Stick with the favourites this Melbourne Cup day.

That's the call from Credit Suisse analysts who reckon it's hard to go past four of the five horses at the shortest odds.

After applying their investment market nous to Tuesday's field, Credit Suisse analysts were tipping clients into a six-horse trifecta.

Their selections - based on quant factors like momentum, form and yield - included Caulfield Cup winner Jameka, early favourite Hartnell, Exospheric, Bondi Beach and a pair of outsiders in Grey Lion and Almandin.

The investment bank kicked off the annual Melbourne Cup tradition, where sell-side brokers and quant teams apply their financial market metrics to the big race.

It's all a bit of fun and Credit Suisse, like its rivals, do not pretend to be racing experts.

Fundies will be watching out for selections from Macquarie's quant teams who have set the standard on Cup day over the past decade. Other brokers and accounting firms are also expected to get in on the action and fund managers will have no shortage of reading material come Tuesday morning.

Although most brokers - like punters - are a bit low on confidence after last year's hiding at the hands of longshot Prince of Penzance.

In the spirit of an upset and the season, Credit Suisse also put forward a Halloween themed box trifecta including Hartnell, Exospheric, Wicklow Brave, Assign, Big Orange and Almoonqith.
