The Ak Chin Indian Community of the Maricopa (Ak Chin) Indian Reservation is a Native American community located in the Santa Cruz Valley in Arizona. The community is composed mainly of Akimel O'odham and Tohono O'odham, as well as some Hia-Ced O'odham members.
Ak-Chin is an O'odham word that means the "mouth of the arroyo."
The Maricopa Reservation was founded in 1912 and has been reduced from 47,600 acres to its current 22,000 acres. The reservation is located in Pinal County, Arizona within the Sonoran Desert. Averaging an elevation of 1,186 feet, this reservation located 37 miles south of Phoenix. Much of the land is good for farming, and 15,000 acres are irrigated.
The Ak-Chin Indian Community is headquartered in Maricopa, Arizona. The current tribal council is as follows:
As of 2000, the population living in the community was 742, with a median age of 24.2, compared to a median age of 37.1 for all of Pinal County. 89.4% of the population was American Indian or Alaska Native alone or in combination with other races. Most of the population lives in Ak-Chin Village, in the western part of the reservation. Part of the city of Maricopa also lies within reservation territory.
A community is a social unit of any size that shares common values, or that is situated in a given geographical area (e.g. a village or town). It is a group of people who are connected by durable relations that extend beyond immediate genealogical ties, and who mutually define that relationship as important to their social identity and practice. Although communities are usually small, community may also refer to large groups, such as national communities, international communities, and virtual communities.
The word "community" is derived from the Old French comuneté which comes from the Latin communitas (from Latin communis, things held in common).
In human communities, intent, belief, resources, preferences, needs, and risks, may be shared in common, affecting the identity of the participants, and their degree of cohesiveness.
Community studies is an academic field drawing on both sociology and anthropology and the social research methods of ethnography and participant observation in the study of community. In academic settings around the world, community studies is variously a sub-discipline of anthropology or sociology, or an independent discipline. It is often interdisciplinary and geared toward practical applications rather than purely theoretical perspectives. Community studies is sometimes combined with other fields, i.e., "Urban and Community Studies," "Health and Community Studies," or "Family and Community studies."

Tribal Gaming in Arizona is so much more than commercial casinos and resorts. Since the Gaming Compact was signed between Arizona and Tribes in 2002, Tribal Gaming has helped Tribal Communities overcome centuries of displacement and limited economic opportunities to become stronger, self-governing communities. Not only does this create opportunities for the Tribes themselves, but also for the communities that surround them, especially in rural areas of Arizona. Over the next few months, we will present a series of profiles that reflect some of the many faces of Tribal Gaming. Our first begins with Leona Kakar, member of the Ak-Chin Indian Community. In it, she speaks about life before Tribal Gaming, and the opportunities for her community and the surrounding area since. Learn more at ...

We are at Ellora caves in India, and I am going to show you some solid evidence about a secret underground area that is hidden under these caves. As you can see, there is a rectangular tunnel about 1 foot wide that is vertically going down, and is not open for public access. I asked the security guards if I could take a closer look and they told me that visitors are not allowed but they also told me that, this tunnel is over 40 feet deep and then it takes a right angle turn to proceed underground. Nobody knows what's inside after that because the tunnel becomes too narrow for human beings to get through it. Here is another one that is hiding in plain sight. You can see a channel on the ground and there is a small rectangular opening at the end of this passage that would drain the water to...
