Strawberries

A member of the rose family, strawberries were once believed to bring harmony and prosperity.

Varieties

Strawberries aren't sold by variety but there are actually several different types. These include the Rubygem, Sugarbaby and Harmony, which are all available from May to October.

Is it good for me?

Strawberries are rich in vitamin C and contain some dietary fibre.

Buying and storing

Look for medium-sized fruit. Spread on a plate lined with paper towel, cover and store in the fridge for up to three days.

Preparation

Strawberries are best eaten at room temperature, so remove them from the fridge 30 minutes before serving. To remove the hull, cut in a circular motion around the green leafy top. Discard.

Cooking tips

  • Enjoy raw in fruit salads.
  • Dip whole into melted chocolate.
  • Heat with a splash of sweet sticky wine and serve with ice-cream.
