Over 100,000 Chinese millionaires have moved to Vancouver, sparking everything from a reality show, to a property boom and unaffordable housing. Are Canada's millionaire migrants a blessing or a curse?
For the glamorous and beautiful second generation millionaires - or fuerdai, of Chinese descent - Vancouver is a home away from home. "Vancouver is caught changing from a Canadian to a Chinese town. For myself I'm caught in between Chinese and Canadian", says Chelsea Jiang, one of the young stars of hit reality show, "Ultra Rich Asian Girls". Their lavish spending and lives of luxury are transforming the landscape of Canada's coastal city. The "Chinese brought you great food and better economy, what's there to complain about?" asks Jiang, who benefited from Canada's immigrant investment program. It incentivised foreigners with at least 1.6 million Canadian Dollars to come to Canada. But despite their wealth and purchasing power, the program was cancelled, and is seen as responsible for making Vancouver the second least affordable city in the world. "Clearly the immigrant investor program has just been an abject failure, in terms of fostering economic growth and in terms of fostering business growth and jobs", says local journalist, Ian Young. "This isn't really an issue about race, this is an issue about wealth", he says.

Chinese American history is the history of Chinese Americans or the history of ethnic Chinese in the United States. Chinese immigration to the U.S. consisted of three major waves, with the first beginning in the 19th century. Chinese immigrants in the 19th century worked as laborers, particularly on the transcontinental railroad, such as the Central Pacific Railroad. They also worked as laborers in the mining industry, and suffered racial discrimination at every level of society. While industrial employers were eager to get this new and cheap labor, the ordinary white public was stirred to anger by the presence of this "yellow peril." Despite the provisions for equal treatment of Chinese immigrants in the 1868 Burlingame Treaty, political and labor organizations rallied against the immigration of what they regarded as a degraded race and "cheap Chinese labor." Newspapers condemned the policies of employers, and even church leaders denounced the entrance of these aliens into what was regarded as a land for whites only. So hostile was the opposition that in 1882 the United States Congress eventually passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, which prohibited immigration from China for the next ten years. This law was then extended by the Geary Act in 1892. The Chinese Exclusion Act was the only U.S. law ever to prevent immigration and naturalization on the basis of race. These laws not only prevented new immigration but also brought additional suffering as they prevented the reunion of the families of thousands of Chinese men already living in the U.S. (that is, men who had left China without their wives and children); anti-miscegenation laws in many states prohibited Chinese men from marrying white women.
In 1924 the law barred further entries of Chinese; those already in the United States had been ineligible for citizenship since the previous year. Also by 1924, all Asian immigrants (except people from the Philippines, which had been annexed by the United States in 1898) were utterly excluded by law, denied citizenship and naturalization, and prevented from marrying Caucasians or owning land.[3]
Only since the 1940s when the US and China became allies during World War II, did the situation for Chinese Americans begin to improve, as restrictions on entry into the country, naturalization and mixed marriage were being lessened. In 1943, Chinese immigration to the U.S. was once again permitted — by way of the Magnuson Act — thereby repealing 61 years of official racial discrimination against the Chinese. Large-scale Chinese immigration did not occur until 1965 when the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965[4] lifted national origin quotas.[5] After World War II, anti-Asian prejudice began to decrease, and Chinese immigrants, along with other Asians (such as Japanese, Koreans, Indians and Vietnamese), have adapted and advanced. Currently, the Chinese constitute the largest ethnic group of Asian Americans (about 22%), and have confounded earlier expectations that they would form an indigestible mass in American society.[citation needed] For example, many Chinese Americans of American birth may know little or nothing about traditional Chinese culture, just as European Americans and African Americans may know little or nothing about the original cultures of their ancestors.
As of the 2010 United States Census, there are more than 3.3 million Chinese in the United States — about 1% of the total population. The influx continues, where each year ethnic Chinese people from the People's Republic of China, Taiwan and to a lesser extent Southeast Asia move to the US, surpassing Hispanic and Latino immigration by 2012.

