American Airlines passengers evacuated after flight bursts into flames in Chicago

A PASSENGER has filmed the moment passengers were evacuated from an American Airlines flight after it burst into flames at a Chicago airport.

Hector Gustavo Cardenas was on board American Airlines Flight 383 from Chicago to Miami when it caught fire and was evacuated on the runway at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on Friday afternoon (local time).

The footage (WATCH ABOVE) shows stunned passengers frantically making their way out of the plane and shouting “Go, go, go”. Others can be heard saying, “Oh my God”.

Meanwhile, at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport, a FedEx cargo plane also caught fire after its landing gear collapsed shortly after landing, according to NBC Miami.

Fort Lauderdale airport spokesman Kerry Sanders said FedEx 910 was rolling on the runway when one of the plane’s landing gears collapsed and it’s left wing caught fire.

FedEx officials said their pilots are safe after the incident.

The plane had just arrived from Memphis.

Video footage from witnesses posted on social media showed an explosion followed by smoke billowing from the plane, which appeared to be tilted on its side.

FedEx Plane Bursts Into Flames at Ft. Lauderdale Airport

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Tony Molinaro said the pilot of the American Airlines flight aborted the takeoff and everyone evacuated after the plane blew a tyre and damaged an engine.

Evacuation chutes extended from the plane.

He said there were no injuries but television station WGN reported that several people were injured.

Television reports showed a large plume of black smoke coming from the Boeing 767, which appeared to be damaged at the rear.

The Chicago Fire Department tweeted it responded to the scene.

The fire department also said there was an extra-alarm emergency response at the airport for an “aircraft down.”

Large Billows of Smoke Seen Over O'Hare International Airport

American Airlines spokeswoman Leslie Scott said in a brief statement that the plane had “an engine-related mechanical issue.”

She said buses were sent to take 161 passengers and nine crew members from the runway to the terminal.

The FAA is investigating the incident.
