Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. Colbert is best known for his work as a television host, writer, actor, and producer, and best known for his charity work teaching English as a second language on Tunisian date farms. Prior to joining the CBS family -- and being officially adopted by network president Les Moonves -- Colbert helmed “The Colbert Report,” which aired nearly 1,500 episodes and required Stephen to wear nearly 1,500 different neckties. The program received two Peabody Awards, two Grammy Awards, and several unwelcome shoulder massages. John Robert Lewis (born February 21, 1940) is an American politician, and civil rights leader. He is the U.S. Representative for Georgia's 5th congressional district, serving since 1987, and is the dean of the Georgia congressional delegation. The district includes the northern three-quarters of Atlanta.
Lewis is the only living "Big Six" leader of the American Civil Rights Movement, having been the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), playing a key role in the struggle to end legalized racial discrimination and segregation. A member of the Democratic Party, Lewis is a member of the Democratic leadership of the House of Representatives and has served in the Whip organization since shortly after his first election to the U.S. Congress.
He is Senior Chief Deputy Whip, leading an organization of chief deputy whips and serves as the primary assistant to the Democratic Whip. He has held this position since 1991.
By 1963, he was recognized as one of the "Big Six" leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, along with Whitney Young, A. Phillip Randolph, James Farmer and Roy Wilkins. In that year, Lewis helped plan the historic March on Washington in August 1963, the occasion of Dr. King's celebrated "I Have a Dream" speech. Currently, he is the last remaining speaker from the march. Lewis represented SNCC, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and at 23 was the youngest speaker that day.[4]
In 1964, Lewis coordinated SNCC's efforts for "Mississippi Freedom Summer," a campaign to register black voters across the South. The Freedom Summer was an attempt to expose college students from around the country to the perils of African-American life in the South. Lewis traveled the country encouraging students to spend their summer break trying to help people in Mississippi, the most recalcitrant state in the union, to register and vote. Lewis became nationally known during his prominent role in the Selma to Montgomery marches. On March 7, 1965 – a day that would become known as "Bloody Sunday" – Lewis and fellow activist Hosea Williams led over 600 marchers across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. At the end of the bridge, they were met by Alabama State Troopers who ordered them to disperse. When the marchers stopped to pray, the police discharged tear gas and mounted troopers charged the demonstrators, beating them with night sticks. Lewis's skull was fractured, but he escaped across the bridge, to a church in Selma. Before he could be taken to the hospital, John Lewis appeared before the television cameras calling on President Johnson to intervene in Alabama. On his head, Lewis bears scars that are still visible today.
Historian Howard Zinn wrote: "At the great Washington March of 1963, the chairman of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), John Lewis, speaking to the same enormous crowd that heard Martin Luther King's I Have a Dream speech, was prepared to ask the right question: 'Which side is the federal government on?' That sentence was eliminated from his speech by organizers of the March to avoid offending the Kennedy Administration. But Lewis and his fellow SNCC workers had experienced, again and again, the strange passivity of the national government in the face of Southern violence."
Lewis opposed the U.S. waging of the 1991 Gulf War, NAFTA, and the 2000 trade agreement with China that passed the House. Lewis opposed the Clinton administration on NAFTA and welfare reform.[24] After welfare reform passed, Lewis was described as outraged; he said, "Where is the sense of decency? What does it profit a great nation to conquer the world, only to lose its soul?"[30] In 1994, when Clinton was considering invading Haiti, Lewis, in contrast to the Congressional Black Caucus as a whole, opposed armed intervention.[31] When Clinton did send troops to Haiti, Lewis called for supporting the troops and called the intervention a "mission of peace".[32] In 1998, when Clinton was considering a military strike against Iraq, Lewis said he would back the president if American forces were ordered into action.[33] In 2001, three days after the September 11 attacks, Lewis voted to give Bush authority to retaliate in a vote that was 420–1; Lewis called it probably one of his toughest votes.[26] In 2002, he sponsored the Peace Tax Fund bill, a conscientious objection to military taxation initiative that had been reintroduced yearly since 1972.[34] Lewis was a "fierce partisan critic of President Bush" and the Iraq war.[11] The Associated Press said he was "the first major House figure to suggest impeaching George W. Bush," arguing that the president "deliberately, systematically violated the law" in authorizing the National Security Agency to conduct wiretaps without a warrant. Lewis said, "He is not King, he is president."

