ALEPPO, SYRIA | What's It Like to Be a Tourist in ALEPPO?
Travelling to Aleppo was one of the toughest travel experiences I've had. The city and the people who call it home have gone through a nightmare in recent years.
I'm very lucky to have been able to visit Aleppo as an independent, foreign traveller and I hope that this video can convey some of what I experienced there, from my personal perspective.
Please note: this vlog documents my personal trip to Syria, as a tourist. It is not necessarily a travel recommendation, nor a commentary on the political climate, nor an attempt to show the ordinary life of Syrian citizens.
Thank you for watching! If you liked this vlog, come follow me on Instagram for daily updates from destinations that most other tourists don't go to:

The fall of Aleppo, explained
How a modern-day massacre happened — and why America sat on the sidelines.
In December, after an extended siege and a month of intense fighting, Bashar al-Assad’s forces seized control of the rebel-held eastern half of Aleppo. A withdrawal agreement allowed thousands of rebels and civilians to evacuate — but not before Assad’s forces massacred and tortured an unknown number of people. The Assad victory was a humanitarian disaster and a devastating blow to the embattled anti-government rebels — and something that was in the works for over a year. The above video explains why.

A City Left in Ruins: The Battle for Aleppo
Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News
Until the civil war reached it two years ago, Aleppo was Syria's largest city and the country's commercial and industrial hub. Now the ancient city lies in ruins, 70 percent of its population has fled, and those who remain live under siege. Rebel-held areas are under constant bombardment by barrel bombs — crudely improvised explosive devices that are dropped from government aircraft.
As rebel and government forces struggle for total victory, VICE filmmaker Medyan Dairieh followed the volunteers of Aleppo's Civil Defense, a civilian rescue organization, who risk their lives daily as the first responders to government airstrikes in a city seemingly abandoned by the outside world.

Ancient City of Aleppo (UNESCO/NHK)
Located at the crossroads of several trade routes from the 2nd millennium B.C., Aleppo was ruled successively by the Hittites, Assyrians, Arabs, Mongols, Mamelukes and Ottomans. The 13th-century citadel, 12th-century Great Mosque and various 17th-century madrasas, palaces, caravanserais and hammams all form part of the city's cohesive, unique urban fabric, now threatened by overpopulation.

This was the hardest video I've ever made.
I've spent the last 2 days in the Northern Syrian city of Aleppo, which was once a hotspot on the ancient Silk Road and the economic and cultural capital of Syria... until the war destroyed this city into pieces beginning in 2012.
Literally, as I walked around Aleppo, I have never seen so much destruction in my entire life. Schools, hospitals, apartment complexes, parks, markets are left in ruins. It has been really hard to witness.
BUT, reconstruction of Aleppo is now in full swing, and that's what I have decided to focus on in this video. The markets are coming back to life, the street vendors are out, and shop owners are remodeling their stores to how they used to be a decade ago. Have I mentioned that Aleppo cuisine is considered the best in Syria (and trust me, it's the truth!)
Also -- the Aleppo Citadel (the oldest in the world) still remains in great shape and it was wonderful to explore, and see the 360 degree view of the city from the top.
If you enjoyed this video, I encourage you to share it with your friends and family. Get the word spread out that Syria is coming back, stronger than ever. More to come tomorrow!

Aleppo (x3)
Aleppo Living..
Those streets they look like a wasteland
I stop and wonder, do we even care?
They got no where to run home to, they got no one that they can call
Their world is broken, only God knows how they're coping
But we pretend that we can't see them
The world turns and our hearts get colder
What can I do I'm just a one man soldier?
Carry on watching TV on the sofa
Tell ourselves it'll soon be over
Cos we were supposed to be there for them
Lord, where did the Ummah go?
They were crying out there for us
But that's the life that they live their in Aleppo
Knee deep in Aleppo
Their sleeping in Aleppo..
Aleppo
Aleppo Living.. (x2)
I say these words so you can see, the Muslims dropped the ball.
Those were all of our family, but we didn't wanna know..
How dare we fight bout issues concerning you & me
Cos when that cookie crumbled, we had no unity
But we gotta be willing to change, cos lord knows this will happen on another day
Yes we gotta be willing to change, cos lord knows this will happen on another day
But what's a change gonna do if it's not today
When we ain't got time to stop and pray
Meanwhile another home got bombed today..
But that's the life that they live their in Aleppo
They're Knee deep in Aleppo
They're sleeping in Aleppo..
Aleppo (x2)
Gunshots every night in Aleppo
Another plane in the sky in Aleppo
Every day is a fight in Aleppo
Oh oh oh, Aleppo
Ya Allah send peace to Aleppo
Let everyone eat in Aleppo
We don't no screams from Aleppo
Oh oh oh, Aleppo living..

