Sophie Monk on split with Eric Grothe Jr: ‘It’s a blow to the ego’

The pair had been photographed kissing in recent weeks, and had been reportedly secretly dating since August. However, media reports this week suggested things were not going well.

Speaking to KIIS 1065’s Kyle & Jackie O this morning, Monk dropped a couple of bombshells — firstly, that she and Grothe Jr had been dating for far longer than anyone realised.

“We’ve been dating on and off for, like, a couple of years, and no-one really knew. You know how it is when you [go] public, and it creates drama. We wanted to keep it special. It’s been on and off forever, but now it’s off again,” she laughed.

“False alarm everyone, I don’t have a boyfriend.”

Monk, who admitted the split was “not great for the ego,” said the media reports of Grothe Jr seeing other people had not prompted their decision to part ways.

Instead, it was based on “lots of things. I’m fine. He can sext anyone. I’ve just gotta start doing it now — I’ve gotta sext.”

The unlucky-in-love star even joked that she might try dating a woman next, given her track record with men. She was engaged to Benji Madden, but that relationship soured in 2008, and the Good Charlotte singer went on to marry Charlie’s Angels star Cameron Diaz.

After that relationship broke down, she went on to date American millionaire Jimmy Esebag who was nearly 20 years her senior.

She also dated Avatar star Sam Worthington, before he married Lara Bingle.

Asked what she was looking for in her next boyfriend, Monk hardly seemed thrilled at the prospect of re-entering the dating scene:

“I don’t know, I’m so tired. Someone who can’t be bothered anymore! I’m just not very good at relationships. I’m happy being single, to be honest,” she said.
