The original Muscle Beach, located south of the Santa Monica Pier, was constructed in 1934 by the Works Progress Administration with the intention of creating a park on a public beach. By the 1940s however, Muscle Beach frequently appeared as a standing joke in trade magazines and was often mentioned with innuendo in Hollywood gossip columns. For filmmaker Joseph Strick, however, the beach scene offered an opportunity to observe and document an emerging subculture of gymnasts, bodybuilders and exhibitionists. His 1948 short Muscle Beach, made with assistance from fellow filmmaker Irving Lerner, can be considered a carefree and wholesome portrait of a site that was then of questionable reputation. The film would be the first of Strick’s early efforts to highlight documentary footage of Los Angeles counterculture.
An aerial photographer during World War II, Strick used an army surplus movie camera to shoot the film during weekends in the fall of 1948 while working as a copy boy at the “Los Angeles Times.” The songs in “Muscle Beach,” composed and sung by political folk singer Earl Robinson, with lyrics by screenwriter and poet Edwin Rolfe, accent the film’s three-movement structure as it transitions between soaring gymnastics shows, flirty beachgoers and children playing near the now-demolished pier at Ocean Park.
Muscle Beach was shown in competition at Cannes in 1949 and won a prize at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 1951. The short became a cult favorite, screening at film clubs around the world. By 1954, fitness culture was in full swing in the U.S., with films such as Athena featuring Hollywood stars in a health-conscious comedy. In 1959, the original Santa Monica Muscle Beach was closed, and fitness enthusiasts gravitated to a similar area in Venice Beach, which was renamed Muscle Beach Venice in 1987. The original Muscle Beach was refurbished by the city of Santa Monica in 1999, and both areas continue to attract bodybuilders, gymnasts, fitness buffs and their admirers today.
Joseph Strick’s body of work includes narrative, avant-garde and documentary films, and the blurring of these genres. His second feature, “The Savage Eye” (1960), which he wrote and directed with Ben Maddow and Sidney Meyers, won BAFTA’s Flaherty Documentary Award. Strick shared an Oscar nomination with Fred Haines for their adapted screenplay for Ulysses (1967), and would later receive an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short for Interviews with My Lai Veterans (1971). In 2001, the Academy Film Archive became the home of the Joseph Strick Collection, which holds over 100 items of negative and print material, as well as video tape elements. The Academy Film Archive restored Muscle Beach and The Savage Eye in 2008, and Strick’s controversial drama The Balcony in 2011.

I discovered this book via a footnote in A Clockwork Orange which comments on the preacher's rap to Alex but notes it was nothing so severe as what is in "A Portrait"... and man is it true, especially in the book, but in this film Gielgud does a fine job of performing a small part of whole bit from the book.

Joseph Strick
Joseph Strick (July 6, 1923 – June 2, 2010) was an American director, producer and screenwriter.
Life and career
Born in the Pittsburgh area town of Braddock, Pennsylvania, Strick briefly attended UCLA before enrolling in the Army during World War II. In the Army, he served as a cameraman in the Army Air Forces.
In 1948, he and Irving Lerner produced Muscle Beach. For several years in the 1950s, Lerner, Strick, Ben Maddow, and Sidney Meyers worked part-time on the experimental documentary The Savage Eye (1959).
Strick was also a successful businessman, founding Electrosolids Corp (1956), Computron Corp. (1958), Physical Sciences Corp (1958), and Holosonics Corp. (1960) In 1977 he invented the usage of six-axis motion simulators as entertainment systems and applied it to new machines used now in Disney theme parks as "Star Tours."
In the 1960s, during his first marriage, Strick commissioned what would be the only house designed by Oscar Niemeyer in North America. The marriage ended in divorce before construction was completed, though, and Strick never occupied the house, located on the edge of Santa Monica Canyon.