In API immigrant communities, where language and cultural barriers are persistent, religious institutions play an essential role in providing emotional and social support, social services, information, and connections to employment. Their multi-faceted role of being providers of services and arbiters of values places them in a unique position to challenge misinformation about HIV/AIDS, or alternatively to promote continued silence and stigmatization in API communities.
This presentation will explore Chinese immigrant religious institutions' response to HIV/AIDS and the potential for government and other nonprofit organizations to partner with them on HIV prevention, support and stigma-reduction activities. Religious institutions' HIV/AIDS engagement also acts as a lens for viewing community institutions' roles in preserving culture and managing cultural change in response to new realities in the receiving country. Being in an alien environment increases religious institutions' sense of urgency about preserving cultural norms and traditions while the day-to-day needs and realities of members encourage religious institutions to change in ways that allow them to be most responsive to those needs.
The presentation will draw on data collected to-date in our study of religious institutions in the Chinese immigrant community in New York City (NYC), funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH Grant Number R01HD054303). Data sources include a census of Chinese immigrant religious institutions in New York City, a survey of a sample of these institutions, and qualitative interviews with leaders of these institutions.

Chinese emigration
Waves of Chinese emigration (also known as the Chinese diaspora) have happened throughout history. The mass emigration known as the Chinese diaspora, which occurred from the 19th century to 1949, was mainly caused by wars and starvation in mainland China, invasion from various foreign countries, as well as the problems resulting from political corruption. Most immigrants were illiterate peasants and manual labourers, called "coolies" (Chinese: 苦力; pinyin: kǔ lì; literally: "Hard Labour") by analogy to the same pattern of immigration from India, who emigrated to work in countries such as the Americas, Australia, South Africa and Southeast Asia.
According to Lynn Pan's book Sons of the Yellow Emperor, the Chinese coolie emigration began after slavery was abolished throughout the British possessions. Facing a desperate shortage of manpower, European merchants looked to replace African slaves with indentured labourers from China and India. A British Guiana planter found what he was looking for in the Chinese labourers: "their strong physique, their eagerness to make money, their history of toil from infancy".

Speakers: John J. Chin, Elana Behar, Min Ying Li & Po Chun Chen In API immigrant communities, where language and cultural barriers are persistent, religious institutions play an essential role in providing emotional and social support, social services, information, and connections to employment. Their multi-faceted role of being providers of services and arbiters of values places them in a unique position to challenge misinformation about HIV/AIDS, or alternatively to promote continued silence and stigmatization in API communities. This presentation will explore Chinese immigrant religious institutions' response to HIV/AIDS and the potential for government and other nonprofit organizations to partner with them on HIV prevention, support and stigma-reduction activities. Religious institutions' HIV/AIDS engagement also acts as a lens for viewing community institutions' roles in preserving culture and managing cultural change in response to new realities in the receiving country. Being in an alien environment increases religious institutions' sense of urgency about preserving cultural norms and traditions while the day-to-day needs and realities of members encourage religious institutions to change in ways that allow them to be most responsive to those needs. The presentation will draw on data collected to-date in our study of religious institutions in the Chinese immigrant community in New York City (NYC), funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH Grant Number R01HD054303). Data sources include a census of Chinese immigrant religious institutions in New York City, a survey of a sample of these institutions, and qualitative interviews with leaders of these institutions.

Chinese American history is the history of Chinese Americans or the history of ethnic Chinese in the United States. Chinese immigration to the U.S. consisted of three major waves, with the first beginning in the 19th century. Chinese immigrants in the 19th century worked as laborers, particularly on the transcontinental railroad, such as the Central Pacific Railroad. Over 100,000 Chinese millionaires have moved to Vancouver, sparking everything from a reality show, to a property boom and unaffordable housing. Are Canada's millionaire migrants a blessing or a curse?
For the glamorous and beautiful second generation millionaires - or fuerdai, of Chinese descent - Vancouver is a home away from home. "Vancouver is caught changing from a Canadian to a Chinese town. For myself I'm caught in between Chinese and Canadian", says Chelsea Jiang, one of the young stars of hit reality show, "Ultra Rich Asian Girls". Their lavish spending and lives of luxury are transforming the landscape of Canada's coastal city. The "Chinese brought you great food and better economy, what's there to complain about?" asks Jiang, who benefited from Canada's immigrant investment program. It incentivised foreigners with at least 1.6 million Canadian Dollars to come to Canada. But despite their wealth and purchasing power, the program was cancelled, and is seen as responsible for making Vancouver the second least affordable city in the world. "Clearly the immigrant investor program has just been an abject failure, in terms of fostering economic growth and in terms of fostering business growth and jobs", says local journalist, Ian Young. "This isn't really an issue about race, this is an issue about wealth", he says.

