The Appalachian National Scenic Trail, generally known as the Appalachian Trail or simply the A.T., is a marked hiking trail in the eastern United States extending between Springer Mountain in Georgia and Mount Katahdin in Maine. The trail is approximately 2,200 miles (3,500 km) long, though the precise length changes over time as parts are modified or rerouted. The trail passes through the states of Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. The path is maintained by 31 trail clubs and multiple partnerships, and managed by the National Park Service, United States Forest Service, and the nonprofit Appalachian Trail Conservancy. The majority of the trail is in forest or wild lands, although some portions traverse towns, roads and farms. The trail conservancy claims that the Appalachian Trail is the longest hiking-only trail in the world.
The Appalachian Trail is famous for its many hikers, some of whom, called thru-hikers, attempt to hike it in its entirety in a single season. Others have managed to perform a "round-trip" of the trail where they thru-hike from one end to the other and then turn around to thru-hike the trail the other way, otherwise known as a "yo-yo". Many books, memoirs, web sites and fan organizations are dedicated to these pursuits.

For more than half of the U.S. population, the Appalachian Trail is less than a day's drive away. Yet despite its proximity to many major cities, few truly know the splendor of this national treasure. National Geographic travels off the beaten track to discover the remote and often unknown corners of the 5-million-step journey

A look at the first 78.5 miles of the Appalachian Trail seen through my eyes. Most footage is unseen. Georgia was a difficult section and provided a glimpse into the difficulty associated with hiking this trail. Enjoy. If anyone has any questions regarding the Georgia section let me know. Red Beard

Since I have been asked several times for what the amount of drug use is like on the trail, I thought it'd be helpful to make this video of my experience as someone who wasn't using alcohol or other drugs on the trail. In the end, people will most likely be polite to you regardless of whether you want to smoke up or go out to a bar with them; this should not be a determining factor in your enjoyment of your hike. My most critical advice is STEALTH CAMP! Music credit: Friday Morning, Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com). Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

The next day we summit Moose Mountain's north peak, Smarts Mountain and Mount Cube before ending up at Brackett Brook.
In 2015 Steve and Karl Berger embarked on a journey along the Appalachian Trail. As father and son they hiked from Georgia to Maine, learning as much about the trail's unique culture as they did about themselves. "Walking Home" is not just a story about father and son, but a story about community and finding freedom and love in five million steps. Come along on the journey! This is the the first part of a two part series. A film by Ryan Leighton https://boomplop.com