James Joyce
James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (2 February 1882 – 13 January 1941) was an Irish novelist and poet. He contributed to the modernist avant-garde, and is regarded as one of the most influential and important authors of the twentieth century.
Joyce is best known for Ulysses (1922), a landmark work in which the episodes of Homer's Odyssey are paralleled in an array of contrasting literary styles, perhaps most prominent among these the stream of consciousness technique he utilized. Other well-known works are the short-story collection Dubliners (1914), and the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Finnegans Wake (1939). His other writings include three books of poetry, a play, occasional journalism, and his published letters.
Joyce was born in 41 Brighton Square, Rathgar, Dublin—about half a mile from his mother's birthplace in Terenure—into a middle-class family on the way down. A brilliant student, he excelled at the Jesuit schools Clongowes and Belvedere, despite the chaotic family life imposed by his father's alcoholism and unpredictable finances. He went on to attend University College Dublin.

The original Muscle Beach, located south of the Santa Monica Pier, was constructed in 1934 by the Works Progress Administration with the intention of creating a park on a public beach. By the 1940s however, Muscle Beach frequently appeared as a standing joke in trade magazines and was often mentioned with innuendo in Hollywood gossip columns. For filmmaker Joseph Strick, however, the beach scene offered an opportunity to observe and document an emerging subculture of gymnasts, bodybuilders and exhibitionists. His 1948 short Muscle Beach, made with assistance from fellow filmmaker Irving Lerner, can be considered a carefree and wholesome portrait of a site that was then of questionable reputation. The film would be the first of Strick’s early efforts to highlight documentary footage of Los Angeles counterculture.
An aerial photographer during World War II, Strick used an army surplus movie camera to shoot the film during weekends in the fall of 1948 while working as a copy boy at the “Los Angeles Times.” The songs in “Muscle Beach,” composed and sung by political folk singer Earl Robinson, with lyrics by screenwriter and poet Edwin Rolfe, accent the film’s three-movement structure as it transitions between soaring gymnastics shows, flirty beachgoers and children playing near the now-demolished pier at Ocean Park.

"Misurarsi con un capolavoro della letteratura è sempre una fatica improba. Figurarsi quando si tratta di un romanzo sui generis come l’Ulisse di Joyce, nel quale la trama, per così dire, è costituita dal girovagare di alcuni personaggi attraverso Dublino in un giorno normalissimo d’inizio Novecento ed alla narrazione dei fatti è spesso intercalato il monologo interiore dei personaggi. È immaginabile che quando un regista si accinge a realizzare un film da un’opera simile sia ben consapevole delle difficoltà che va ad affrontare, tanto è vero che autori più prestigiosi dell’americano Strick (tra questi, pare, anche Ejzenstejn) avevano rinunciato a trasporre in film il romanzo di Joyce. E questo sebbene sia stato detto più volte che il linguaggio dell’Ulisse fosse più simile al cinema che alla narrativa tradizionalmente intesa. In ogni caso, a guardare il film tenendo presente il libro, ci si rende conto che, nonostante le grandi linee esposte da Joyce siano presenti, qualche episodio importante è stato inevitabilmente sforbiciato. Del resto, si tratta di un romanzo-poema di più di mille pagine, fittissimo di personaggi, luoghi, fatti e riferimenti, per il quale non basterebbe uno sceneggiato televisivo di vecchio stampo. Nello sceneggiare (insieme a Fred Haines) e nel mettere in scena simile materia, Joseph Strick (classe 1923) ha fatto, a mio parere, un lavoro più che dignitoso. L’ambientazione dublinese è indubbiamente posta ai giorni nostri (ovviamente del 1967), ma la dimensione temporale non è molto caratterizzata ed è, anzi, abbastanza irrilevante. Il bianco e nero di Wolfgang Suschitzkyrende bene l’atmosfera brumosa e “paralitica” della Dublino joyciana. Milo O’Shea è un plausibilissimo Leopold Bloom e Barbara Jefford una Molly forse più che definitiva. Per chi non ha letto il libro non sarà facilissimo digerire certi passaggi del film (il processo a Bloom, che poi viene addirittura incoronato imperatore, una delle invenzioni più geniali dello scrittore irlandese), così come essi non furono digeriti a Cannes 1967, ma, secondo me, il film vale assolutamente la pena di essere visto."

