George Michael

Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou (born 25 June 1963), better known by his stage name George Michael, is an English singer, songwriter and record producer. Michael rose to fame during the 1980s and 1990s with his style of post-disco dance-pop. He has also been characterised as a blue-eyed soul singer, although his material draws more from middle-of-the-road pop than soul music.

As one of the world's best-selling music artists, Michael has sold more than 80 million records worldwide. His 1987 debut solo album, Faith, has on its own sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. Michael has garnered seven number one singles in the UK and eight number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. In 2008, Billboard magazine ranked Michael the 40th most successful artist on the Billboard Hot 100 Top All-Time Artists list.

Michael has won numerous music awards throughout his 30-year career, including three Brit Awards—winning Best British Male twice, four MTV Video Music Awards, four Ivor Novello Awards, three American Music Awards, and two Grammy Awards from eight nominations.

George the Poet

George Mpanga (born 14 January 1991), better known by his stage name George the Poet, is a British spoken word artist with an interest in social and political issues.

Life and career

Mpanga was born to Ugandan parents on the St Raphael's Estate in Harlesden, north-west London and began performing rap and grime when he was 15 years old. He attended Queen Elizabeth's School, Barnet and studied politics, psychology and sociology at King's College, Cambridge, where he decided to adapt his rap output into poetry to communicate more effectively with his audience. Mpanga said, "I think rappers are primarily expected to make money for the industry and provide party soundtracks, but obviously there are exceptions and grey areas. The poet’s 'role' is usually to provide thoughtful social commentary".

During his studies, Mpanga won a social enterprise competition organised by Barclays and Channel 4 called The Stake, which asked entrants how they would spend £100,000. He used his £16,000 prize to fund The Jubilee Line, a series of secondary school poetry workshops for underprivileged children in London. In May 2012, he premiered the piece "My City", about his hometown London. Subsequently, BBC Radio 1 selected him as the face of their Hackney Weekend (in June 2012), and Sky Sports F1 commissioned him to write poems for their coverage of the 2012 Formula One season and the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix. He signed to the record label Island Records in August 2013.

Search Party

Search Party were an experimental electronic new wave band originally from Tooting. Search Party consisted of Alan Rear & Lee Jacob produced by Tony Mansfield. The band members met in school and started recording together in various forms of collaboration from a young age, namely; Pinups on EMI Records & R.P.M. on Ariola Records R.P.M. were also produced by Tony Mansfield. They released their first single "Urban Foxes" in March 1982 on Magnet Records. This single has seen a bit of a cult following grow over recent years partly due to the Mansfield connection. Alan Rear & Lee Jacob featured on all Mansfield's New Musik albums. Search Party disbanded in late 1983 after releasing their second and final single "All Around The World" produced by Peter Hammond} & was a hit in Italy. Search Party did half a dozen different TV shows all over Italy at this time to promote the record further. It also appeared on the Italian compilation LP's "Various - Di Gei N°2" & "Various - Discocross No. 6" released by the label "F1 Team". An album of Search Party material was recorded for Magnet Records between 1982-83 but still remains in the Warner Bros. Records vaults who bought out Magnet Records in 1988. Alan Rear wrote six songs for Miguel Bosé's "XXX" album released on WEA in 1987 also produced by Tony Mansfield. Alan Rear is still active in music recording with the electronic musician Simeone and played on two tracks from his 2011 album "An Introduction To Simeone". Lee Jacob went on to become a music teacher & singing coach in England and has been the head of Performing Arts department at the Canterbury High School since January 2001.
