The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is the public service broadcaster of the United Kingdom, headquartered at Broadcasting House in London.
The BBC is the world's oldest national broadcasting organisation and the largest broadcaster in the world by number of employees, with over 20,950 staff in total, of whom 16,672 are in public sector broadcasting; including part-time, flexible as well as fixed contract staff, the total number is 35,402.
The BBC is established under a Royal Charter and operates under its Agreement with the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. Its work is funded principally by an annual television licence fee which is charged to all British households, companies, and organisations using any type of equipment to receive or record live television broadcasts. The fee is set by the British Government, agreed by Parliament, and used to fund the BBC's extensive radio, TV, and online services covering the nations and regions of the UK. From 1 April 2014, it also funds the BBC World Service, launched in 1932, which provides comprehensive TV, radio, and online services in Arabic, and Persian, and broadcasts in 28 languages.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/science More about this episode: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00qck1t Professor Al-Khalili looks at the 19th century chemists who struggled to impose an order on the apparently random world of the elements. From working out how many there were to discovering their unique relationships with each other, the early scientists' bid to decode the hidden order of the elements was driven by false starts and bitter disputes. But ultimately the quest would lead to one of chemistry's most beautiful intellectual creations - the periodic table.

Science historians have regarded chemistry and corpuscular philosophy as two distinct traditions. Clericuzio's view is that since the beginning of the 17th century atomism and chemistry were strictly connected. This is attested by Daniel Sennert and by many hitherto little-known French and English natural philosophers. They often combined a corpuscular theory of matter with Paracelsian chemical (and medical) doctrines. Boyle plays a central part in the present book: Clericuzio redefines Boyle's chemical views, by showing that ...

The world around us is made of atoms. Did you ever wonder where these atoms came from? How was the gold in our jewelry, the carbon in our bodies, and the iron in our cars made? In this lecture, we will trace the origin of a gold atom from the Big Bang to the present day, and beyond. You will learn how the elements were forged in the nuclear furnaces inside stars, and how, when they die, these massive stars spread the elements into space. You will learn about the origin of the building blocks of matter in the Big Bang, and we will speculate on the future of the atoms around us today. Speaker: Dr. Edward Murphy, University of Virginia Date: November 13, 2012

I'll try again but lose in the end. I just can't seem to connect.
'Cause alienation clouds my perception and ruins every new attempt.
It's hard to see clearly when you're crippled with regret
Or staring blankly through a lens of bitter self-contempt.
I just want to be kept safe from the elements outside
Or to be part of a someone else's life, further away from mine.
And when December comes I'll need the warmth of ultraviolet light.
And though I know the clouds don't listen well, I hope they can hear me now.
I'll keep sending messages into the abyss,
Hoping for some kind of response but nothing will come of it.
How does one feel a sense of hope when the storm is yet to come,
Or believe the earth will bring them life when they're always losing someone?
I just want to be kept safe from the elements outside
Or to be part of a someone else's life, further away from mine.
And when December comes I'll need the warmth of ultraviolet light.
And though I know the clouds don't listen well, I hope they can hear me now.
These nights are getting longer as my body grows colder,
And I want shelter from the world
Despite failure to get closer to the comfort of another.
I need it now more than ever, more than ever
Bring me home to a world of your own.