Chinese American history is the history of Chinese Americans or the history of ethnic Chinese in the United States. Chinese immigration to the U.S. consisted of...
Chinese American history is the history of Chinese Americans or the history of ethnic Chinese in the United States. Chinese immigration to the U.S. consisted of three major waves, with the first beginning in the 19th century. Chinese immigrants in the 19th century worked as laborers, particularly on the transcontinental railroad, such as the Central Pacific Railroad. They also worked as laborers in the mining industry, and suffered racial discrimination at every level of society. While industrial employers were eager to get this new and cheap labor, the ordinary white public was stirred to anger by the presence of this "yellow peril." Despite the provisions for equal treatment of Chinese immigrants in the 1868 Burlingame Treaty, political and labor organizations rallied against the immigration of what they regarded as a degraded race and "cheap Chinese labor." Newspapers condemned the policies of employers, and even church leaders denounced the entrance of these aliens into what was regarded as a land for whites only. So hostile was the opposition that in 1882 the United States Congress eventually passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, which prohibited immigration from China for the next ten years. This law was then extended by the Geary Act in 1892. The Chinese Exclusion Act was the only U.S. law ever to prevent immigration and naturalization on the basis of race. These laws not only prevented new immigration but also brought additional suffering as they prevented the reunion of the families of thousands of Chinese men already living in the U.S. (that is, men who had left China without their wives and children); anti-miscegenation laws in many states prohibited Chinese men from marrying white women.
In 1924 the law barred further entries of Chinese; those already in the United States had been ineligible for citizenship since the previous year. Also by 1924, all Asian immigrants (except people from the Philippines, which had been annexed by the United States in 1898) were utterly excluded by law, denied citizenship and naturalization, and prevented from marrying Caucasians or owning land.[3]
Only since the 1940s when the US and China became allies during World War II, did the situation for Chinese Americans begin to improve, as restrictions on entry into the country, naturalization and mixed marriage were being lessened. In 1943, Chinese immigration to the U.S. was once again permitted — by way of the Magnuson Act — thereby repealing 61 years of official racial discrimination against the Chinese. Large-scale Chinese immigration did not occur until 1965 when the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965[4] lifted national origin quotas.[5] After World War II, anti-Asian prejudice began to decrease, and Chinese immigrants, along with other Asians (such as Japanese, Koreans, Indians and Vietnamese), have adapted and advanced. Currently, the Chinese constitute the largest ethnic group of Asian Americans (about 22%), and have confounded earlier expectations that they would form an indigestible mass in American society.[citation needed] For example, many Chinese Americans of American birth may know little or nothing about traditional Chinese culture, just as European Americans and African Americans may know little or nothing about the original cultures of their ancestors.
As of the 2010 United States Census, there are more than 3.3 million Chinese in the United States — about 1% of the total population. The influx continues, where each year ethnic Chinese people from the People's Republic of China, Taiwan and to a lesser extent Southeast Asia move to the US, surpassing Hispanic and Latino immigration by 2012.

In API immigrant communities, where language and cultural barriers are persistent, religious institutions play an essential role in providing emotional and social support, social services, information, and connections to employment. Their multi-faceted role of being providers of services and arbiters of values places them in a unique position to challenge misinformation about HIV/AIDS, or alternatively to promote continued silence and stigmatization in API communities.
This presentation will explore Chinese immigrant religious institutions' response to HIV/AIDS and the potential for government and other nonprofit organizations to partner with them on HIV prevention, support and stigma-reduction activities. Religious institutions' HIV/AIDS engagement also acts as a lens for viewing community institutions' roles in preserving culture and managing cultural change in response to new realities in the receiving country. Being in an alien environment increases religious institutions' sense of urgency about preserving cultural norms and traditions while the day-to-day needs and realities of members encourage religious institutions to change in ways that allow them to be most responsive to those needs.
The presentation will draw on data collected to-date in our study of religious institutions in the Chinese immigrant community in New York City (NYC), funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH Grant Number R01HD054303). Data sources include a census of Chinese immigrant religious institutions in New York City, a survey of a sample of these institutions, and qualitative interviews with leaders of these institutions.