"It's 8:15 AM", says Touma, recording the morning sky and fading moon through his window, on a day that signalled a turning point for life in Syria's largest city. "Strangers take position in my street.” he says, “they look unprepared, without any kind of war experience". Young men in t-shirts, resembling students more than fighters, drag sandbags into a blockade below Touma's window. A rebel appeals by loudspeaker to a regime soldier, "leave your post and come to us!". He is answered by the sound of gunfire. Touma's raw commentary and eye for photographic detail give an unprecedented glimpse into the beginnings of a war that rages to this day.

Furthermore, our videos aim to demonstrate that no individual can be defined by just one aspect of their lives, but rather, that humans are complex, multifaceted beings that cannot fit into a simple stigma, no matter what that stigma might be.

The Hidden History Of The Albanians Part 2
#Illyrians #Illyria #Berber
The Hidden History of the Albanians part 2 continues further into in-depth examination of Albanian history. It covers the arrival of the corsair pirates who were Berbers of north Africa that settled around various places in Albania, Along with the arrival of Saracen Berbers from Lucera, Italy. These North African Berbers would contribute vastly to the ethnogenesis of today's Albanian nation especially through linguistics, culture, and genetics. The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces have confirmed to RT that thousands of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) terrorists and their family members were allowed to leave Raqqa, shortly before the city was fully recaptured. Ali Rizk, a contributor with the Al-Monitor news site, thinks the Americans were an integral part of a deal to see IS help form a buffer against Iran.

Abstract
This talk explores the Assyrian commercial archives from Kültepe near Kayseri as a single solid dataset documenting a high-intensity trans-regional commercial circuit just after 2000 BCE. It discusses its importance as evidence of an interlocking system of commercial networks forming a supra-regional, multi-centered and interdependent structure that connected communities across Eurasia during the earlier phases of the Bronze Age, c. 2500-1500 BCE. Alongside evidence drawn from the earlier and later records, it outlines the development of this exchange on a continental scale and frames it in terms of volume and intensity.

MEMS COLLOQUIUM LECTURE
Michael D. Danti, Assistant Professor of Archaeology, Boston University; Consulting Scholar, University of Pennsylvania Museum; and Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London
Syria and Iraq are facing the worst cultural heritage crisis since the Second World War. Michael Danti's talk will address one of the greatest challenges: the cultural cleansing perpetrated by the so-called Islamic State (or ISIS) and the work of the American Schools of Oriental Research to safeguard cultural assets.
The American Schools of Oriental Research Cultural Heritage Initiatives (ASOR CHI) work with Syrians and Iraqis to safeguard cultural sites and objects from neglect, damage, destruction, and theft as part of a program developed with the U.S. Department of State. Among the many atrocities perpetrated by ISIS is the deliberate destructions of historic mosques, churches, schools, monasteries, and cemeteries, as well as numerous famous monuments at archaeological sites such as Palmyra, Nimrud, Nineveh, Hatra, and the Old City of Mosul. ISIS brazenly commits these war crimes to advance its radical ideology and gain global media exposure. At the same time, the organization funds its terrorist activities through the looting of cultural property from archaeological sites, museums, libraries, and private collections. Irreplaceable ancient and medieval heritage, embedded in the urban fabric and daily life of modern communities, is endangered as extremists erase cultural memory, manipulate cultural identity, and eliminate cultural diversity.
Bio:
Michael D. Danti is an archaeologist who specializes in the ancient Near East. His interests center on the emergence of complex societies, agropastoral economies, tribe-state relations and pastoral nomadic societies. He directs archaeological projects in Iraqi Kurdistan and Syria, focusing on the Bronze and Iron Ages. From 1991 to 2010, Dr. Danti’s research focused on the Early Bronze Age site of Tell es-Sweyhat near Raqqa and Aleppo on the Euphrates River. He is a principal investigator for the American Schools of Oriental Research's Cultural Heritage Initiatives (ASOR CHI). ASOR is an international, collaborative effort to respond to the destruction of cultural heritage in Syria and northern Iraq. Groups of concerned citizens in Syria and Iraq have been taking action, and ASOR's international team has formed alliances and partnerships with these groups.