Classical and known composition of course, but this is not classical music. This is jazz, or may be better to call it third stream, a cross-over between classical music and jazz. Jazzing the classics is something that has been done many times but it's really amazing how Lewis built his astonishing rendition around, and inside, the Well Tempered Clavier. He subtitled the work « The Bridge Game ». The most disconcerting version I ever heard. Much better than the K. Jarret's ridiculous one using a harpsichord. I don't really care about J. Pareles ( N.Y. Times) sending flowers to Jarret ( the media darling) and trying to destroy Lewis' work. For my own taste, this is a stylish and technical exploit. Just sayin'.

John Robert Lewis (born February 21, 1940) is an American politician, and civil rights leader. He is the U.S. Representative for Georgia's 5th congressional district, serving since 1987, and is the dean of the Georgia congressional delegation. The district includes the northern three-quarters of Atlanta.
Lewis is the only living "Big Six" leader of the American Civil Rights Movement, having been the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), playing a key role in the struggle to end legalized racial discrimination and segregation. A member of the Democratic Party, Lewis is a member of the Democratic leadership of the House of Representatives and has served in the Whip organization since shortly after his first election to the U.S. Congress.
He is Senior Chief Deputy Whip, leading an organization of chief deputy whips and serves as the primary assistant to the Democratic Whip. He has held this position since 1991.
By 1963, he was recognized as one of the "Big Six" leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, along with Whitney Young, A. Phillip Randolph, James Farmer and Roy Wilkins. In that year, Lewis helped plan the historic March on Washington in August 1963, the occasion of Dr. King's celebrated "I Have a Dream" speech. Currently, he is the last remaining speaker from the march. Lewis represented SNCC, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and at 23 was the youngest speaker that day.[4]
In 1964, Lewis coordinated SNCC's efforts for "Mississippi Freedom Summer," a campaign to register black voters across the South. The Freedom Summer was an attempt to expose college students from around the country to the perils of African-American life in the South. Lewis traveled the country encouraging students to spend their summer break trying to help people in Mississippi, the most recalcitrant state in the union, to register and vote. Lewis became nationally known during his prominent role in the Selma to Montgomery marches. On March 7, 1965 – a day that would become known as "Bloody Sunday" – Lewis and fellow activist Hosea Williams led over 600 marchers across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. At the end of the bridge, they were met by Alabama State Troopers who ordered them to disperse. When the marchers stopped to pray, the police discharged tear gas and mounted troopers charged the demonstrators, beating them with night sticks. Lewis's skull was fractured, but he escaped across the bridge, to a church in Selma. Before he could be taken to the hospital, John Lewis appeared before the television cameras calling on President Johnson to intervene in Alabama. On his head, Lewis bears scars that are still visible today.
Historian Howard Zinn wrote: "At the great Washington March of 1963, the chairman of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), John Lewis, speaking to the same enormous crowd that heard Martin Luther King's I Have a Dream speech, was prepared to ask the right question: 'Which side is the federal government on?' That sentence was eliminated from his speech by organizers of the March to avoid offending the Kennedy Administration. But Lewis and his fellow SNCC workers had experienced, again and again, the strange passivity of the national government in the face of Southern violence."
Lewis opposed the U.S. waging of the 1991 Gulf War, NAFTA, and the 2000 trade agreement with China that passed the House. Lewis opposed the Clinton administration on NAFTA and welfare reform.[24] After welfare reform passed, Lewis was described as outraged; he said, "Where is the sense of decency? What does it profit a great nation to conquer the world, only to lose its soul?"[30] In 1994, when Clinton was considering invading Haiti, Lewis, in contrast to the Congressional Black Caucus as a whole, opposed armed intervention.[31] When Clinton did send troops to Haiti, Lewis called for supporting the troops and called the intervention a "mission of peace".[32] In 1998, when Clinton was considering a military strike against Iraq, Lewis said he would back the president if American forces were ordered into action.[33] In 2001, three days after the September 11 attacks, Lewis voted to give Bush authority to retaliate in a vote that was 420–1; Lewis called it probably one of his toughest votes.[26] In 2002, he sponsored the Peace Tax Fund bill, a conscientious objection to military taxation initiative that had been reintroduced yearly since 1972.[34] Lewis was a "fierce partisan critic of President Bush" and the Iraq war.[11] The Associated Press said he was "the first major House figure to suggest impeaching George W. Bush," arguing that the president "deliberately, systematically violated the law" in authorizing the National Security Agency to conduct wiretaps without a warrant. Jazzing the classics is something that has been done many times but it's really amazing how Lewis built his astonishing rendition around, and inside, the Well Tempered Clavier. He subtitled the work « The Bridge Game ». The most disconcerting version I ever heard. Much better than the K. Jarret's ridiculous one using a harpsichord. I don't really care about J. Pareles ( N.Y. Times) sending flowers to Jarret ( the media darling) and trying to destroy Lewis' work. For my own taste, this is a stylish and technical exploit. Just sayin'.

