Melbourne
Melbourne (/ˈmɛlbərn/, AU 
i/ˈmɛlbən/) is the capital and most populous city in the Australian state of Victoria, and the second most populous city in Australia and Oceania. The name "Melbourne" refers to the area of urban agglomeration (as well as a census statistical division) spanning 9,900 km2 (3,800 sq mi) which comprises the broader metropolitan area, as well as being the common name for its city centre. The metropolis is located on the large natural bay of Port Phillip and expands into the hinterlands towards the Dandenong and Macedon mountain ranges, Mornington Peninsula and Yarra Valley. Melbourne consists of 31 municipalities. It has a population of 4,347,955 as of 2013, and its inhabitants are called Melburnians.
Founded by free settlers from the British Crown colony of Van Diemen's Land on 30 August 1835, in what was then the colony of New South Wales, it was incorporated as a Crown settlement in 1837. It was named "Melbourne" by the Governor of New South Wales, Sir Richard Bourke, in honour of the British Prime Minister of the day, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne. It was officially declared a city by Queen Victoria in 1847, after which it became the capital of the newly founded colony of Victoria in 1851. During the Victorian gold rush of the 1850s, it was transformed into one of the world's largest and wealthiest cities. After the federation of Australia in 1901, it served as the nation's interim seat of government until 1927.

Marshall Jordan, who was on his way to work as an immigration public servant when the sexual assault occurred, fought the single charge of performing an indecent act on a child under 16, but was found guilty. A man who sexually assaulted a teenage girl by putting his hand up her skirt on a crowded Melbourne tram has been jailed.
Marshall Jordan, who was on his way to work as an immigration public servant when the sexual assault occurred, fought the single charge of performing an indecent act on a child under 16, but was found guilty.
The 31-year-old has been ordered to serve six months in prison and his name will be added to the sex offenders register for eight years.
Magistrate Jonathan Klestadt told Jordan he needed to protect the community from him.
"This conduct may have had the effect of increasing the level of fear in the community," he said.
In May last year Jordan was on a city-bound tram in Northcote when he fondled the legs of one girl in school uniform - an uncharged act - before putting his hand up the skirt of another girl, also in uniform, and touched her genital area.
The girl cried out, "How dare you, you bloody bastard," to which Jordan calmly replied he didn't do anything.
He then fled, changed his appearance and went to work.
The victim said in a statement read to the Melbourne Magistrates' Court the act had stripped all of her innocence.
“I lost the most important things when I was assaulted, my innocence and self-security,” she said.
"In places where I was once safe and secure I suddenly don't trust men,” she added.
"It makes me so angry that I lost these to a selfish person."
The victim’s father said today he is “relived” that Jordan is now in jail.
“My only relief is the fact that he’s now in jail, he will be in jail, he’s taken off the street. And the only reason that’s happened is because my daughter stood up to him,” he said.
Mr Klestadt said the victim of the indecent act is a strong, intelligent young woman and he hoped she continued counselling to overcome the burden Jordan's lewd conduct placed on her.

As of June 2011, the greater geographical area had a population of 4.17 million.[1] Inhabitants of Melbourne are called Melburnians.[3] The metropolis is located on the large natural bay known as Port Phillip, with the city centre positioned on the estuary of the Yarra River (at the northernmost point of the bay).[4] The metropolitan area then extends south from the city centre, along the eastern and western shorelines of Port Phillip, and expands into the hinterland. The city centre is situated in the municipality known as the City of Melbourne. The metropolitan area consists of a further 30 municipalities.[5]
Melbourne was founded in 1835 (47 years after the European settlement of Australia) by settlers from Launceston in Van Diemen's Land.[6] It was named by Governor of New South Wales Sir Richard Bourke in 1837, in honour of the British Prime Minister of the day, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne.[6] Melbourne was officially declared a city by Queen Victoria in 1847.[7] In 1851, it became the capital city of the newly created colony of Victoria.[7] During the Victorian gold rush of the 1850s, it was transformed into one of the world's largest and wealthiest cities.[8] After the federation of Australia in 1901, it served as the interim seat of government of the newly created nation of Australia until 1927.[9]

As of June 2011, the greater geographical area had a population of 4.17 million.[1] Inhabitants of Melbourne are called Melburnians.[3] The metropolis is located on the large natural bay known as Port Phillip, with the city centre positioned on the estuary of the Yarra River (at the northernmost point of the bay).[4] The metropolitan area then extends south from the city centre, along the eastern and western shorelines of Port Phillip, and expands into the hinterland. The city centre is situated in the municipality known as the City of Melbourne. The metropolitan area consists of a further 30 municipalities.[5]
Melbourne was founded in 1835 (47 years after the European settlement of Australia) by settlers from Launceston in Van Diemen's Land.[6] It was named by Governor of New South Wales Sir Richard Bourke in 1837, in honour of the British Prime Minister of the day, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne.[6] Melbourne was officially declared a city by Queen Victoria in 1847.[7] In 1851, it became the capital city of the newly created colony of Victoria.[7] During the Victorian gold rush of the 1850s, it was transformed into one of the world's largest and wealthiest cities.[8] After the federation of Australia in 1901, it served as the interim seat of government of the newly created nation of Australia until 1927.[9]
