10 Most Brutal Torture Techniques In The Medieval Ages

We count the top 10 most brutal torture techniques from the rack to impalement from Vlad the impeller
During the Middle Ages, torture was considered a legitimate way to extract confessions, punish offenders, and perform executions. Some methods were considerably crueler than others — these 10 being among the most barbaric and brutal.
Europe's Medieval period lasted from the 5th to the 15th century. During this time, torture was often used to extract confessions, or obtain the names of accomplices or other information about crimes. Laws and local customs did not impose limits on the treatment of prisoners or the extent to which torture could be inflicted. In fact, confessions were not considered genuine or sincere when so-called "light torture" was used (such as toe wedging and strappado).
Different types of torture were used depending on the victim's crime, gender, and social status. Skilled torturers would use methods, devices, and instruments to prolong life as long as possible while inflicting agonizing pain. Many prisoners were tortured prior to execution in order to obtain additional information; in many of these cases, the execution method was part of the torture endured by prisoners.
There are dozens upon dozens of different torture techniques and devices.

Torture
Torture (from the Latin tortus, “twisted") is the act of deliberately inflicting physical or psychological pain on an organism in order to fulfil some desire of the torturer or compel some action from the victim. Torture, by definition, is a knowing and intentional act; deeds which unknowingly or negligently inflict pain without a specific intent to do so are not typically considered torture.
Torture has been carried out or sanctioned by individuals, groups, and states throughout history from ancient times to modern day, and forms of torture can vary greatly in duration from only a few minutes to several days or longer. Reasons for torture can include punishment, revenge, political re-education, deterrence, interrogation or coercion of the victim or a third party, or simply the sadistic gratification of those carrying out or observing the torture. The need to torture another is thought to be the result of internal psychological pressure in the psyche of the torturer. The torturer may or may not intend to kill or injure the victim, but sometimes torture is deliberately fatal and can precede a murder or serve as a form of capital punishment. In other cases, the torturer may be indifferent to the condition of the victim. Alternatively, some forms of torture are designed to inflict psychological pain or leave as little physical injury or evidence as possible while achieving the same psychological devastation. Depending on the aim, even a form of torture that is intentionally fatal may be prolonged to allow the victim to suffer as long as possible (such as half-hanging).

Many prisoners were tortured prior to execution in order to obtain additional information; in many of these cases, the execution method was part of the torture endured by prisoners.

Documents obtained by the fifth estate show Canadian officials not only knew Abdullah Almalki, Ahmad Abou-Elmaati and Muayyed Nureddin would likely be tortured at the hands of Syrian intelligence officers, they supplied them with interrogation questions.
Two separate federal inquiries found Canadian authorities played a role in the torture of Canadians abroad and the trio -- none of whom was ever arrested in Canada for suspected terror offences -- filed a $100-million lawsuit against the government in 2006.
Earlier this year, their lawyers won a lengthy court battle with the RCMP and CSIS to gain access to nearly 18,000 pages of heavily redacted documents.
CBC News obtained exclusive access to the documents.
In “The Torture Files,” a joint investigation by the fifth estate and CBC’s The National, Terence McKenna explores just how far CSIS and the RCMP went in their collaboration with the brutal Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad that resulted in the torture of three Canadians.
The treasure trove consists of internal memos, briefing notes from field agents to their superiors, inter-agency communications, emails, reports and even a memo that shows at least one RCMP officer on the case might have had serious doubts about their targets.

Canadian officials supplied Syrian torturers with interrogation questions for three Canadians who were detained and tortured in Syria and Egypt during the post-Sept. 11 crackdown on terror suspects.
Documents obtained by the fifth estate show Canadian officials not only knew Abdullah Almalki, Ahmad Abou-Elmaati and Muayyed Nureddin would likely be tortured at the hands of Syrian intelligence officers, they supplied them with interrogation questions.
Two separate federal inquiries found Canadian authorities played a role in the torture of Canadians abroad and the trio -- none of whom was ever arrested in Canada for suspected terror offences -- filed a $100-million lawsuit against the government in 2006.
Earlier this year, their lawyers won a lengthy court battle with the RCMP and CSIS to gain access to nearly 18,000 pages of heavily redacted documents.
CBC News obtained exclusive access to the documents.
In “The Torture Files,” a joint investigation by the fifth estate and CBC’s The National, Terence McKenna explores just how far CSIS and the RCMP went in their collaboration with the brutal Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad that resulted in the torture of three Canadians.
The treasure trove consists of internal memos, briefing notes from field agents to their superiors, inter-agency communications, emails, reports and even a memo that shows at least one RCMP officer on the case might have had serious doubts about their targets.

En plus de 20 ans de carrière, Jean-Marc Parent n'a jamais cessé de rebondir et de surprendre. En 2005, il a fait un retour fracassant avec son spectacle URGENCE DE VIVRE. Maintenant, il nous présente un tout nouvel épisode de ses aventures rocambolesques. Passé maître ans l'art de raconter le quotidien, Jean-Marc nous promet un spectacle saisissant et hyperréaliste... pour le plus grand bonheur de son public. Jean-Marc Parent s'est mérité une plaque célébrant plus de 300 000 billets vendus lors de cette tournée ainsi que le prix de Spectacle d'Humour de l'Année au Gala Des Olivier 2012.
Après 330 représentations dans plus d'une quarantaine de villes du Québec, le lancement de ce DVD/BluRay marque la fin d'une aventure de quatre ans pour Jean-Marc Parent. «C'était une belle tournée. Après le gros succès d'"Urgence de vivre", je voulais revenir avec quelque chose d'aussi fort. Finalement, "Torture" est même encore plus drôle. J'ai toujours eu un côté social, qui est très présent dans ce show. Je parle des tortures de l'être humain, et il y a de belles lignes, sans jamais être lourd.»
Même s'il n'a fait que trois ou quatre représentations par semaine, il en sort toujours très fatigué, car chaque spectacle dure environ trois heures. «C'est ma faute, mais je n'ai pas le droit de faire seulement une heure et demie. De toute façon, je ne pourrais pas, mais je ne suis pas obligé de faire quatre heures non plus. Si je fais 30-45 minutes de plus, les gens vont être content.»
Pourtant, il n'y a aucune nostalgie chez l'humoriste qui avoue avoir déjà hâte au prochain spectacle. «Pour moi, c'est comme vendre une voiture, j'ai hâte d'acheter la prochaine. J'ai envie de partir dans un autre voyage.»
Avant de revenir avec un nouveau spectacle solo, Jean-Marc prépare son prochain «Évènement JMP» pour l'été 2015 prochain et il travaille aussi sur une série télé. «C'est une série de fiction, pas nécessairement une grosse comédie. On va rire parce que ce sont des vérités de la vie, un peu comme "Torture". Ça fait cinq ans que j'ai cette idée en tête. J'ai fait le synopsis, mais je vais travailler avec des auteurs pour l'écriture. On va l'écrire durant l'hiver 2014/2015 et on devrait tourner durant l'été 2015 prochain.»Après 30 ans de succès sur scène, Jean-Marc Parent est encore impressionné de ce qui lui arrive. «Je veux remercier les gens qui se déplacent pour me voir depuis tout ce temps. C'est incroyable.»