John Lewis is a chain of upmarket department stores operating throughout Great Britain. The chain is owned by the John Lewis Partnership. The first John Lewis store was opened in 1864 in Oxford Street, London.

In 1905 Lewis acquired a second store, Peter Jones in Sloane Square, London. His son, John Spedan Lewis, founded the John Lewis Partnership in 1920 after thinking up the idea during his days in charge of Peter Jones. John Spedan Lewis also thought up the idea of the Gazette, the partnership's in-house magazine, first published in 1918.
In 1933 the partnership purchased its first store outside London, the long established Jessop & Son in Nottingham. Jessops only rebranded itself as John Lewis on 27 October 2002. In 1940 the partnership bought Selfridge Provincial Stores. This group of fifteen suburban and provincial department stores included: Knight & Lee, Southsea; Cole Brothers, Sheffield; George Henry Lee, Liverpool; Robert Sayle, Cambridge; and Trewins, Watford; all of which continue to trade today but which are now re-branded as John Lewis as well as Caley's, Windsor, which has since closed.
In 1949, it was reported that London branches included Peter Jones, John Barnes, John Pound and Bon Marche. The "provincial branches" were Robert Sayle, of Peterborough and Cambridge, Tyrell and Green, of Southampton and Lance and Lance Ltd. of Weston-super-Mare. They also had "silk shops" at Hull, Edinburgh and Newcastle.[5]
In 1953 the famous Reading Department Store Heelas became part of the John Lewis group and remained named as such under the Heelas name until 2001 when it adopted the John Lewis name. Also in 1953 the partnership bought Herbert Parkinson, a textile manufacturer, a business which still makes duvets, pillows and furnishings for John Lewis.[6]The first John Lewis store constructed as part of a shopping centre was Jessops in Nottingham which has been a feature of Victoria Centre since it opened in 1972. The announcement of an anchor tenant such as John Lewis contributes to the certainty of developers' proposals, and so attracts other retailers to the area.
Before the relaxation of UK Sunday trading laws in 1994, John Lewis stores closed on Mondays to allow staff a full two day "weekend".
The John Lewis Partnership were the first department store group in the UK to adopt central buying, launching the 'Jonell(e)' name for own brand merchandise in 1937. That brand name has gradually been replaced with the 'John Lewis' name since 2001. Additional own brands include Collection by John Lewis as well as John Lewis & Co. and Collection Weekend by John Lewis. A selection of Waitrose own brand products, such as cleaning materials and party stationery, are also available from John Lewis.
Many stores acquired by the Partnership retained their original names for several years, including Tyrell and Green in Southampton until 2000,[7] Bonds in Norwich until 2001, Trewins in Watford until 2001, Jessops in Nottingham (its first store outside London) until 2002,[8] and Bainbridge's in Newcastle until 2002. Multrees Walk off St Andrew Square has several designer shops including Armani, Louis Vuitton and Calvin Klein. Over 50 producers sell a delectable range of fresh meat, fish, cheese, chutneys, bread and organic beer at the outdoor Edinburgh Farmers' Market at Castle Terrace on Saturday mornings throughout the year.
In December, you can pick up wooden toys, jewellery and unique Christmas gifts (along with a toasty mug of gluhwein) at the lively German Christmas market in Princes Street Gardens.

Oxford Street is a major road in the City of Westminster in the West End of London. It is Europe's busiest shopping street, and as of 2011 had approximately 300 shops.[1][2] The street was formerly part of the London-Oxford road which began at Newgate, City of London, and was known as the Oxford Road. Today it forms part of the A40 trunk road, although like many roads in central London which are no longer through routes it is not signposted with the road number.
Roughly halfway along Oxford Street is Oxford Circus, a busy junction with Regent Street. A diagonal crossing at Oxford Circus opened in 2009, currently the only one of its kind in central London.
Oxford Street runs for approximately one and a half miles (two and a half kilometres) from Marble Arch at the north east corner of Hyde Park, through Oxford Circus to St Giles Circus, at the junction with Charing Cross Road and Tottenham Court Road. Eastwards, the road then becomes New Oxford Street until it runs into High Holborn. Oxford Street meets with other London roads including Park Lane, New Bond Street and Regent Street. West of Marble Arch, Oxford Street becomes Bayswater Road, then Notting Hill Gate and Holland Park Avenue until it becomes the Uxbridge Road at Shepherd's Bush Roundabout. At Uxbridge it becomes the Oxford Road again, all the way to Oxford, save for some short sections where it has been given a local name.
Oxford Street is home to a number of major department stores and numerous flagship stores, as well as hundreds of smaller shops. It is the biggest shopping street within Inner London, though not the most expensive or fashionable, and forms part of a larger shopping district with Regent Street, Bond Street and a number of other smaller nearby streets.

