From GIANT Buddhas to giant library heads to Peter the Great to many more...these are the 15 BIGGEST Statues in the world.
This surreal statue looks like a giant bust of a man that has a block instead of a face, and although it looks just like a stunning piece of public art, there is actually more to this statue than meets the eye. The 81 foot tall La Tete Carrée is also a functioning library. Inside that big old blockhead is three floors of books that anyone can get inside and check out! To visit the square head library, you just have to make it out to Nice, France.
At the foot of the Batu Caves in Selangor, Malaysia stands one of the tallest statues of a Hindu deity in the world. It stands 140 feet tall and was made from more than 1550 pounds of concrete, 350 tons of steel and 300 liters of gold paint.
The Statue of Liberty is an iconic statue sitting on Liberty Island right outside New York City. That name is actually a nickname, it’s official name is Liberty Enlightening the World. It was built by the French and given to the United States in 1886 to celebrate American Independence from the British.
This dynamic statue stands above a cliff in Manado City, Indonesia. It was thought up by Ciputra, an Indian real estate developer. It took over 3 years and $540,000 US dollars to build this huge statue. It stands at a total of 158 feet including its steel pedestal. It is one of the tallest statue of Jesus in the world.
The African Renaissance Monument is a 49-meter tall bronze statue situated on top of a hill known as Collines des Mamelles right outside Dakar, Senegal. It was built overlooking at the Atlantic Ocean and designed by Senegalese resident Pierre Goudiaby and the president Abdoulaye Wade but was actually constructed by North Korean company Mansudae Overseas Projects. It was completed in 2010 and celebrated the 50th anniversary of Senegal gaining independence from France. It is currently the tallest statue in Africa.
The Motherland Calls statue was built to commemorate the Battle of Stalingrad during World War II. It’s built in the city of Volgograd in Russia. It was built using more than 7900 metric tonnes of concrete and was presented in 1967.
The Great Buddha of Thailand is the tallest statue in the country, standing at 302 feet high and 210 feet wide. It is completely constructed out of concrete and covered in gold paint. It took 18 years to build and the temple it’s connected to is home to “Hell Park” which is a group of statues that graphically depict the hellish fate that awaits any sinners in the afterlife.
This is tall statue appropriately commemorating one of the tallest rulers in history. Peter the Great stood at around 6’6” and this statue stands at 321 feet. The 1,000-ton statue was erected in 1997 to commemorate 300 years of the Russian Navy which Peter the Great established. Although it is the eighth tallest statue in the world, most of the intention it gets is about how ugly it is.
This breathtaking statue stands at a whopping 325 feet tall. It depicts Guishan Guanyin of the Thousand Hands and Eyes and stands in Changsha, Hunan in China. The Chinese government invested 260 million yuan which equates to more than $39 million USD. The entire statue is gilded with bronze.
The Sendai Daikannon that represents the Japanese Buddhist Bodhisattva. The 330 feet tall statue stands on the top of a hill in Sendai, Japan and can be seen from almost any point in the city. Sendai Daikannon holds a jar of water in its left hand to represent wisdom and a wishing jewel in its right hand.
This statue was built in the Henan province to the honor of the Chinese Emperors Yan and Huang. Construction was started in 1987 and took 20 years to complete. The Chinese Government spent the equivalent of $22.5 million US dollars on the construction of this 347-foot tall statue.
This is a statue built in the image of Guan Yin, the Buddhist Goddess of compassion. It was erected in Hainan province of China in 2005. The statue itself stands at 354 feet high but including its pedestal and building that it stands on gives it a height of 443 feet. It took six years to build her to completion.

8. Melting Cow
Not much can be said about this statue. It’s a giant blue melting cow. It was actually just one statue for Budapest’s cow parade in 2006. The cow parade is an annual fundraiser that happens in cities all over the world. This specific statute caused a bit of a controversy because it was displayed with its butt pointing to the Catholic Szent Istvan’s Basilica. The statue was moved soon after but it was never made clear if the placement was intentional.
7. Rocky Balboa
A Rocky statue in itself isn't that weird. Rocky is a major pop culture icon and he means a lot to a lot of people. The thing that is weird about this statue is the placement, though. It’s located out of place in the Serbian village of Zitiste. What is a western icon doing in a Baltic country? The statue was built in an attempt to rebrand the village after a series of flood and landslides. The village is one of the poorest in Serbia and they believed that the statue would draw in tourism. Well, if it didn’t draw in tourism it certainly got people talking about the town.
6. London Ink
This 35-foot statue was a part of an ad campaign for the premiere of the Discovery Channel show London Ink. It’s on the south bank of the Thames between Tower Bridge and City Hall. The statue is hyper-realistic and it is a little unnerving. Except for that butt, it doesn’t look like it is shaped right. It was built by an entire team of sculptors and it became a major draw for both tourists and local Londoners.
5. Tower of Hercules
There aren’t a lot of words for this statue. Although it is just one of the many statues at the Tower of Hercules in Galicia, Spain. The weird statue is a part of the nearby sculpture garden featuring works by artists Pablo Serrano and Francisco Leiro. The tower is definitely worth the visit with a 1900 year history and plenty to look at.
4. Upside Down Charles La Trobe
This statue, believe it or not, was not supposed to be disrespectful. It’s in honor of Charles La Trobe, who was the first governor of Victoria, Australia. He founded the University of Melbourne, the Royal Botanic Gardens, and the State Library of Victoria. The statue was built in 2005 and installed at the City Museum in Gordon Reserve. The artist, Charles Robb, placed the statue upside down because La Trobe is more famous in England nowadays and if you’re viewing the statue from England then it would be right side up.
3. Totem
This statue in Leuven, Belgium doesn’t make such sense. Not even when you know what the artist was going for. The artist was native Belgium citizen Jan Fabre and it was placed in 2005. The statue was commissioned to celebrate 575 years at the Catholic University of Leuven. For some reason, the artist felt the best way to commemorate this institution was a 75-foot tall impaled bug. His reasoning was that the library in the university is carefully handpicked, cataloged, and put away for safekeeping, a lot like bugs in a collection. Nobody should be surprised, though, because this isn’t the first time that the artist has prominently featured bugs in his work. He just loves bugs.