È immaginabile che quando un regista si accinge a realizzare un film da un’opera simile sia ben consapevole delle difficoltà che va ad affrontare, tanto è vero che autori più prestigiosi dell’americano Strick (tra questi, pare, anche Ejzenstejn) avevano rinunciato a trasporre in film il romanzo di Joyce. E questo sebbene sia stato detto più volte che il linguaggio dell’Ulisse fosse più simile al cinema che alla narrativa tradizionalmente intesa. In ogni caso, a guardare il film tenendo presente il libro, ci si rende conto che, nonostante le grandi linee esposte da Joyce siano presenti, qualche episodio importante è stato inevitabilmente sforbiciato. Del resto, si tratta di un romanzo-poema di più di mille pagine, fittissimo di personaggi, luoghi, fatti e riferimenti, per il quale non basterebbe uno sceneggiato televisivo di vecchio stampo. Nello sceneggiare (insieme a Fred Haines) e nel mettere in scena simile materia, Joseph Strick (classe 1923) ha fatto, a mio parere, un lavoro più che dignitoso. L’ambientazione dublinese è indubbiamente posta ai giorni nostri (ovviamente del 1967), ma la dimensione temporale non è molto caratterizzata ed è, anzi, abbastanza irrilevante. Il bianco e nero di Wolfgang Suschitzkyrende bene l’atmosfera brumosa e “paralitica” della Dublino joyciana. Milo O’Shea è un plausibilissimo Leopold Bloom e Barbara Jefford una Molly forse più che definitiva. Per chi non ha letto il libro non sarà facilissimo digerire certi passaggi del film (il processo a Bloom, che poi viene addirittura incoronato imperatore, una delle invenzioni più geniali dello scrittore irlandese), così come essi non furono digeriti a Cannes 1967, ma, secondo me, il film vale assolutamente la pena di essere visto."

"I was 13 years of age when I appeared with the Jack Hylton Band in RadiOlympia, a programme that went out on television all those years ago. What I remember most is the heavy ochre make-up the performers had to wear. I was excused the make-up for some reason; maybe mine was such a long shot that it was not deemed necessary. If you blink you miss me! However, June Malo, the Henderson Twins, Peggy Dell, Bruce Trent and Freddie Schweitzer had this heavy ochre make-up plastered on them. Plastered is the only word! Having toured with them for over 12-months and used to seeing them in stage make-up they looked very strange. Mr Hylton was excused also. He was always Mr Hylton to me. He called me "Morine", (the American pronunciation, and was a kind man who made such a difference to my career. He always wore those two-tone shoes that were so popular at the time. It is wonderful to see him so trim and dapper in the tape, which Simon Vaughan has sent me."[4][5]

While still a teenager, she toured abroad before World War II as a singer and dancer with Jack Haylton (known as Jack Hylton) and his orchestra. On a tour of Germany, they once performed in front of Adolf Hitler and other Nazis.[2] She played the role of Dante Riordan in Joseph Strick's film, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1977).
In September 1938, Potter appeared on the BBC Television Service with Jack Hylton and his Band. Film of her performance is held by the Alexandra Palace Television Society.[3] In 2001, the Archivist of the Alexandra Palace Television Society gave Potter a copy of her 1938 television appearance and she recalled her memories:
"I was 13 years of age when I appeared with the Jack Hylton Band in RadiOlympia, a programme that went out on television all those years ago. What I remember most is the heavy ochre make-up the performers had to wear. I was excused the make-up for some reason; maybe mine was such a long shot that it was not deemed necessary. If you blink you miss me! However, June Malo, the Henderson Twins, Peggy Dell, Bruce Trent and Freddie Schweitzer had this heavy ochre make-up plastered on them. Plastered is the only word! Having toured with them for over 12-months and used to seeing them in stage make-up they looked very strange. Mr Hylton was excused also. He was always Mr Hylton to me. He called me "Morine", (the American pronunciation, and was a kind man who made such a difference to my career. He always wore those two-tone shoes that were so popular at the time. It is wonderful to see him so trim and dapper in the tape, which Simon Vaughan has sent me."[4][5]

Potter first appeared professionally with Jimmy O'Dea in pantomime and appeared frequently on television and in cabaret. She was conferred with the Freedom of the City of Dublin in 1984, and was later awarded an honorary degree from Trinity College, Dublin. She died in Clontarf on 7 April 2004, at the age of 79. She was survived by her husband, Jack O'Leary, and her sons, John and Hugh.