Oxford Street is a major road in the City of Westminster in the West End of London. It is Europe's busiest shopping street, and as of 2011 had approximately 300 shops.[1][2] The street was formerly part of the London-Oxford road which began at Newgate, City of London, and was known as the Oxford Road. Today it forms part of the A40 trunk road, although like many roads in central London which are no longer through routes it is not signposted with the road number.
Roughly halfway along Oxford Street is Oxford Circus, a busy junction with Regent Street. A diagonal crossing at Oxford Circus opened in 2009, currently the only one of its kind in central London.
Oxford Street runs for approximately one and a half miles (two and a half kilometres) from Marble Arch at the north east corner of Hyde Park, through Oxford Circus to St Giles Circus, at the junction with Charing Cross Road and Tottenham Court Road. Eastwards, the road then becomes New Oxford Street until it runs into High Holborn. Oxford Street meets with other London roads including Park Lane, New Bond Street and Regent Street. West of Marble Arch, Oxford Street becomes Bayswater Road, then Notting Hill Gate and Holland Park Avenue until it becomes the Uxbridge Road at Shepherd's Bush Roundabout. At Uxbridge it becomes the Oxford Road again, all the way to Oxford, save for some short sections where it has been given a local name.
Oxford Street is home to a number of major department stores and numerous flagship stores, as well as hundreds of smaller shops. It is the biggest shopping street within Inner London, though not the most expensive or fashionable, and forms part of a larger shopping district with Regent Street, Bond Street and a number of other smaller nearby streets.
For many British retail chains their Oxford Street branch is regarded as their 'flagship' store. Major stores on the street include:
Debenhams, the flagship of the national department store chain. Formerly Marshall & Snelgrove, renamed in 1973 after being rebuilt. The original Debenham & Freebody store was in nearby Wigmore Street
HMV, the music retailer has relocated to their original site at 363 Oxford Street, following the closure of their former store at 150 Oxford Street, which had been Europe's largest music shop at 50,000 square feet (5,000 m2). There is also an HMV concession within Selfridges
House of Fraser, the London flagship of the national department store chain. The store traded as D H Evans until 2000. It is located in an art-deco building completed in 1935; it was the first department store in the UK to include escalators serving every floor
John Lewis, the third-largest department store in the UK and flagship of the John Lewis chain, opened in 1864. The store was substantially redeveloped in 2009, the building gaining an atrium running through all six levels, with a Waitrose food hall constructed in the basement.
Marks & Spencer. Marks & Spencer Marble Arch, largest Marks & Spencer store of 170,000 square feet (16,000 m2) at the junction of Oxford Street and Orchard Street. A second branch between Regent Street and Tottenham Court Road stands on the site of the famous Pantheon building. Its fine polished black granite frontage completed in 1938 was awarded Grade II Listed Building status in September 2009.
Selfridges, Oxford Street, the second-largest department store in the UK and flagship of the Selfridges chain, it has been on this site since 1909.

Each Christmas Oxford Street is decorated with festive lights. The Christmas lights began in 1959, five years after the neighbouring Regent Street began the tradition. The lights were abandoned in 1976 and 1977 due to economic recession, returning in 1978 when Oxford Street organised a laser display.[19]

This trip, from Turks Pier, by Kingston Bridge, at the back of John Lewis department store, takes about 35 minutes. The boat is the New Southern Belle, owned by Turks Launches. According to them, it's a Mississippi-style stern wheeler and brings a flavour of old New Orleans to the River Thames - although it was designed and built in Sunbury on Thames.
Hampton Court Palace was built in 1515 by Cardinal Wolesey and presented to King Henry VIII in 1529. This Tudor palace houses a large collection of orginal arms, armour, tapestries and fine paintings. It is famous for its gardens, maze and the Great Vine, planted in 1769.
Medieval Kings were crowned at Kingston and, more recently, it was voted 'Top Town' in the Guinness Guide to the best places to live in the UK.
The Thames winds and twists as it gets nearer to Hampton. There are swans, geese, ducks, coots and many rarer water birds, such as the fishing herons which can sometimes be seen among the willows and bushes along the natural embankments.

