The Kuril Islands or Kurile Islands (/ˈkʊərɪl/, /ˈkjʊərɪl/, or /kjʊˈriːl/; Russian: Кури́льские острова́, tr. Kurilskiye ostrova; IPA: [kʊˈrʲilʲskʲɪjə ɐstrɐˈva]; Japanese: クリル列島 (Kuriru rettō) or 千島列島 (Chishima rettō)), in Russia's Sakhalin Oblast region, form a volcanic archipelago that stretches approximately 1,300 km (810 mi) northeast from Hokkaido, Japan, to Kamchatka, Russia, separating the Sea of Okhotsk from the North Pacific Ocean. There are 56 islands and many minor rocks. It consists of Greater Kuril Ridge and Lesser Kuril Ridge. The total land area is 10,503.2 square kilometres (4,055.3 sq mi) and the total population is 19,434.
All of the islands are currently under Russian jurisdiction. Japan claims the two southernmost large islands (Iturup and Kunashir) as part of its territory, as well as Shikotan and the Habomai islets, which has led to the ongoing Kuril Islands dispute. They are also known in Japan as "Northern Territories".
The name Kuril originates from the autonym of the aboriginal Ainu, the islands' original inhabitants: "kur", meaning man. It may also be related to names for other islands that have traditionally been inhabited by the Ainu people, such as Kuyi or Kuye for Sakhalin and Kai for Hokkaidō. In Japanese, the Kuril Islands are known as the Chishima Islands (Kanji: 千島列島 Chishima Rettō pronounced [tɕʲiɕʲima ɽetːoː], literally, Thousand Islands Archipelago), also known as the Kuriru Islands (Katakana: クリル列島 Kuriru Rettō [kɯᵝɽʲiɽɯᵝ ɽetːoː], literally, Kuril Archipelago). Once the Russians reached the islands in the 18th century they found a pseudo-etymology from Russian kurit ("курить" - "to smoke") due to the continual fumes and steam above the islands from volcanoes.
They lie between the Sea of Okhotsk and the North Pacific Ocean. There are 56 of them with a total land area of about 15,600 square kilometers and a population of 19,000. Along with millions of seabirds, crabs and fish, the Ainu people were early inhabitants on these islands. Yet a long-running dispute over these territories still continues. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says Russia has no plans to cede parts of the disputed Kuril Islands to Japan. Last month, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the issue in Sochi. But Russia said negotiations between diplomats would continue and agreement would be hard to reach any time soon. The Russian Ministry of Defence will start building a naval base of the Pacific fleet on the Matua island near the center of the Kuril Islands chain. According to a top military official, ‘the decision to set a naval base of the Pacific fleet has been already taken, the building will be started this year’. The Russian Geographical Society along with the Defence Ministry sent an expedition in May to Matua to carry out researches. As a result some narrow-gauge railway platforms and elements of the railroad with switches were found. Colonel General Sergey Surovikin, Commander of the Eastern Military District said at the time that reinforcement of the military infrastructure in Sakhalin, Kuril Islands and in the Arctic zone is the top priority task of the state by 2020. As he claimed, the Rus...
The Kuril Islands are a chain of islands stretching across the Pacific Ocean from Northern Japan, north of the Japanese island of Hokkaido to the Russian peninsula of Kamchatka. The majority of the islands were considered part of Japan throughout much of prerecorded history. In the 17th century Russia advanced eastward and expressed interest in the island chain. In 1855 the "Treaty of Commerce, Navigation and Delimitation / Shimoda Treaty" was signed between Japan and Russia acknowledging the four southernmost islands of the chain belonging to Japan. Subsequently in 1875 another treaty was signed between the two nations: Japan (Nihon-koku) and Russia (the once "Evil Empire" / Soviet Union). It was the "Treaty of Saint Petersburg / Karafuto-Chishima Kokan Joyaku." This treaty ackno...