#Illyrians #Illyria #Berber
The Hidden History of the Albanians part 2 continues further into in-depth examination of Albanian history. It covers the arrival of the corsair pirates who were Berbers of north Africa that settled around various places in
Albania, Along with the arrival of Saracen Berbers from Lucera, Italy. These North African Berbers would contribute vastly to the ethnogenesis of today's Albanian nation especially through linguistics, culture, and genetics. This topic is something that has been covered very little in today’s mainstream Albanian history.
In 1205, Durres fell under the rule of the Republic of Venice and then the Duchy of Durazzo was founded. Meanwhile in Italy In 1224 however, Frederick II, responding to religious uprisings in Sicily, expelled all Muslim Berbers from the island, transferring many to the fortress of Lucera over the next two decades.
Not long after the death of Charles the 1st, The city of Lucera was sacked in 1300 by Catholic forces under the command of Charles II of Naples. The city's Muslim Berber inhabitants were exiled or sold into slavery, with many finding asylum in Albania across the Adriatic Sea. This introduced another wave of Berber-Arab migration in the land of Albania.
John VI Kantakouzenos, Greek nobleman, statesman, and general, stated that various migrants began to flood the region of Albania in the early 14th century, all originating from the port of Durres. This coincides with the fall of Lucera and the arrival of the Berber-Saracen refugees in the land of Albania.
Interestingly enough, Ottoman Traveller and Historian Evliya Celebi recording his commentary in his book of travels called Seyâhatnâme mentioned the franks. Travelling through southern Albania in 1670, Ottoman traveller Evliya Celebi (1611-1684) recounts the legend of the Arab sheikh Jabal-i Alhama, who fled to the mountains of Kurvelesh in Albania and died in Elbasan. According to Evliya, he is the father of some of these tribes of Albania. Evliya Celebi also stated that the Albanian language was formed through a mixture of Frankish-Arabic. The Frankish element would have been introduced earlier from the arrival of the Normans as well as the mercenaries of George Maniakes.
"Among the Albanians still persist the names Cabires and Mardaites, the Chaonians or Liap still call themselves Kurvelies, and the mountaineers of Scodra, Mirdites. As we shall see, the modern Kurvelies were also designated by the Byzantines under the name of the Mardaites."
Sathas, K.N. (1890). Documents inédits relatifs à l'histoire de la Grèce au Moyen âge publiés sous les auspices de la Chambre des députés de Grèce
According to medieval texts, Justinian II (in 690s) relocated a large number of Mardaites to the southern coast of
Asia Minor, particularly Pamphylia, Lycia and Cilicia. Later on, in the 9th century, Mardaites moved to the themes of the Peloponnese, Epirus (including Acarnania, Aetolia) and Cephalenia.
An in-depth examination at the term Arnaut is provided, linking it with the Turkish term Bashi-Bazouks and mercenary. Arnaut is a term that has become later falsified in mainstream history to represent someone of Shqiptar Albanian origin but in fact it was a term that corresponded to a mercenary and especially a hired soldier from the region of Arnavutluk, the Turkish term for Albania. These soldiers were not ethnically Shqiptars but actually came from many different ethnic backgrounds.
We explore the history of the north African Corsair that were used as navy fleets by the Ottomans. These north African Corsair pirates would explore the coasts of Albania and would settle in certain various regions around Albania, Greece and Montenegro. They would be known for pillaging, stealing and raiding.
Berber cultural traits have been found amongst today's Albanians such as the Tagelemust headwear, which is not found in any neighbouring country within the Balkan region or Anatolia. Along with Y-DNA North African genes present amongst some Albanians today as well as Berber words found in the Albanian language, these are all undeniable evidence of Berber influence that exists amongst the Albanians of today.
