Two police officers in the US state of Iowa are dead following what police have called "ambush-style attacks," according to local television station KWWL.

Both officers were found shot dead in their cars in separate incidents about 20 minutes apart.

Officers in the city of Urbandale in Des Moines were first called at 1.06am to respond to a report of shots fired at the corner of 70th Street and Aurora Ave.

They found an Urbandale Police Department officer dead. He was shot and killed while sitting alone in his patrol car, ABC America reported.

The second shooting occurred at about 1.26am when a Des Moines Police Department officer who was responding to the first shooting was found shot dead about three kms away at Merle Hay Road and Sheridan Ave.

"They clearly were just seated in their cars when they were shot," Sergeant Paul Parizek, a spokesman for Des Moines police, told The Washington Post. "The best they can tell from the scene there was no interaction between them and whoever did this."

Sergeant Parizek said police had little information on a suspect, but had received a description of a pickup truck with a topper.

"Suspect information is being developed at this time," the Des Moines Police Department said in a statement.

More details are expected following a press conference held by Des Moines Police Department.