That is not any old boot. This monument in Saratoga National Historical Park, New York is actually in honor of Benedict Arnold’s contribution at the Battle of Saratoga. It doesn’t name him because of the whole treason thing, though. Anyone who didn’t have background on this monument would just think that whoever built it had a major thing for feet. He was wounded during the battle where he sustained a severe leg injury which got him out of the soldier business. It didn’t get him out of the treason business, though, which is too bad because that probably would have saved a lot of people back then a lot of trouble.
1. Lobster Mickey
This bizarre statue was commissioned by Disney for Mickey Mouse’s 75th birthday. It was actually one of several. Disney wanted the variety of statues to be decorated to represent a certain region and placed prominently to promote the occasion. This particular statue, titled “Lobsta’ Mickey”, was made by artist Breanna Rowlette for the Boston area. After all, what is Boston known for? American history? No. The Red Sox? No. Ridiculous accents? Yes, but wrong answer. It’s Lobsta', people!

This specific statute caused a bit of a controversy because it was displayed with its butt pointing to the Catholic Szent Istvan’s Basilica. The statue was moved soon after but it was never made clear if the placement was intentional. 7. Rocky Balboa A Rocky statue in itself isn't that weird. Rocky is a major pop culture icon and he means a lot to a lot of people. The thing that is weird about this statue is the placement, though. It’s located out of place in the Serbian village of Zitiste. What is a western icon doing in a Baltic country? The statue was built in an attempt to rebrand the village after a series of flood and landslides. The village is one of the poorest in Serbia and they believed that the statue would draw in tourism. Well, if it didn’t draw in tourism it certainly got people talking about the town. 6. London Ink This 35-foot statue was a part of an ad campaign for the premiere of the Discovery Channel show London Ink. It’s on the south bank of the Thames between Tower Bridge and City Hall. The statue is hyper-realistic and it is a little unnerving. Except for that butt, it doesn’t look like it is shaped right. It was built by an entire team of sculptors and it became a major draw for both tourists and local Londoners. 5. Tower of Hercules There aren’t a lot of words for this statue. Although it is just one of the many statues at the Tower of Hercules in Galicia, Spain. The weird statue is a part of the nearby sculpture garden featuring works by artists Pablo Serrano and Francisco Leiro. The tower is definitely worth the visit with a 1900 year history and plenty to look at. 4. Upside Down Charles La Trobe This statue, believe it or not, was not supposed to be disrespectful. It’s in honor of Charles La Trobe, who was the first governor of Victoria, Australia. He founded the University of Melbourne, the Royal Botanic Gardens, and the State Library of Victoria. The statue was built in 2005 and installed at the City Museum in Gordon Reserve. The artist, Charles Robb, placed the statue upside down because La Trobe is more famous in England nowadays and if you’re viewing the statue from England then it would be right side up. 3. Totem This statue in Leuven, Belgium doesn’t make such sense. Not even when you know what the artist was going for. The artist was native Belgium citizen Jan Fabre and it was placed in 2005. The statue was commissioned to celebrate 575 years at the Catholic University of Leuven. For some reason, the artist felt the best way to commemorate this institution was a 75-foot tall impaled bug. His reasoning was that the library in the university is carefully handpicked, cataloged, and put away for safekeeping, a lot like bugs in a collection. Nobody should be surprised, though, because this isn’t the first time that the artist has prominently featured bugs in his work. He just loves bugs. 2. Boot Monument That is not any old boot. This monument in Saratoga National Historical Park, New York is actually in honor of Benedict Arnold’s contribution at the Battle of Saratoga. It doesn’t name him because of the whole treason thing, though. Anyone who didn’t have background on this monument would just think that whoever built it had a major thing for feet. He was wounded during the battle where he sustained a severe leg injury which got him out of the soldier business. It didn’t get him out of the treason business, though, which is too bad because that probably would have saved a lot of people back then a lot of trouble. 1. Lobster Mickey This bizarre statue was commissioned by Disney for Mickey Mouse’s 75th birthday. It was actually one of several. Disney wanted the variety of statues to be decorated to represent a certain region and placed prominently to promote the occasion. This particular statue, titled “Lobsta’ Mickey”, was made by artist Breanna Rowlette for the Boston area. After all, what is Boston known for? American history? No. The Red Sox? No. Ridiculous accents? Yes, but wrong answer. It’s Lobsta', people!

