Benefit for Antifascist Action Kavala (Greece)

ANTIFA DIKH 14 NOE 2016 ENGMonday November 21st 2016, Benefit for Antifascist Action Kavala (Greece). Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm. Show with Ronley Teper (guitar and voice), Pit Hermans (cymbala and percussion) and Tim Postage (banjo). Music from 9pm till 10pm.

NO PROSECUTION AGAINST THE TWO ANTIFASCISTS OF KAVALA
The so-called Imia crisis, which took place in 1996, served the fascist para-state that for years has been exploiting this particular incident, setting up celebrations of hate. Since 2011 the Patriotic Movement of Kavala, similar to the nazist gang of the Golden Dawn, organizes annually a nationwide call to the town. A failed fascist fest, which deflates year by year, like the ‘famous’ national sentiment of the fascists.
One day before the fascist gathering on 26/01/2014 and after a clash had taken place between fascists and a group of people, the contemporary nazi-collaborators of Kavala broke the store-front of the store that belongs to a comrade of ours, targeted for his antifascist action and they then attempted to set fire in its interior, thereby endangering the lives of the building’s occupants.
Our comrade is compelled to get to the local police department, as arson attempt is a prosecutable ex-officio criminal offense (therefore some formalities were required by him) and after a 3-hour wait, he finds out he is arrested because members of the patriotic movement had filed a lawsuit against him.
With one comrade already held in custody for two days after the ridiculous lawsuit against him by members of the patriotic movement, in the afternoon of Monday 27 January 2014, the second comrade (who is the brother of the first) -also targeted for his antifascist action- is informed that a lawsuit is pending against him as well by the same coward fascists, and he appears voluntarily at the police department of Kavala. Cops and fascists cooked up the case, resulting in our comrades being charged with criminal organization (gang), breach of the public peace (hood law), incitement to cause grievous bodily harm, aggravated damages, carrying and use of weapons, explosion and possession of explosive bombs.
On Friday, 31/01/2014, after appearing before an investigating judge and a prosecutor, our two comrades were released on the following bail conditions: they are banned from leaving the country, they have to appear at the local police department each month and were obliged to pay a financial guarantee. The first trial, which was set for the 10/06/2015, was postponed due to the absence of their defending lawyers, while the next ones were postponed due to the nationwide lawyers’ strike. Show with Ronley Teper, Pit Hermans and Tim Postage

Ronley_Teper_fall_tour_2016Monday November 21st 2016, Show with Ronley Teper (guitar and voice), Pit Hermans (cymbala and percussion) and Tim Postage (banjo). Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm. Music from 9pm till 10pm.

In August 2016, Ronley Teper performed an hilarious set with Pit Hermans at Joe’s garage. Great sense of humor and improvisation on stage. A few days later, she was telling about her plans in an interview: I’m checking out the scenes, making new friends and contacts, picking up last minute shows, i’m writing like a fiend and meeting improvisers from all over and starting to make the Lipliners a more international project. The idea is to have musicians from different countries joining me when i play in different countries. Right now i’m in Amsterdam, and have my second show here next week with Pit Hermans a multi instrumentalist from Amsterdam. I’ve got a show in Prague supporting Mark Steiner a great eclectic songwriter based out of Norway in early September, and will be on tour from the middle of November for two weeks with shows tba, touring with Pavel Cingl a violinist and producer from Prague. Some other guests will join as we get closer to the tour like Tim Postage – guitarist & banjo. We’ll be back in Toronto and parts of Ontario for a couple of weeks in December for some full on Lipliners stuff as well. From there we will have to see what happens.

A musical sub-culture, a music of the lower classes.
“The womb of rebetiko was the jail and the hash den. It was there that the early rebetes created their songs. They sang in quiet, harsh voices, unforced, one after the other, each singer adding a verse which often bore no relation to the previous verse, and a song often went on for hours. There was no refrain, and the melody was simple and easy.” Ilias Petropoulos
.
‘Rebet guitar’, focuses on the early rebetiko songs based on the US recordings from 1917 till the 40’s with one guitar, finger-pick style.
‘Rebet guitarS’, a guitar duo, will present the recordings from 1930-1940.

Can Dialectics Break Bricks Cinema: Fuckoffguysgoodday (1992)

fuck_off_guysSunday November 13th 2016, Can Dialectics Break Bricks Cinema: Fuckoffguysgoodday (1992).
(Dědictví aneb Kurvahošigutntág). Directed by Věra Chytilová, 120 minutes, In Czech with English subtitles. Door opens at 8pm, film begin at 9pm. Free admission.

After the so-called velvet revolution, when Czechoslovakia made a transition from Communism to American-style capitalism, many of the rebellious filmmakers who had caused a stir under the old regime became softies and lost all of their critical edge. But two directors didn’t… Věra Chytilová (Daisies) and the animator Jan Švankmajer.

This was Věra Chytilová’s first film after the revolution and its a sharp critique of the blossoming of consumer capitalism. In this film the wild actor Bolek Polívka portrays a young Moravian villager who suddenly becomes a millionaire overnight from a mysterious inheritance. He’s brilliant in the role. In this black comedy we watch as he is transformed from a lazy countryside simpleton into an outright asshole because of his newly acquired wealth and power.

Fuckoffguysgoodday was received with a storm and has remained one of the most popular Czech comedies of all time. It was able to dig deep down and touch the poetic Czech soul, and many people still recite lines from it 20 years later. A fantastic dark comedy, with a biting message that is more important today than ever. It has basically never been shown in the west, so this is yet another extraordinarily rare screening!

Movie night: Los Viajes del Viento (2009)

Los Viajes del Viento (The Wind Journeys), written and directed by young Colombian director Ciro Guerra (1981), it’s a donkey road movie where music and folk traditions show the rugged majesty of the Colombian Caribbean landscape. Ignacio Carrillo, a famous juggler, (traveling musician) whose accordion is rumored to have belonged to the devil, is making a long journey to return the instrument to his master. A young man named Fermin, who admires Ignacio and wishes to become a juggler like him, chases after him and asks Ignacio to teach him to play. Ignacio refuses, but Fermin follows anyway. The pair travels across fields, plains, deserts, mountains, and water. The music (vallenato) is what drives the characters from stop to stop along the journey.
In this film, Ciro Guerra makes an attempt to capture the magic of unknown areas of the Colombia countryside. He has created pure filmic poetry through the characters discovering, rediscovering and embracing various cultural sights and sounds of the region.

Housing for All is a recent movement in Cologne that suggests practical ways of re-appropriating real estate properties in word and action. We are happy to visit our friends at Joe’s and meeting people from KoZe as well! Looking forward to it 🙂

Movie night: The Last Supper (1976)

The_Last_SupperSunday October 23rd 2016, The Last Supper. Directed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, 1976. 120 minutes. In Spanish with English subtitles. Film starts at 21:00. Free admission

The past might have a way to help make sense about understanding the present and the future. The Last Supper is a film that does this. If you want to understand why total insurrection against prison society, industrialism and the state is not to be seen in the immediate future, this film can provide some anecdotal understandings. Likewise, a close and inquisitive eye might see affinity between a slave plantation and society/state, even locate yourself or how you want to be on the plantation, which might mean reflecting on your everyday choices. Besides highly recommending this film to all to see, even if it might not be for you, the one hint I give the viewer is to watch and listen closely to the conversations and dialogues at the dinner table.
The film tells the story of a pious plantation owner during Cuba’s Spanish colonial period. The plantation owner decides to recreate the Biblical Last Supper using twelve of the slaves working in his sugarcane fields, hoping to thus teach the slaves about Christianity. […Lees verder]