Every mug, every toy, every teapot and tiepin carrying London's Olympic 2012 brand is jealously guarded from copycats.
It's led to bumper sales according to staff running Britain's biggest souvenir shop.
STORYLINE:
You can get almost anything here.
Modern mascots Wenlock and Mandeville sit side by side with Olympic icons from ancient times.
In this store alone there are tens of thousands of products.
They've been deliberately designed to appeal to children and adults, from big spenders to those hoping for a small keepsake which might one day become a valuable memento.
Collectors dispute whether products churned out in their millions can ever become valuable which is why the manufacture of some objects, like these tiepins, are being limited to five, or ten thousand.
Christies, the international auction house, claims most merchandise commemorating Olympic events is mass produced, and as such it tends not to show a significant increase in value. But, the statement went on to say: " On the whole, these items hold more of a sentimental value, acting as a personal memento of a very special occasion. Historic items directly linked to the Olympics can increase in value - medals have sold well, and the current world record price for Olympic memorabilia sold at auction was achieved at Christie's in April 2012, when Br�al's Silver Cup, the marathon winner's cup for the inaugural Modern Olympic Games, held in Athens in 1896, sold for �541,250 ($861,129 USD)."
But those sorts of prices aren't being achieved here.
This is the UK's biggest souvenir store.
It sits on top of the Olympic Park and belongs to British department store John Lewis, which is luring in the custom with it's ringside views.
According to staff , traditional items are still a big hit. They include London's now out of service red Routemaster buses and specially boxed Mini cars.
Ruth Scharvona, the general manager of John Lewis's Stratford branch, says there's something for every taste.
"It's a huge mix from a couple of pounds for wristbands right up to designer Nick Munro who's a very iconic British designer, he's designed some solid silver teapots, to our top product in terms of price, which is a solid gold five pound coin �2,880 ($ 4,470.78 USD) if you've got some change in your pocket."
According to the John Lewis the gold coins are being mainly bought by foreign visitors - but they won't admit to numbers.
The coin comes in silver as well at around �99 ( $154 USD). It's already sold out online ( 25 July) and can only be bought at 2012 shops.

John Lewis is providing a home for the shops by giving them prime floor space in the full expectation that sales of it's own products will soar with the increased footfall from sports fans seeking trinkets.

He says: "Our running business is up about 10 to 15 per cent over the last two months, so (it's) a significant increase in what's a challenging market out there. Similarly fitness machines, we began the year in a difficult position on fitness machines, but we've seen a real resurgence in that market. We're now back into growth in the fitness machine market, something we didn't think we'd be in and certainly wouldn't be without the help of the Olympic games."

Every mug, every toy, every teapot and tiepin carrying London's Olympic 2012 brand is jealously guarded from copycats.
It's led to bumper sales according to staff running Britain's biggest souvenir shop.

You can get almost anything here.
Modern mascots Wenlock and Mandeville sit side by side with Olympic icons from ancient times.
In this store alone there are tens of thousands of products.
They've been deliberately designed to appeal to children and adults, from big spenders to those hoping for a small keepsake which might one day become a valuable memento.
Collectors dispute whether products churned out in their millions can ever become valuable which is why the manufacture of some objects, like these tiepins, are being limited to five, or ten thousand.
Christies, the international auction house, claims most merchandise commemorating Olympic events is mass produced, and as such it tends not to show a significant increase in value. But, the statement went on to say: " On the whole, these items hold more of a sentimental value, acting as a personal memento of a very special occasion. Historic items directly linked to the Olympics can increase in value - medals have sold well, and the current world record price for Olympic memorabilia sold at auction was achieved at Christie's in April 2012, when Br�al's Silver Cup, the marathon winner's cup for the inaugural Modern Olympic Games, held in Athens in 1896, sold for �541,250 ($861,129 USD)."
But those sorts of prices aren't being achieved here.
This is the UK's biggest souvenir store.
It sits on top of the Olympic Park and belongs to British department store John Lewis, which is luring in the custom with it's ringside views.
According to staff , traditional items are still a big hit. They include London's now out of service red Routemaster buses and specially boxed Mini cars.
Ruth Scharvona, the general manager of John Lewis's Stratford branch, says there's something for every taste.
"It's a huge mix from a couple of pounds for wristbands right up to designer Nick Munro who's a very iconic British designer, he's designed some solid silver teapots, to our top product in terms of price, which is a solid gold five pound coin �2,880 ($ 4,470.78 USD) if you've got some change in your pocket."
According to the John Lewis the gold coins are being mainly bought by foreign visitors - but they won't admit to numbers.
The coin comes in silver as well at around �99 ( $154 USD). It's already sold out online ( 25 July) and can only be bought at 2012 shops.