It took 18 years to build and the temple it’s connected to is home to “Hell Park” which is a group of statues that graphically depict the hellish fate that awaits any sinners in the afterlife.

This statue was built in the Henan province to the honor of the Chinese Emperors Yan and Huang. Construction was started in 1987 and took 20 years to complete. The Chinese Government spent the equivalent of $22.5 million US dollars on the construction of this 347-foot tall statue.
This is a statue built in the image of Guan Yin, the Buddhist Goddess of compassion. It was erected in Hainan province of China in 2005. The statue itself stands at 354 feet high but including its pedestal and building that it stands on gives it a height of 443 feet. It took six years to build her to completion.

8. Melting Cow
Not much can be said about this statue. It’s a giant blue melting cow. It was actually just one statue for Budapest’s cow parade in 2006. The cow parade is an annual fundraiser that happens in cities all over the world. This specific statute caused a bit of a controversy because it was displayed with its butt pointing to the Catholic Szent Istvan’s Basilica. The statue was moved soon after but it was never made clear if the placement was intentional.
7. Rocky Balboa
A Rocky statue in itself isn't that weird. Rocky is a major pop culture icon and he means a lot to a lot of people. The thing that is weird about this statue is the placement, though. It’s located out of place in the Serbian village of Zitiste. What is a western icon doing in a Baltic country? The statue was built in an attempt to rebrand the village after a series of flood and landslides. The village is one of the poorest in Serbia and they believed that the statue would draw in tourism. Well, if it didn’t draw in tourism it certainly got people talking about the town.
6. London Ink
This 35-foot statue was a part of an ad campaign for the premiere of the Discovery Channel show London Ink. It’s on the south bank of the Thames between Tower Bridge and City Hall. The statue is hyper-realistic and it is a little unnerving. Except for that butt, it doesn’t look like it is shaped right. It was built by an entire team of sculptors and it became a major draw for both tourists and local Londoners.
5. Tower of Hercules
There aren’t a lot of words for this statue. Although it is just one of the many statues at the Tower of Hercules in Galicia, Spain. The weird statue is a part of the nearby sculpture garden featuring works by artists Pablo Serrano and Francisco Leiro. The tower is definitely worth the visit with a 1900 year history and plenty to look at.
4. Upside Down Charles La Trobe
This statue, believe it or not, was not supposed to be disrespectful. It’s in honor of Charles La Trobe, who was the first governor of Victoria, Australia. He founded the University of Melbourne, the Royal Botanic Gardens, and the State Library of Victoria. The statue was built in 2005 and installed at the City Museum in Gordon Reserve. The artist, Charles Robb, placed the statue upside down because La Trobe is more famous in England nowadays and if you’re viewing the statue from England then it would be right side up.
3. Totem
This statue in Leuven, Belgium doesn’t make such sense. Not even when you know what the artist was going for. The artist was native Belgium citizen Jan Fabre and it was placed in 2005. The statue was commissioned to celebrate 575 years at the Catholic University of Leuven. For some reason, the artist felt the best way to commemorate this institution was a 75-foot tall impaled bug. His reasoning was that the library in the university is carefully handpicked, cataloged, and put away for safekeeping, a lot like bugs in a collection. Nobody should be surprised, though, because this isn’t the first time that the artist has prominently featured bugs in his work. He just loves bugs.

That is not any old boot. This monument in Saratoga National Historical Park, New York is actually in honor of Benedict Arnold’s contribution at the Battle of Saratoga. It doesn’t name him because of the whole treason thing, though. Anyone who didn’t have background on this monument would just think that whoever built it had a major thing for feet. He was wounded during the battle where he sustained a severe leg injury which got him out of the soldier business. It didn’t get him out of the treason business, though, which is too bad because that probably would have saved a lot of people back then a lot of trouble.

This bizarre statue was commissioned by Disney for Mickey Mouse’s 75th birthday. It was actually one of several. Disney wanted the variety of statues to be decorated to represent a certain region and placed prominently to promote the occasion. This particular statue, titled “Lobsta’ Mickey”, was made by artist Breanna Rowlette for the Boston area. After all, what is Boston known for? American history? No. The Red Sox? No. Ridiculous accents? Yes, but wrong answer. It’s Lobsta', people!

Organisers and volunteers had instructed participants not to click selfies, but youngsters were seen making the most of the opportunity with their friends and family.
