MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE… To be honest, I wasn’t very excited about these when I found out I was chosen to test them out; I just figured having a couple more unbreakable mugs in the kitchen would be good. And I like most everything that’s stainless steel. Well after using them for nearly two weeks, I have been very impressed and now I am really glad I got them! I am drinking some hot peach tea from one while typing this, in fact. First of all I have to say that one of my favorite things about them is they are DISHWASHER SAFE! Most insulated mugs are not dishwasher safe, but these are, which is so nice and convenient! And they come out of the dishwasher looking as good as new! They have a comfortable rim, very smooth and not too thick, so no dribbles at the corner of my mouth when I drink my coffee. Yes, these are now my favorite mugs for drinking my coffee in the morning if I’m not going anywhere. They definitely keep things hot longer than regular ceramic mugs. I tested it to be sure it wasn’t my imagination, using my ex-favorite mug - I just poured hot water in both and checked the temp with a thermometer. It started at 140 F and after just a few minutes the water in the Peak Eclipse mug was 139 F, and the ceramic mug was 131 F. After about 25 minutes the water in the Peak Eclipse mug was 125 F, but the water in the ceramic mug was down to 115 F. And when I poured them out I measured and the ceramic mug had 2 ounces more hot water poured in, which helped it stay hot longer. Both were left totally uncovered. So to me that’s a very significant difference in a fairly short amount of time. Then I did a cold test and poured ice water into two copper mugs and one Peak Eclipse mug. About 45 minutes later the ice in the copper mugs had totally melted and there was still a few pieces of ice in the Peak Eclipse mug. There was also a lot of condensation on the copper mugs but barely any on the Peak Eclipse mug. In fact the copper mugs were dripping with condensation. And the final temperatures for the copper mugs were 46F and 50F, but the Peak Eclipse was 39 F. Also I want to point out that the inside of these is ELECTROPOLISHED - giving it a finish that is smooth as glass. I love it because it means they will be less likely to get stained and have residue build-up, and they are much more resistant to tarnish and corrosion compared to stainless steel mugs with other finishes. “Stainless steel” is not always totally stainless, but with electro-polishing it’s much more durable and stays looking great. I knew from just the feel of it that it would be easier to clean, but since I wasn’t familiar with electro-polishing, I googled it real quick and found some great info about it from a metal finishing company. They say that it makes it easier to clean, and then they elaborate: “Substantially reduces product contamination and adhesion due to the microscopic smoothness of an electropolished surface (much like a glass surface).” “Decreases cleaning time. Electropolished surfaces can be effectively hydroblasted in less time and with less pressure. Some companies report that electropolished process equipment surfaces have reduced cleaning time by more than 50 percent.” “Improves sterilization and maintenance of hygienically clean surfaces for food, drug, beverage and chemical processing equipment.” Also they explain how it has better corrosion protection: “Electropolishing yields maximum tarnish and corrosion resistance in many metals and alloys. Stainless steel contains metallic and non-metallic inclusions, which are unavoidably included during manufacture. Mechanical polishing not only fails to remove inclusions, but also tends to push them further into the surface and even increase them by further pick-up of abrasive materials. These inclusions eventually can become points of corrosion.” I think it would be great if Peak Eclipse had made some lids with open/close drinking spouts for these, so they would be spillproof and also keep drinks hot even longer. Other than that they are fantastic. I am looking forward to taking these with us when we go camping since they are lightweight, unbreakable, and will keep our hot cocoa hot for longer. But I’m also glad to have these for everyday use knowing they will last as long as we do lol!
