Data (/ˈdeɪtə/ DAY-tə, /ˈdætə/ DA-tə, or /ˈdɑːtə/ DAH-tə) is a set of values of qualitative or quantitative variables; restated, pieces of data are individual pieces of information. Data is measured, collected and reported, and analyzed, whereupon it can be visualized using graphs or images. Data as a general concept refers to the fact that some existing information or knowledge is represented or coded in some form suitable for better usage or processing.
Raw data, i.e. unprocessed data, is a collection of numbers, characters; data processing commonly occurs by stages, and the "processed data" from one stage may be considered the "raw data" of the next. Field data is raw data that is collected in an uncontrolled in situ environment. Experimental data is data that is generated within the context of a scientific investigation by observation and recording.
The Latin word "data" is the plural of "datum", and still may be used as a plural noun in this sense. Nowadays, though, "data" is most commonly used in the singular, as a mass noun (like "information", "sand" or "rain").

Light
Light is electromagnetic radiation within a certain portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. The word usually refers to visible light, which is visible to the human eye and is responsible for the sense of sight. Visible light is usually defined as having wavelengths in the range of 400–700 nanometres (nm), or 4.00 × 10−7 to 7.00 × 10−7 m, between the infrared (with longer wavelengths) and the ultraviolet (with shorter wavelengths). This wavelength means a frequency range of roughly 430–750 terahertz (THz).
The main source of light on Earth is the Sun. Sunlight provides the energy that green plants use to create sugars mostly in the form of starches, which release energy into the living things that digest them. This process of photosynthesis provides virtually all the energy used by living things. Historically, another important source of light for humans has been fire, from ancient campfires to modern kerosene lamps. With the development of electric lights and power systems, electric lighting has effectively replaced firelight. Some species of animals generate their own light, a process called bioluminescence. For example, fireflies use light to locate mates, and vampire squids use it to hide themselves from prey.

For example, fiber-optic cables have enabled the transmission of information over phone lines and across the internet. In the first session of Distinguished Speakers, chaired by Erich Strohmaier, at ISC 2016 in Frankfurt, Germany, Haohuan Fu from the National Supercomputer Center at Wuxi in China, introduced the new nr. 1 machine in the TOP500 list: the Sunway TaihuLight. Haohuan Fu started by explaining the name of the new system. It is named after Lake Taihu. Lake Taihu is a lake with intense light in the eastern part of China, very close to the city of Shanghai. This is one of the most populated areas in China with a number of major cities with a lot of industries. The National Supercomputer Center at Wuxi is situated nearby the lake. The balls of light which appear in the Hessdalen valley in Norway are exemplary of anomalous atmospheric luminous phenomena that occur frequently at some locations on Earth. The apparent correlation of luminous phenomena with magnetic perturbations, radio emission, and radar tracks, found by Norwegian researchers, led some physicists and engineers to reanalyze the Norwegian data. Alexander Duyck - Data Plane Acceleration - Receiving Packets at the Speed of Light
As network speeds continue to increase from 10Gb/s, to 40Gb/s, and very soon to 100Gb/s the rate at which packets can arrive increases, and as a result the amount of time to process packets decreases to as little as 6.7ns per packet at 100Gb/s. When something as simple as a memory barrier can cause stalls of 7ns or more strategies must be devised to mitigate such issues so that we can process as many packets per core as possible. This talk will go over some of the mitigation strategies being employed to reduce these costs and bring the kernel networking stack down to receive processing times sufficient to allow for wire rate networking at minimal packet sizes.

His first major paper was published by Flinders University in 1987, co-authored by Trevor Norman, and written at the request of a senior physicist at Stanford Research Institute International.
Research has continued in the fields of physics, geology, and astronomy, with papers published in the Journal of Theoretics. He and his wife are currently living in southern Oregon, where he is Director of the New Hope Observatory.

Light is typically thought of as a medium for illumination, either natural, as in the sun, or man-made, as in a light bulb. However, light can also be a medium for transporting and manipulating information. For example, fiber-optic cables have enabled the transmission of information over phone lines and across the internet. This talk will focus on new, emerging technology that uses light to diagnose diseases or to carry information at ultrafast speeds between integrated circuits. This technology, which is being investigated at Vanderbilt, has the potential to lead to sensors capable of simultaneous detection of small quantities of different chemical and biological molecules for early disease detection and new types of computer architectures that operate with light waves in addition to or instead of electricity to enable faster and broader bandwidth computations.
Sharon M. Weiss is an associate professor of electrical engineering in Vanderbilt University's School of Engineering. Her research is primarily focused on the interaction of light with various nanostructured materials. She has more than 80 publications, one patent issued and five patents pending. Abstract:
ESnet is a nationwide network that provides high-bandwidth, reliable connectivity linking tens of thousands of scientists at more than 40 DOE labs and facilities with collaborators worldwide. ESnet has begun working with scientists at the Advanced Light Source at Berkeley Lab who are seeing massive increases in the data output of their experiments and who now require HPC and network resources to support their research.
This talk details ESnet's work with an ALS scientist whose beamline instrument upgrade led to the production of data at a rate of 300 megabytes per second - 50 times faster than the previous instrument. Keeping up with this torrent of data required new methods for moving, storing, and analyzing data. ESnet staff worked with the beamline scientist to deploy new infrastructure based on the 'Science DMZ' architecture where data-intensive science applications are run on dedicated infrastructure specifically configured for high performance.
Leveraging Globus Online as the data primary data transfer tool on the Science DMZ, the beamline scientist now seamlessly transmits data to DOE's National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) in Oakland, where the data is stored, managed and shared with other researchers.

The balls of light which appear in the Hessdalen valley in Norway are exemplary of anomalous atmospheric luminous phenomena that occur frequently at some locations on Earth. The apparent correlation of luminous phenomena with magnetic perturbations, radio emission, and radar tracks, found by Norwegian researchers, led some physicists and engineers to reanalyze the Norwegian data.
The lights themselves appeared to have several different shapes. This was something that became quite apparent when the lights were photographed. The main shapes were; bullet shaped, with the sharp end down, a round football shape, and an upside down Christmas tree shape. There were other shapes but the above three were the main ones.
The colors of the lights were mostly white or a yellow/white. Sometimes a small red light could be seen amongst the white. On a few occasions the lights were made up of every colour in the rainbow. The lights could be observed several times a day, but they were seen more during the night. At the most they were observed four times a day. There were more reports of the lights in the winter rather than the summer. One reason for this might be the fact that in summer Hessdalen has almost perpetual daylight.

When something as simple as a memory barrier can cause stalls of 7ns or more strategies must be devised to mitigate such issues so that we can process as many packets per core as possible. This talk will go over some of the mitigation strategies being employed to reduce these costs and bring the kernel networking stack down to receive processing times sufficient to allow for wire rate networking at minimal packet sizes.
