to have a piece that "extended the piano" so this seemed a perfect opportunity to try and realise these aims.
The five movements each emerge from one another: after the percussive prelude and frenzy of the first two movements, via a lullaby (sleep now) there is increasing stasis and slower activity. And ever more silence.

There’s hardly any stores in that area after all the towers are built. The market is too expensive for everyday shopping. Stores should be close enough to be a walking distance, not 10 to 15 minutes to walk to the store and 10 to 15 minutes back to the towers ... ....
