Red hot Tahs thrash Sunwolves
The Waratahs canter home in their first game in Japan turning a 26-12 half-time lead into a 57-12 thrashing of the Sunwolves in Tokyo.
In 30-degree heat and with England coach Eddie Jones watching from the stands, the 2014 Super Rugby champions lived up to their surprising form as good travellers, quickly shutting down a spirited Sunwolves attack to win 57-12 in their fifth victory on the road.
They go into the penultimate round of the regular season level-pegging with the Brumbies on 39 points. But despite putting a spectacular 57 points on their Japanese rivals, they fell four points short of knocking off the Brumbies on points differential and still cede top spot in the conference to their rival thanks to one fewer win.Â
NSW captain Michael Hooper acknowledged his team's season could go down to the wire.Â
"Unfortunately we have no bearing over what the Brumbies do in their last two games, we can only sit back and watch," Hooper said.Â
"However it's all focusing on us, what we can do, and it started with today. It was always going to be tough to get the points we wanted but we did that and [that is] starting to get [us] where we want to go."
The Hurricanes are up next for NSW and present an entirely difference challenge. Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson will be glad to have given his side a cobweb-clearing run in Japan but will be hoping the air miles do not exact too large a toll. The Wellington outfit's defence will be much stiffer and their attack much more clinical.Â
Gibson said halfback Matt Lucas, who stepped in for Wallaby No.9 Nick Phipps this week, could miss the final two games of the regular season after rolling an ankle. Lucas was among a number of NSW players who overcame the sticky conditions and early wobbles to notch standout performances in the blue jersey.
"I felt the Sunwolves were very competitive, I always thought they would be competitive early, they put a lot of pressure on us at times and we were a little bit rusty, as we expected coming back together after a short break," Gibson said.Â
"I was pleased by the end of the game we started to get some flow and we scored some excellent tries."
Lucas and ex-rugby league winger Reece Robinson scored doubles to both stake claims for ongoing starting honours in blue, while Jack Dempsey, Israel Folau, Andrew Kellaway, Matt Carraro and returning finisher Taqele Naiyaravoro also contributed tries.Â
The Waratahs opened the scoring thanks to a magnificent break from inside centre Rob Horne, who had Will Skelton shadowing him in support. The Waratahs' big bopper passed to skipper Michael Hooper and Matt Lucas banged it down underneath the posts. Bernard Foley converted to make it 7-0.Â
Skelton was the second man in on a tackle and was penalised for going high and No.10 Yu Tamura kicked the penalty goal to put the Sunwolves on the scoreboard before the booming boot of ex-Cheetahs and Sharks fullback Riaan Viljoen made it 7-6 in the 23rd minute.Â

Naiyaravoro's return game for NSW was marred by 10 minutes in the bin for holding back Sunwolves winger Yasutaka Sasakura and it cost the Waratahs the lead when Tamura kicked the penalty goal.Â
But the Waratahs hit back thanks to Folau's quick hands, putting young blindside flanker Dempsey away for a try in the 28th minute. Foley added the extras to make it 14-9.Â
Some lacklustre service from Lucas put the Waratahs under pressure in their own half and the Sunwolves came away with three points. Folau scored next with a busting 50m dash gave Folau and Kellaway had the last laugh of the half, beating four defenders to score just before the siren, putting the Waratahs a comfortable 26-12 ahead.Â
Robinson opened the second half in spectacular fashion, bagging a double in the space of four minutes, helped by a bullocking run from hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau, before tries to Lucas, Carraro and Naiyaravoro sealed the match.Â
