Ranier, Minnesota

Ranier is a city in Koochiching County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 145 at the 2010 census.

Ranier is located east of the city of International Falls, along State Highway 11 (MN 11). Fort Frances, Ontario is located directly across the river.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.14 square miles (0.36 km²), all of it land.

The Rainy River and Rainy Lake meet at Ranier.

Demographics

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 145 people, 70 households, and 40 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,035.7 inhabitants per square mile (399.9/km²). There were 89 housing units at an average density of 635.7 per square mile (245.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.6% White, 0.7% Asian, and 0.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.4% of the population.

There were 70 households of which 14.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.7% were married couples living together, 4.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 7.1% had a male householder with no wife present, and 42.9% were non-families. 38.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 10% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.83 and the average family size was 2.38.

Marcelo Coelho

Marcelo Coelho is a Brazilian computation artist and designer. His work focuses on the boundaries between matter and computation, and includes interactive installations, photography, wearables, and robotics. Coelho is currently a Research Affiliate at the MIT Media Lab and creative director at Marcelo Coelho Studio, an anti-disciplinary studio dedicated to technically innovative and experimental work based in Boston, MA.

Marcelo Coelho graduated from Concordia University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design and Computation Arts, and received a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy from the MIT Media Lab.

Works

Coelho makes objects, installations, and live experiences that challenges people's perception of material properties and behaviors. Many of his works use techniques and concepts from composites, digital fabrication and programmable matter.

Six-Forty by Four-Eighty, a 2010 installation by Coelho, uses interactive physical pixels and body communication to convey an immersive digital graffiti experience.
