Was this Canberra's tamest Melbourne Cup Day ever?

Canberra's Melbourne Cup celebrations weren't marred by the drunken debauchery witnessed at Flemington, emergency services have said.

About 5200 racegoers descended on Canberra's Thoroughbred Park on Tuesday for the race that stops the nation.

The park's chief executive Peter Stubbs said the crowd was "exceptionally behaved".

"There seems to be this misconception about Melbourne Cup Day but we haven't had crowd issues for quite some years," Mr Stubbs said.

"The crowd in Canberra was exceptionally well behaved and that's been the trend for five or six years. It was a trouble-free day, there were no police or security issues."

ACT Policing said they weren't required to respond to any incidents at Thoroughbred Park on Tuesday.

"Police are pleased that the vast majority of Melbourne Cup revellers at venues across Canberra enjoyed themselves responsibly," a spokeswoman for police said.

ACT Ambulance Service's chief officer Jon Quiggin said there was "no discernible increase in either the number or type of cases attended by ACTAS" either.

It was the first time Thoroughbred Park had a full eight-race card for Cup day.

Mr Stubbs described the fields as "the best local race field in memory".
