Hospital evacuated after smoke fills building

St John of God Hospital in Mount Lawley has been evacuated after smoke started filling the building

"All patients were removed from the hospital due to the smoke," a DFES spokeswoman said.

An investigation is ongoing and the damage bill as yet unknown.

Morning surgeries at the hospital have been cancelled and the Family Birthing Unit closed, with women in labour urged to contact their obstetricians.

Critical care patients and babies were among 80 people transferred to neighbouring hospitals.

Patients said there was a strong smell of burning rubber and they could see smoke in the corridors after the blaze started in a plant room, according to Radio 6PR.

"Heavily pregnant patients were helped out of the hospital and were given blankets," Lance White reported.

"Ambulances queued up outside the hospital to take the patients to other hospitals around Perth.

"Many of them were elderly. Smoke went through the hospital's airconditioning system, but did not reach an operating theatre where surgery was being performed."