On the Kuril islands, there used to be a beautiful and developing town called Gornoye, which translates into English as Mountainous. The settlement was founded by Soviet soldiers, and during a short period of time it developed into a nice and civilized little town. However, the town was later destroyed as a result of an earthquake. No one wanted to rebuild the town, so it was abandoned. Pravda.Ru correspondents were horrified, when they arrived at the town. It appeared to them that the place has just been destroyed in a combat action. They saw semi-ruined apartment buildings with no windows at all and piles of construction debris. The most horrible thing was that people still live there

Russian/Nat At the far eastern edge of the Russian Federation, far closer to Tokyo than to Moscow, lie the tiny, yet disputed, Kuril Islands. The Japanese and the Russians have been arguing over the islands for years. But this week, during the first visit by a Japanese premier to Russia for twenty-five years, Keizo Obuchi and Boris Yeltsin signed an agreement which may lead to the end of the affair. But the islanders need much more than two signatures on a treaty to improve their lives. Many of them live in such poverty that even finding enough to eat is becoming a problem. Life is hard in the Kuril Islands. Lying off the Kamchatka Peninsula, the eastern coast of Russia, the tiny islands were seized as spoils by the then Soviet Union after World War Two and have, in...

Authorities and the population in Russia's Far East are closely watching reports from Japan, where nuclear specialists are struggling to bring Fukushima power plant under control, as a major disaster could affect the whole region. There is a general public fear that the plant damaged by the powerful earthquake last week could blow up and release radioactive cloud similar to what happened with the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. With westward wind, it would take only about a day for the contaminated cloud to reach Sakhalin Island, where some half a million people live. Residents in Sakhalin have been preparing for a possible disaster. Local medical equipment shops have put in urgent orders for additional portable radiation detectors after their stock sold out over the weekend. Demand for p...

What's going on with the Kuril islands? Let's find out.
Russia's Ministry of Defense has announced it will upgrade its military presence around the disputed Kuril Islands, which Japan claims as part of its territory. It has alsoG issued a statement saying that "developing military infrastructure by 2020 on Sakhalin, the Kuril island ring in the Arctic zone, will be a state priority." This coincides with the G7 summit, where Japan and other members of G7 said they could be forced to extend sanctions on Russia. The territorial dispute between Japan and Russia over the Northern Territories/Southern Kurils has been an enduring obstacle to closer relations between the two powers. Despite the passage of more than seven decades, within Japan there remains a resilience of belief that the four islands will eventually be returned. Dr James D. J. Brown will offer an account of why Tokyo believes it still has a chance of securing the return of the islands, and will also provide a summary of the Abe administration’s latest efforts to achieve this goal.

As Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe holds talks in Russia with President Vladimir Putin, the BBC looks at the background to the long-standing territorial dispute between the two nations. The islands lie off Japan's northern-most island of Hokkaido The island chain known as the Kurils stretches north across the Pacific Ocean from the Japanese island of Hokkaido to the southern tip of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. The southernmost islet in the Habomai group lies only a few kilometres off Nemuro on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. Because of the dispute, Russia and Japan have not yet signed a peace treaty to end World War II. ...

Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences, 36 Nakhimovsky Pr., Moscow, Russia During a five day period of 23 to 27 June 2014, consecutive tsunami-like waves of non-seismic origin struck a number of southern European countries, from Spain to Ukraine, causing damage and rising fright. Here we show that these waves were meteorological tsunamis, i.e. long-period ocean waves resonantly generated by intense small-scale air pressure disturbances. I'm buying lead Nike shoes
To keep myself tethered
To the days I try to lose
My mama said to slow down
You must make your own shoes
Stop dancing to the music
Of Gorillaz in a happy mood
Keep a mild groove on
Ba ba ba
Day dee bop
There you go
Get the cool
Get the cool shoe shine
There's a monkey in the jungle
Watching a vapor trail
Caught up in the conflict
Between his brain and his tail
And if time's elimination
Then we got nothing to lose
Please repeat the message
It's the music that we choose
Keep a mild groove on
Ba ba ba
Day dee bop
Okay, bring it down yeah
We gonna break out
Get the cool
Get the cool shoe shine
